CHARLES H. TRIPHAGEN, OF PEWAMO, MICHIGAN.
VEHICLE-WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,506, dated November 16, 1880.
Application filed October S, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. TRIPI-IA- GEN, of Pewamo, in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Carriage-Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of carriage-wheels; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts by means of which a wheel of great lightness, durability, and strength is obtained, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section through the center of the hub, with the spokes shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section 011 the line a? as, Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A A represent two parts of the hub, made of cast metal, hollow or like cups, the outer ends thereof being open, while their inner ends, a a, are solid. with a central perforation in each, and with the inner faces of each provided with a circumferential projection, b. The central perfoations are threaded, as shown, to engage with correspondin g right and left hand threads upon each end of a metallic cylinder, B, by means of which the two parts of the hub A A are secured together, leaving a space between the two ends a a to receive the spokes O, the sides of which are notched to engage with the projections 12, while their inner ends rest upon the circumference of the cylinder B.
(Model.)
D is a sand-band, made of cast metal, hollow, its outer end being open, its inner end being solid, as shown, with a central perforation, threaded to engage with a similar thread upon the inner end of the pipe-box E, which passes forward through the parts A A and cylinder B, when its forward end, being threaded, passes through a central perforation, correspondingly threaded, in the hollow metallic band F, which forms the outer end of the hub.
The outer ends of the parts A A are interiorly-threaded, as shown, to engage with corresponding threads upon the exterior of the inner ends of the bands D F, or, if preferred, these bands may be cast with flanges projectin g inward, and such flanges may be interiorlythreaded to engage with exterior threads upon the outer ends of the parts A A.
By this means of construction a strong, light, and durable wheel is obtained, the parts being easily removed for necessary repairs and for the insertion of new spokes when required.
What I claim as my invention is The vehicle-hub described, consisting of the hollow metallic shells A A, having the flanges b, the short cylinder B, by which such metallic shells are kept in place, the sand-bands D F, screwed to the metallic shells A A, and the pipe-box E, secured to the said bands D F, all constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown.
CHARLES H. TRIPHAGEN.
