This invention relates to fastening devices for casement windows, doors and the like, 'ofthe type comprising two substantially aligned espagnolette bolts adapted to be simultaneously shot (and retracted) in opposite directions by means of suitable actuating mechanism.
The main object of the invention is a fastening device of this type, which, owing to the extreme simplicity of its bolt actuating mechanism, is very cheap to manufacture and occupies very little space. With this object in view, the bolts have a U-shaped or similar hollow section, whereas the actuating hand lever is pivoted behind one of the bolts and projects through an aperture thereof so as to be adapted to exert pressure on an edge of said aperture to thereby move the bolt in either direction, the second bolt being coupled, directly or through a connecting rod, to that portion of said lever which extends behind said pivot.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I shall describe, by way of example, two embodiments thereof with reference to the annexed drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of one embodiment of the invention,
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view along the line IIII in Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a second embodiment of the invention, and
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view along the line IV-IV in Fig. 3.
The fastening device shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises two aligned bolts 5 and 6 adapted to be moved towards and from one another by means of an actuating hand lever I hinged on a pivot 9. This pivot is secured to the side walls of a casing 8, into which the adjacent ends of the bolts project. The front wall of the casing has an elongated aperture at ID for the passage of the lever 1.
Each bolt consists of a length of U-section, whose web and flanges have a sliding fit with the front Wall and with the side walls, respectively, of the casing. The web of bolt 6 is provided with an elongated aperture at I I, through which the lever 1 passes, said aperture being sized as to allow the lever to freely move between its extreme positions. Behind the pivot 9, the rear portion of the lever, which projects from the casing, is hinged as at l2 to one end of a pair of parallel coupling rods l3, the other ends of which are pivoted, through a pin [4, to the inner end of bolt 5.
The post of the window frame or the like, to which the flanges 8a of the casing are to be secured, should have a suitable recess to accommodate those portions of the lever l and of the coupling rods l3, which project from the rear of the casing.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the inner end of bolt *5 has an offset portion 5a. ex-
tending, in parallel relation with and just in front of the inner portion of bolt 6, within the correspondingly shaped casing 8. The web of said offset portion has an aperture l5, through which and through an opening ID in the front wall of the casing the actuating lever 1 passes. The pivot 9 of said lever is situated intermediate the offset portion 5a and the second bolt 6. The rearwardly extending end portion of lever 1 projects into the space between two abutment pins l6 and [1 secured to the flanges of bolt 6 so as to directly engage the latter when moving in either direction.
What I claim is: r
1. A latch construction comprising, means defining a latch bolt guideway, two latch bolts mounted in said guideway for sliding reciprocating movement to and from a projected latch effecting position, at least one of said bolts having an aperture therethrough, a bolt operating lever extending through the guideway and freely through the bolt aperture, said lever engaging said bolt only at the defining edges of the aperture therein, means pivotally connecting said lever to said guideway defining means, and means establishing a driving connection between a portion of said lever and said other bolt, the portion of said lever with which said last named means establishes a driving connection being on the opposite side of the pivotal connecting means from the portion which passes through the apertured bolt, whereby one of the bolts is actuated in one direction by the engagement of a portion of the lever with one of its aperture defining walls while the other bolt is actuated in another direc--.

2. A latch construction comprising, means defining a latch bolt guideway, two latch bolts mounted in said guideway for sliding reciprocating movement to and from a projected latch effecting position, at least one of said bolts having an aperture therethrough, a bolt operating lever extending through the guideway and freely through the bolt aperture, said lever engaging said bolt only at the defining edges of the aperture therein, means pivotally connecting said lever to said guideway defining means, and a link pivotally attached to a portion of said lever and to said other bolt, the portion of said lever to which said link is pivoted being on the opposite side of the pivotal connecting means from the portion thereof which passes through the apertured bolt, whereby one of the bolts is actuated in one direction by the engagement of a portion of the lever with one of its aperture defining walls while the other bolt is actuated in another direction through the pivoted link.
3. A latch construction comprising, means defining a latch bolt guideway; two latch bolts mounted in said guideway for sliding reciprocating movement to and from a projected latcheffecting position, at least oneoi said bolts having an aperture therethroughgabolt operating} L lever extending through the guideway and freely through the bolt aperture, said lever engaging said bolt only at the defining edges of the aperture therein, means pivotally connecting said i lever to said guideway defining means, and a pair of pins extending from said other bolt, a portion of said lever extending between said pins, the portion of said lever so extending being on the opposite side of the pivotal connecting means 'from the portion which passesthroughthe apertured bolt, whereby oneoithe' bolts is-actuated in one directionby-the engagement of a portion of the lever with'oneof its aperture defining walls whilethe other bolt is actuated in another direction by engagement of a portion of the lever with one of said pins.
4. A latch construction comprising, means defining a latch bolt guideway of channel cross section, two latch bolts mounted in said guideway for sliding reciprocating movement to and from a projected latch effecting position, at least one of said boltsbeingbf channel cross section and having an aperture therethrough, a bolt operating lever extending through the guideway and freely -through the aperture in the bolt, said lever engaging said bolt solely in the defining edges of the aperture tl'lerein, means pivotally connecting said lever to said guideway defining means, and means establishing a driving connection between a portion of said lever and said other bolt, the portion
