Application November 24, 1942, Serial No. 466,747
4 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in tool holders for metal planers whereby several tools or cutters may be secured in operative position for cutting engagement with respect to the Work to be planed, and in which the tools or cutters may be independently adjusted at a desired angle.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a plurality of tool or cutter holders adapted for movement independently of each other into and out of cutting position.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in performance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan View.
Figure 2 is a front elevational View.
Figure 3 is a side elevational View.
Figures 4 and 5 are vertica1 longitudinal sectional views taken respectively on the lines i-ll and 5-5 of Figure 2, and
Figure 6 is a horizontal sectional View through the tool holder.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates the clapper box having the arcuate slot 6 in the rear edge thereof adapted for attaching to a support on the planer.
The surface of the clapper box 5 is formed with the spaced parallel cheeks 'I through which is inserted the pin 8 for pivotally mounting the inner end of the tool block 9 thereto. The tool block is provided with the spring projected catch IB engaging one of the cheeks I to secure the tool block in a stationary position between the cheeks.
A plurality of studs II are arranged in pairs adjacent the side edges thereof and on the front and rear pairs of studs are mounted the cross plates IZ for clamping the tool I3 to the tool block by means of the nuts I4 threaded on the studs.
At each side edge of the clapper box 5 is a bracket I5 having an angular flange I5 formed thereon recessed in the side of the clapper box to and rear ends of the bracket being secured to the adjacent cheek by screws I'i and I8 on which spacing collars I9 and 2U are mounted to space the front and rear ends of the bracket from their respective cheeks. e
Between each of the brackets I5 and the adjacent cheeks 1 are the side tool posts 2l which are of tubular construction to receive the cutters 22, the upper surface of the tool posts having slots 23 formed therein for receiving head bolts 24 threaded through a backing plate 25 positioned in the tool posts, the ends of the bolts engaging the cutter to secure the same in position. A set screw 26 also is threaded through the side of the tool post for engaging the side of the cutter to likewise secure the cutter in adjusted position.
Projecting from the lower surface of the tool post 2Iis a ange 21 freely positioned between the bracket I5 and the adjacent cheek l, the rear end of the flange being pivoted on the pin 8. A notch 28 is formed in the lower edge of the flange 21, adjacent its frontend to prevent interference of the flange with the front screw I l of the bracket.
The tool posts 2| at the opposite side of the clapper box are of identical construction and accordingly a detailed description of one will sufnce for both.
An opening 29 is formed in each bracket I5 in alignment with an opening 30 in the adjacent flange 21 of the tool post and adapted for receiving a locking pin 3| for securing the tool post against movement during the cutting action.
From .the foregoing it will be apparent that either the tool box 9 or the tool posts ZI may be independently swung into and out of position upon the pin 8.
It is believed the details of construction, operation and manner of use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing Without further detailed explanation.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l.. A tool holder of the class described comprislng a clapper box, a plurality of tool holders carried by the clapper box and including a central tool holder and a pair of side tool holders, a hinge pin providing a common pivotal mountmg for all of said holders, and means for individually securing the holders against movement on the clapper box.
I 2. A tool holder of the class described comprismg a clapper box, a pair of spaced parallel cheeks support the lower edge of the bracket, the front 55 on the box, a pin transversely of the cheeks, a
plurality of tool holders pivotally mounted on the pin and including a central tool holder and a pair of side tool holders, and means for individually securing the holders against movement on the box.
3. A `tool holder of the class described comprising a clapper box, a pair of spaced parallel cheeks on the box, a pin transversely of the cheeks, a central tool post pivotally mounted on the pin, brackets secured at opposite sides of the box in spaced parallel relation to the cheeks, a pair of tool posts pivotally mounted on the pin adjacent the ends of the pin and including a flange positioned between the adjacent cheek and bracket, a tubular tool holder on the flange, and means engaging the flanges for securing the latterk against movement on the box.
4. A tool holder of the class described comprising a clapper box, a pair of spaced parallel cheeks on the box, a pin transversely of the cheeks, a central tool post pivotally mounted on the pin, brackets secured at opposite sides of the box in spaced parallel relation to the cheeks, a pair of tool posts pivotally mounted on the pin adjacent the ends of the pin and including a flange positioned between the adjacent cheek and bracket, a tubular tool holder on the flange, said brackets and flanges having aligned openings and a pin insertable in the openings for securing the last- A named posts against movement on the box.
