This invention relates to power operated scissors and it is an object of the invention to provide an implement of this kind including relatively movable blades, together with means operable at the will of the user to cause such relative movement of the blades to be at one speed selected from several different speeds.
It is also an object of the invention to provide an implement of this kind including a motor carried by the implement for effecting, as desired, swinging movement of one cutting blade with respect to another and wherein means are provided to cause the movement of the swinging blade to be at such differing speeds within certain limitations as may be desired by the user.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved power operated scissors whereby certain important advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be better understood. I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a view in top plan of power operated scissors constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 55 of Figure 2; and
Figure 6 is a detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 66 of Figure 2.
In the embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, M denotes an elongated tubular handle member of desired dimensions but of a size to be readily and conveniently held by a hand of the user. The outer end of the member M, which is tubular, is closed by a head or plate I, which may be applied and held in place in any manner preferred.
The opposite end of the member M carries a hollow head H, herein disclosed as of a general pear-like form with the smaller end forwardly disposed and the rear larger end portion of a maximum diameter in excess of the adjacent inner end of the handle member H. It is believed to be obvious, however, that the form of this head H may be of such other design or appearance as may be deemed preferable.
Mounted within the handle member M at the central portion thereof is an electric motor E of a type wherein the armature or drive shaft 2 has longitudinal movement so that the same may be shifted, as desired, to different selective posi tions for a purpose to be hereinafter explained.
This shaft 2, at required points fore and aft of the motor E, carries the surrounding collars or fianges'Z' which, by contact with the motor E, limit the endwise movement of the shaft 2 in etiher direction. The shaft 2 is of a length to have its forward portion at all times extending within the head H, and the extremity of such forward portion, in the present embodiment of the invention, is formed to provide three successive steps 4, with the smallest of such steps outermost.
Slidably engaged on each of the steps 4 is a disk 5 having its periphery formed to provide a spiral cam. the high point of which in radial alignment with its low point at the edge portion b between such high and low points being straight. The disk 5 is held in place upon its step 4 by a key 6, herein disclosed as a cotter pin, insertible through the shaft 2 in advance of and immediately adjacent to the applied disk.
The several disks 5 mounted on the steps 4 are of the same design but the high points thereof progressively differ with the disk having the shorter of such high points arranged innermost.
The outer end of the head H is formed to provide a slot 1 through which extends the inner extremity of the stationary scissors blade 8, and such extremity within the head H is provided with a laterally disposed tang or short arm 9 to facilitate the rigid attachment of the blade 8 by the bolts It], or otherwise as may be desired.
Associated with the blade 8 and coacting therewith in a well known manner is the swinging scissors blade ll having its inner or rear portion pivotally held to the inner or rear portion 1 of the blade 8 by a conventional pivot member 2. This arm M is constantly maintained in contact with the periphery of a disk 5 by the expansible or pressure member l5, herein disclosed as a coil spring, interposed between the arm I4 and the wall of the head H.
When the arm I 4 is in contact with the low point of the cam edge of a disk 5, the blade ll, through the action of the member or spring I5, is in fully closed position with respect to the stationary blade 8 but as the shaft 2 rotates, the selected disk 5 will throw or swing the blade into open position. It is believed to be obvious that the extent of outward swinging movement of the blade I I may be varied by proper endwise movement of the shaft 2 to bring the required disk 5 into working position with respect to the arm 14 of the blade H.
The handle member M at diametrically opposed points is provided with the longitudinally disposed slots 15 which are positioned between the motor E and the head H. Passing out through these slots 16 are the outer extremities of the aligned straight arms l'l. Each of these arms I! exteriorly of the member H carries a slide H! for a purpose to be later explained.
Interposed between the inner ends of the arms I I and rigid therewith are the spaced annular members l9 which freely surround the shaft 2. The shaft 2 between these members l9 carries a surrounding outstanding flange 2%, so that upon shifting the members IS in either direction lengthwise of the shaft, one of the members l9 will contact the flange 20 and impose corresponding endwise movement to the shaft 2. The extent of this endwise movement of the shaft 2 deter mines which of the disks 5 will be brought into position for working the arm 14. These shifting movements are readily and conveniently effected from the action of a digit of the hand grasping the member M on either of the slides l8.
Side faces of the slides 8 are provided with index markings 2| for ccaction with the indication graduations 22 positioned on the outer surface of the member M at required spaced points along the slots 55 and immediately adjacent thereto whereby the operator can readily determine the desired endwise adjustment of the shaft 2 to bring the desired disk 5 in working position with respect to the arm [4.
Leading from the motor E are the conductor wires 23 in required connection with the switch 24 mounted within the member M closely adjacent to the head or plate I, the operating lever 25 extending out through a suitable opening 28 in the head or plate I. Leading from the switch 24, and passing out through the head or plate I, are the conductors 28 adapted for connection with a suitable source of electrical energy.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a power operated scissors constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well. adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.
What is claimed is:
1. Power operated scissors comprising a handle member, a stationary scissor blade carried by the member, a swinging blade pivoted to the stationary blade, an arm extending from the swinging blade, a motor carried by the handle member, an endwise movable shaft driven by the motor, a plurality of cams carried by the shaft, each of said cams having a high point differing from the remaining cams, and means for moving the shaft endwise to bring a selected cam into working position with respect to the arm to move the swinging blade relative to the stationary blade.
2. Power operated scissors comprising a handle member, a stationary scissor blade carried by the member, a swinging blade pivoted to the stationary blade, an arm extending from the swinging blade, a motor carried by the handle member, an endwise movable shaft driven by the motor, a plurality of cams carried by the shaft, each of said cams having a high point differing from the remaining cams, means for moving the shaft endwise to bring a selected cam into working position with respect to the arm to move the swinging blade away from the stationary blade, and pressure means for moving the swinging blade toward the stationary blade.
3. Power operated scissors comprising a handle member including a hollow head, a stationary scissor blade carried by the head and xtending forwardly therefrom, a swinging blade coacting with the stationary blade, means for pivotally mounting the swinging blade, an arm extending from the swinging blade into the head, a motor carried by the handle member, an endwise movable shaft driven by the motor, a plurality of cams carried by the shaft for selective contact with the arm for moving the swinging blade, each of said cams having a high point differing from the remaining cams, and means for endwise moving the shaft to bring a selected cam into working position with respect to the arm of the swinging blade.
4. Power operated scissors comprising a handle member including a hollow head, a stationary scissor blade carried by the head and extending forwardly therefrom, a swinging blade coacting with the stationary blade, means for pivotally mounting the swinging blade, an arm extending from the swinging blade into the head, a motor carried by the handle member, an endwise movable shaft driven by the motor, a plurality of cams carried by the shaft for selective contact with the arm for moving the swinging blade, each of said cams having a high point differing from the remaining cams, a wall of the head having a slot, an arm extending into the head through the slot, and an operative connection between said second arm and the shaft to move the shaft endwise upon movement of the shaft along the slot to bring a selected cam into working position with respect to the arm of the swinging blade.
5. Power operated scissors comprising a handle member including a hollow head, a stationary scissor blade carried by the head and extending forwardly therefrom, a swinging blade coacting with the stationary blade, means for pivotally mounting the swinging blade, an arm extending from the swinging blade into the head, a motor carried by the handle member, an endwise movable shaft driven by the motor, a plurality of cams carried by the shaft for selective contact with the arm for moving the swinging blade, each of said cams having a high point differing from the remaining cams, the wall of the head at substantially diametrically opposed points being provided with slots, arms within the head and extending out through said slots, members interposed between and rigid with the arms, said members surrounding the shaft and being spaced apart lengthwise of the shaft, and an outstanding part carried by the shaft extending between the surrounding parts and with which said surrounding members contact to move the shaft the head at points spaced along the shaft, each cam having a high point differing from the remaining cams, means operable exteriorly of the head for endwise moving the shaft to bring a selected cam into working position with respect to the arm of the swinging blade to move said swinging blade away from the stationary blade, and means for imposing pressure on the arm to move the swinging blade toward the stationary w blade.
