SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,099, dated December '7, 1880.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, DENNIS C. (NBRIEN, of the town of Hornellsville, county of Steuben, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement for Fastening a Tug or Trace to the NVhifdetree of a Carriage, Vagon, or other Vehicle; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention consists of a circular movable plate arranged inside of the end of the whirl tletree-iron, so that when the cockeye is introduced into the end ot' the whifetree-iron it also enters the circular plate by means ot' an opening or notch therein, and the circular plate, heilig movable, is then turned to such a position that the cockeye is removed from the opening at which it entered the whiftletreeiron, so it cannot escape therefrom.

Figure l is a perspective view of lthe device with cockeye introduced and cylinder turned to working position. Fig. 2 is a view showing the whole device, with the movable circular cylinder in position to receive the cockeye. Fig. 3 is a View of the device without the cylinder. Fig. 4 is a View of the cylinder B with parts detached. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the same, showing parts connected.

Into the circular opening F in the whiftletree end C is introduced thel detached cylinder-body Gr until the ilange H meets the sides of the fastening G. The circular plate I is then fastened, by bolts orotherwisc, to the opposite side of the cylinder-body G, the flanges H and I then holdingit in position, the cylinder at the side G being made of a size to turn easily'in the opening F. The cylinderl-E is then turned so that the notch E forms a continuation of the opening J. The cockeye is then introduced through the opening J and into notch E. The cylinder is then turned, by means ot' thumb-piece A, one quarter of a round, as in Fig. l, to a workin g position. The whole is to be made of iron or other suitable metal, and attached to the end of the whifi'letree by screwing or otherwise fastening the device at the point C in the saine line with the whifdetree. u

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The movable notched iianged cylinder B, in combination with the whiftletree end C, provided With notch J, as and for the purpose set forth.
