LAMP SHADE AND REFLECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,763, dated November 23, 1880,
Application filed September 20, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS P. FoRsY'rH, of Oonnellsville, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp Shades and Reflectors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my combined lamp shade and reflector applied to a lamp. Fig. 2 is a front or face view of the shade detached with its movable slide partially down. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the same, showing the slide up and out of the way; and Fig. 4 is ahorizontal section through the shield and slide.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to lamp-shades, which may also, when desired, be used as reflectors; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts of a shade of that class, as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the shade or reflector-shield, which is made of tin or other suitable sheet metal, and may, if desired, be nickel-or silver plated on the inside, facing the light, and painted any preferred color on the outside. This shield is of the shape clearly shown in the drawings that is, it is cut with a rounded top, a, and has a concave cut or arc, b, at the bottom. It is secured upon the lamp-chimney by means of an upper and a lower spring-holder, denoted respectively by B O, which are made, preferably, by inserting a thin piece of wire through small holes or apertures c 0 cl (1 in (No model.)
forming the ends with hooks, so that they cannot slip out of their respective holes in the shield.
When the shades are nested and packed for transportation, arms B O are folded down flat upon the shield, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
D is a slide, also made of sheet metal, and plated or painted to correspond to the shield of which it forms a part. The ends of this slide are doubled to form flanges e e, which slide upon the straight parallel sides of the shield. It may be raised or lowered by means of a little hook or knob, f, soldered to its back, and is kept in its adjusted position upon the shield by a corrugated metal strip, g, affixed to the back of the shield. A small spring may, if preferred, be substituted for the corrugated strip.
The shade is affixed upon the lamp-chimney by means of the spring clamps B C, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, by simply slipping the clamps around the top and base of the chimney.
lt'desi-red, the lower clamp may be placed around the neck of the lamp, below the base of the chimney, resting upon the top of the oil chamber, which makes a much deeper shade behind the shield than if both clamps are affixed upon the chimney.
By raising or lowering the slide D the volume of light passing out under the shade can be regulated easily and instantly, and by the shape of the reflector (facing the light) a reflected belt or band of light is thrown across the shield, which may be concentrated upon any point.
It is obvious that one, two, or more shades may be used upon a single lamp.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combined lamp shade and reflector consisting of the shield A, having straight sides, an arched top, a, and concave bottom b, and provided with the adjustable slide D, and also with means for attachment to a lamp or lamp-chimney, substantially as set forth.
2.
