Application filed September 2 ,My invention relates to stapling machines, and more particularly to that class of ma-` chine in which a strip of connected staples is fed automatically to a point of cutting, at
I which point the staples are individually severed from the strip and driven by means of a plunger. In machines of 'this class it is the practice to provide a vertical channel for guiding the individual staple as it is severed from the strip down to the point where the staple enters the wood, paper or other material into or through which 'it is driven. The channel is defined by walls which control the movement of the severed staple and one wall of this channel also serves to limit the forward movement of the staple strip as it is fed forward at each operation to bring the end of the' strip into position-for the cutting operation. In some cases, through defective o eration of the machine, or because of some efect in the staple., the' severed staple becomes clogged in the guiding channel and this interferes with the operation of the machine. The object of my present invention is to provide simple and inexpensive means for removing a member which forms part ofthe guiding channel, in order to permit accessto the staple which may have become clogged in the machine. ao Preferably, this removable member forms the forward member of the channel guide and it is so constructed that when in operative position it will effectively guide the severed staple as well as the lower end `of 85 the driving plunger. This member is adapted to be quickly released to provide access to the' clogged st'aple, and in the preferred form of m invention the guiding member may be re eased without the use of tools. 4

drawing I have shown only such partsof the complete machine as may be necessary to an understanding of the present invention. I .have shown a base 1 having an anvil 2 formed at one end, against which the staples are adapted to be driven and clenched; and at the opposite end .of the base there are upstandlng'ears 3 to which the Cutter bar of the machine is pivoted by means of the pin 4. The cutter bar 5 along which the strip of staples is guided is of the usual construction and 1 s mounted upon the pivots pin 4. The' housing or casing 6' encloses most of the mechanism of the machine and it forms a guide for the plunger 7 whichis Vertically movable` in the forward end of the casin There is a knob 8 on the upper end ofthis plunger which is adapted to be struck, by the hand in order to drive the plunger downwardly to sever and clench the staples'; and the return operation of the plunger is effected by the coiled spring 9 acting between the top of the frame and the knob. The strip of staples 10 ofwell known form and 'of U shape in cross section, is fed along the top of the cutter bar -5 so that the back of the strip rests'on top of the Cutter bar, and the prongs of the staples project downwardly on each side thereof, as shown in Figure 2. The staple strip is fed forwardly the width of one staple at each operation of the plunger by means of the feed pawl 11 which is pivoted at 12 upon the cam plate 13 which itself pivots upon the pin 14. This plate has a cam portion 15 which is acted upon by the .plunger to oscillate the plate 13 for the purpose of operating the feed pawl, The
forward end of the detent 16 is also' indicated in the drawing, this member serving to prevent the retraction of the staple strip while the feed pawl is moving back to engage behind a pair of prongs ready for the feeding. operation. All of the above arts are of well known construction an are usually incorporated in the various stapling machines now on the market.
When the staple strip is moved forwardly into position for the severing operation the forward end of the strip overhangs the cutter bar to an extent corresponding with the width of a single staple and the vertical guiding channel is in alignment with this portion of the staple which overhangs the cutter bar. Tn the construction shown in the drawing this channel is partly defined by the members 17, 18 of the frame or housing which constitute the side walls of the channel. The rear wall of this channel is composed of the cutter bar 5 and partly by the V side rails 19 which separate the cutter bar 22 extending bet-ween the two side walls.
This connecting wall is preferably formed to provide the inwardly extending portions 23 at each side, arranged at right angles to the side walls 20, 21 and from there the 'metal extends outwardly at right angles to form the walls 24 and a connecting wall 25. This construction provides an offsetpocket in which "the vertical rib 26 of the plunger is adapted to travel, and in which it is adapted tobe guided. One of the side walls 20 of the member 19 is provided with a slot 27 to receive the projecting end of the pin 28 which projects from one side 17 of the casing. The other side wall 21 of this member is also provided with a slot 29 to receive a shank of the headed pin 30 which projects from the opposite side wall 18 of the casing. There is a lever pivoted at 31 to the side wall 21 and it is provided with a finger piece 32 at one end, and adjacent its pivotal point it is provided with a hook 33 to engage over the shank: of the pin 30.
To apply the movable guide member to p the casing the lever 34 is raised, as shown in Figure 4, and the member 19 is slipped over the forward ends of the casing members 17, 18 so that the pins 28, 30 are received within the Slots 27, 29. The lever 34 is then swung down until the hook 33 engages over the pin 30 whereupon the movable guidememin the guide-way. v

While the severed staple is moving downwardly, it is guided on the forward side by means of the member 19 and more particularly by'the portions 23 and on other sides the staple is guided by the frame mem: bers 17, 18 and the cutter bar, so that it is maintained in a Vertical position while it is !being driven. `When the plunger moves downwardly the projecting rib 26 thereof is guided in the pocket 35 formed by the ofiset portionof the member 19, the same as if this member constituted a 'rigid portion of the frame proper. The pins 28, 30, together with the hook 33 retain the member 19 rigidly in place against the end of the frame, so that this member serves the same function as if it were formed as an integral part of the frame. lif the staple 'should become clogged in the raceway, or jammed, then the member 19 may 'be detaohed in order to open the lower end of the raceway and either permit the clogged staple to fall out or to permit the operator to dislodge it. To remove the member 19 the lever 34 is raised to release the hook 33 from the pin 30 whereupon the member'19 may be moved to the left in Figure 2 until the portions 20, 21 disengage from the pins 28, 30. It will be apparent that this movable member forming part of the raceway, permits ready access at all times to a clogged staple.
Having described my invention, what T claim is:
1. In a stapling machine'in which a preformed strip of staples is fed forwardly, the combination'with a frame, a cutter bar for guiding the strip of staples to the cutting position, said frame and cutter bar beingfixed in relation to each other, a plunger for severing and driving the end staple of the strip and movable at right angles to the cutter bar, a raceway for guiding the severed staple formed partly by said frame, and a front member, and means for holding said front member on said frame, including pins on the frame adapted to be received ir. Slots in said front member, and a lever .pivoted to said front member and adapted to be hooked over one of said pins for locking said front member upon said casing.
2. In a stapling machine inwhioh a pre- *formed strip of staples is fed forwardly, the
combination with a frame, a cutter bar for guiding the strip of staples to the cutting position, said frame and cutter bar being fixed in relation to each other, a plunger for severing and driving the end sta le of the strip and movable at right ang es to the Cutter bar, and a raceway for the severed staple formed partly by said frame, a front member also forming part of said raeeway, having side walls for straddling the frame, said side walls having Slots, ins on said frame adapted to be received m said Slots,
and a lever pivoted to said front member and adapted to hook over one of said pins 10 for locking the front member to the frame.
