5 Claims.
An object of the present-'invention is to provide and drive a fastener having the characteristics of a brad. In theform of the-invention here disclosed, a pair of these fasteners are cut from a standard U-shape staple and driven simultaneously. The invention resides in the-variousparts adapted for carrying outvthe invention, as will more clearly appearl they accompanying drawing and description, and the essential features of the invention vwill be set forth in the claims.
In the drawing, Fig; :1 is -a side elevational View of a stapling machine embodying -my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmental view of the lower right-handportion of Fig. l, the gate being in a lowered position; 3 is a fragmental front elevationalA view. of the lower right-hand portion of Fig. 1 taken in approximately the position indicated at 3-`-3, Fig. l; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 with certain parts broken away and in section so as to morevclearly -showthe construction; Fig. 4a isV a viewv similar to Fig. 4 and showing two brad-like fastening elements as cut from a standardstaple and simultaneously driven into a piece of molding for the securement thereof to a screen frame; Fig. 5 is abottom view of .the structure shown in 3; Fig. 6 is a plan view illustrating the; screen frame and molding of Fig. 4a, the screen'moldin'g beingr secured by the usepf the Apresentifastening elements; l.and Fig. 'Vis a 'vertical sectional view on the line 1-1 of Fig. 6.
The staple machine here illustrated for the disclosure of the present invention is similar in many respects to the machine shown in United States Patent No. 1,996,640, granted April 2, 1935 to Francis M. Case. Therefore only a brief description will be given of the parts similar in the two machines.
The upper part of the machine comprises a hollow casing I formed of a main frame and a cover frame and providing a hand grip at II and a vertically extending square housing at I2 in which reciprocates a plunger I3 having a rubber cap I4 adapted to be struck in effecting downward movement of the plunger. A spring, not shown, normally biases the plunger I3 to its uppermost position. The base of the machine comprises a staple guide bar I of generally inverted T-form shape upon which slide the U-shape staples I6 which are usually connected as a group by suitable adhesive which vpermits --thestaplea the staples so as to feed them to -thedriving position beneath a driving blade carried by the plunger I3. This follower is pulled forwardly lby a spring enclosed in the housing I0 andfhaving one of its ends Aattached tothe follower att-I8. When loading the machine with staples, the' follower is latched in its rearmost position'and'aiiat spring I9 is provided to =hold the follower in latched position. Atl the Vforwardv end of the guide bar an inverted'fU -shape frontk guide :20 is secured to the bar by pins or rivets 2|. The inner face of this guide 20, as bes-tseen in Fig. 4, is spaced from the end of bar I5, as indicated at 22; for the passage of thestaples to'a posi-tion beneath the plunger driving blade. A front 'gate 23 is pivotally-mounted--on a pin-24^ina slot :20a in the guide 25, this -slot permitting A'the gate to be dro-pped to the position shown in Fig. 2 for the purpose of sliding a group of staples onto 4the bar I5 from the ,front end thereof. After such a loading of the machine with staples,v the gate is swung upwardly yto the position shown. in the other views, where it rests fon twoside ali-ps '20h of the ,guide 20 and :is 'held "by the `gate latch 25 which is reciprocably mounted in the benteover guide portions Illa of the; housing I0.. A .tongue 23a struck up from the front vwallof Lthegate 23 provides a stop Which'l-imits the ,downward movement of the gate 'latch 25. Thus the gate prevents the staples I6 from being moved forwardly out of the machine] under theQaction-.of Ithe spring-pressed follower t1.' Ali .of the :abnVS- .Cilescribed parts are like those shown in the above mentioned Case patent, to which further reference may be had if desired.
In carrying out the present invention, in the stapling machine here illustrated, an anvil 26, here shown as of inverted T-shape cross section, is rigidly mounted, by means of the pins 2 I, in a slot in the forward end of the staple supporting bar I5, and projecting forwardly from such bar y is an anvil lip 26a of generally rectangular cross section.
Suitably secured to the plunger I3 for movement therewith, and lying along the front face thereof, is a driving blade 21. As shown in Figs. 4 and 4a, the lower end of this plunger blade is centrally notched or recessed, as at 28, for cooperation with the anvil lip 26a in shearing from each staple, during the driving thereof, the middle portion ISa of the staple crown, and in simultaneously driving into the Work the spaced staple n portions 21a of the plunger blade 2l.
legs and the short crown end portions at the tops thereof. To that end, the side edge portions 21a of the lower end of the plunger blade are so spaced by the plunger blade notch or recess 2*'8 as to more or less snugly receive therebetween, as the plunger blade is depressed, the anvil lip 26a. VThus, during the driving of each staple, downward movement of the middle portion l6a of the staple crown is arrested by the anvil lip 26a, with thepcnsequent removal of such staple crown portion, by shearing, as downward movement of the plunger blade 21 continues. Before such shearing of the middle portion of the staple` crown occurs, the staple legs I6 are started in't'o the work, and as the downward movement .of Vthe plunger blade continues, the two staple legs, each with a short end portion i6 of the staple crown at the-top thereof, are completely driven into the work by the correspondingly spaced side edge During such shearing and driving operation, the plunger bladen recess. ,2 8 receives the anvil lip 26a and the severed middle portion [6av ofJ the staple crown, -as will be evidentfrom FigAa.
Therefore, during each ldriving operation, two separate brad-like fastening elements are simultaneouvsly formed from each staple and simul- Ataneously driven into thehworls, the headed portions` lffof said fastening elements being imbedded in the worlgflush with vthe top surface .thereof, ,if, desired, For purposes of illustration,
these. brad-like` fasteningelerrnents are here shown (see Figs. da, `@and A'1) for the securement -of amoldingstrip 28atoa screen frame 30, with the screen' 42,9 interposedV therebetween.V Pairs of vthesegfastening*elementsmay be easily and rapidly. driveng into Hthe V work, lwith the Vfastening beingeectedrina neat and attractive manner. .For .theoutwardpassage V,from the stapling V,machine of the severed middle portions `I liaY of the staple crowns, a suitable opening h is provided Yin the front wall of the pivoted gate 23, as best Vshown in Fig. 3. r,greater width than the anvilmlip 2da and hence of somewhat :greater width, than the severed, staple. crown portions, the width of the anvil lip Jdet'ermining, o,f,cour se the length of the staple C crown portions which: arev severed by shearing. Usually, the 1 severed. stapleV crown portions Y automaticallyleave the stapling machine through the gate* opening 23h, so lthatgno attention thereto --n'eed be` given iny uselof the present stapling ma- This opening is 1of somewhat chine. Y Y,
-To those skilled inthe arttowhlch the present inventionrelates,.-"other features and advantages thereof will be evident from the foregoing description of one embodiment of such invention.
What I claim is:
1. In a stapling machine, means for holding a staple, said staple having a top portion and two depending leg portions, means for driving said leg portions, and means underlying and engaging at least a part of said top portion and coacting with said driving means for shearing away at least a partofsaid top portion by operation of said driving means. v f i Q l 2.
