PLOW BOTTOM Filed 061. '6. 1941 2 INVENTOR Herbert N. Baker 7 s\\\\\\\\ W TIZRNEYS I Patented Apr. 25, 1944 PLOW BOTTOM I Herbert N. Baker, Syracuse, N. Y., assignor to Syracuse Chilled Plow Company, Inc., Syracuse, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application October 6, 1941, Serial No. 413,755 17 Claimsf (01; 97-125) This invention relates enerally to agricultural implements and more particularly to plows and other earth working tools.
The object and general nature of the present invention is the provision of certain new and useful improvements in plows of the type having a' detachable andreplaceable point, and it is also an important feature of this invention to provide a novel point particularly constructed to facili-- tate attaching the same and to improve the operating efiiciency of the point.
More specifically, it is a feature of this invention to provide a plow having a separate wing, the landside 'edge' of which is spaced from the landside-face'of the frog to which the wing and moldboard are attached, with a detachable and replaceable point and clamping means carried by the frog and having a wedging action against the pointand reacting against the frog for,'first, drawing the replaceable'point into proper position and holding the same in that positiomand second, to establish a lateral clamping action between the point and the landside may be held firmly and rigidly in position. In this connection, it is a further feature of this invention to provide improved clamping means of the wedge'type which not only draws the point j face of' the frog, whereby the detachable point into proper position, generally longitudinally of the frog, but also forces thepoint generally laterally against the adjacent edge of the wing or blade.
Still further, it is a feature of this invention to provide a plow of the separate wing and de'- tachable point type; in which the adjacent and substantiallycontactin edges of the wing and point are beveled, whereby the adjacent portion of the point overlies the beveled edge of the wing or blade. In this connection it is also a feature of this invention to provide a lateral extension on the point which isformed to overlap the junction between the wing andpoint so as to prevent rootsan-d the like froni'entering the space between the pointand .wing orblade.
These and other objects and. advantages of the present invention will be apparent tothose skilled-in the art-after a consideration of the following detailed description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing. In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan View of a plow bottom in which the principles of the present invention have been incorporated;
- Figure 2 is a fragmentary enlarged bottom view, showing in particular the detachable point and the clamping wedging meanssecuring the point 'to the plow bottom frog in overlapping relation with respect to the adjacent portion of the wing or blade} Figure 3 is an enlarged section taken along the line 33 of Figure 2 I Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the wedge end of the drawbolt shown generally in Figures 2 and 3;
Figure 5 is a bottomyiew of the detachable point; and
Figure 6 is a section taken through the point substantially on the line 6-5 of Figure 5.
Referring now to the drawing, more particu larly to Figures 1 and 2','the plow bottom I have chosen to illustrate the present invention is indicated in Figure 1 in its entirety by the reference numeral l and comprises a construction that is more or less conventional -including a frog 2 which serves as the'supporting means for the otherparts, a inol'dboard 3 and a landside 4, connected by a brace 5. The plow bottom I also includes a wing or blade 6 which preferably'is connected to the frog 2 by a pair of plow bolts 1 so as to form a continuation of the moldboard surface. The wing or blade 6 includes-a landside edge 9 which iss'paced laterally from the landside face of the moldboard and landside, indicated by the reference numeral l I. The landside portion of the frog 2 is indicated in Figure 2 by the reference numeral l2, and the edge of this portion of the frog lies in or adjacent the plane of the landside face ll mentioned above;
According to the principles of the present invention I provide a separate detachable and replaceable plow point or share indicated inits entirety by the reference numeral lb. The point 15 is of particular construction and is designed to be detachably' connected to the frog 2 so as to lie in the spacebetween the landside'edge of the wing 6,-the forward edge of the moldboard 3'at the landside portion thereof, 'iri'di'catedv'by the reference numeral I6, and the landside plane of the plow bottom I. Preferably; the detachable point or share I5 is of cast construction, emf bodyinga wedge shaped point proper, indicated by the reference numeral l'L-this' portion being formed at the forward'end of a thickened blade section It. The landside edge of the point 15 is bolt serves to hold the point down against the upper face of said frog, and said cooperating surfaces being disposed at an angle to the plane of the landside face of said frog, whereby tightening said draw bolt serves to force said part of the point laterally against the landside face of the frog.
