Description

(ModeL) A. T. BROWN.
7 Lock for Fire Arms.
Patented 'Nov. 23,1880.
O v o a it T-N sw UNITED STATES PATENT Erica,
ALEXANDER T. BROWN, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO PETER BURNS, OFSAME PLACE.
LOCK FOR FIRE-ARMS.
SPECIFICATION forniing part of Letters Patent No. 234,749, dated November 23, 1880.
' Application filed October 2,1880. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ALEXANDER T. BnowN, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looks for Fire- Arms, and that the following, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full description thereof.
My invention relates particularly to locks for three-barreled guns of the character described in H. Bakers Patents, Nos.l67,293, dated the 31st day of August, 1875, and 198,333, dated the 18th day of December, 1877, in which a rifle-barrel is arranged below and between the barrels of a double-barreled shotgun and it consists of an inside hammer pivoted in the trigger-plate and working between the side locks, and provided with means by which itmay at pleasure be connected with 20 the tumbler of one of the side locks, and thus be operated by the maiuspring of said side lock; or, when so connected and it is found desirable to fire the shot-barrel first, that it may be easily disconnected. In this manner 2 5 I simplify the look by dispensing entirely with the mainsprin g, a sear, and sear-spring for the lock of the rifle-barrel.
Referring now to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the frame of the gun with the o right-hand lock removed, showing the mechanism of the left-hand and inside locks. Fig. 2 is a view of the inside hammer and. its pivoted hook; and Fig. 3 is a View of the lower part of the outside hammer and its tumbler. 3 5 a indicates the outside hammer; b, its tunibler; c, an arm projecting from said tumbler Z), and provided at its end with a projecting pin or screw, d. c is the inside hammer, pivoted in an opening in the trigger-plate, as 40 shown in Fig, 1, and fis a hook pivoted to said hammer e in rear of the pivot of the latter. j is the comb or finger-piece of the hammer e, which extends below the trigger-plate, and by which the hammer c is cocked. m is a 5 link to which the mainspringgof the side lock is connected, the lower end of said link'being connected to the tumbler b in the manner described in W. H. Bakers Patent, No. 199,7 73, dated the 29th day of January, 1878. iis the sear which engages with the tumbler Z). 70 is a spring, arranged on the under side of the tang of the frame so as to bear on the hammer e and hold it by frictional contact either in its cooked or uncooked position, so as to secure certainty of action.
The operation of this mechanism is as follows: When it is desired to fire the rifle-barrel the outside hammer is first full-cocked. By this operation the arm 0 is carried down into a position to be engaged by the hook f.
The hammer e is then cocked by pressing against the finger-piece j. In this operation the pivotal point of the hook is carried down ward, and the rear edge or side of said. hook comes in contact with the end of the opening in which the hammer is pivoted, and is thereby turned forward so as to bring the hook in the line of travel of the pin 61 on the arm 0, and these parts are engaged and the hammer e is carried forward by the force of the main- 7o spring g, and caused to strike its firing-pin.
The length of the hook f is such that when the hammer e is arrested the hammer on will not have finished its stroke, and will be prevented from striking its firing-pin, and the rifle-barrel will alone he fired. When, however, it is desired to tire the shot-barrel the hammer c is not cocked, and the hook will then not engage the arm 0, and then hammer to will be free to fall, or, the hammers having been brought into engagement with each other, they may be disconnected by letting the hammer a down and then recocking it. This will leave the hammer c in its uncooked position, and the hook will not engage the arm 0 when the hammer to is discharged.
It is evident that instead of relying on the end of the opening in the trigger-plate to move the hook into position to engage the arm 6, a pin or stud may project from the lock-plate, and that the arm 0 may be arranged on the tumbler of either of the sidelocks.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1.. In a gun-lock of the character described, 9 5 the combination of an inside hammer pivoted in the tri gger-plateand provided with a pivoted book, as shown, and the hammer and tumbler of the side lock, the parts being' arranged to be as described, whereby either the inside or outeonneeted and disconnected substantially in side hammer may be actuated by the same ro the manner and for the purpose described. mainspring, as described.
2. The combination of the; hammer a and tumbler I), provided with arm 0 and pin d, the ALEXANDER BROWN hammer e and its pivoted hook f, arranged to Witnesses be connected with and disconnected from the L. 0. SMITH, arm 0 and pin 41 in the manner substantially GEO. LIVERMORE.
