Description
(NoModeL) W. W. THOMAN. Hat Body.
No. 234,505. P atented' Nov. 16, I880.
@itnmms 2 llwirnn STATES ATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM W. THOMAN, OF CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY.
HAT-BO DY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,505, dated November 16, 1880.
Application filed Ap1il14, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. THOMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Camden, and State of New Jersey, have invented anew and. useful Improvement in Hat-Bodies, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the hat-body embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section in line am, Fig. 1. I
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Bodies for felt-hats have been formed of a top piece and two or more side pieces of gossamer united and forming seams, which eventually produce objectionable features of well-defined lines in the body of the hat.
My invention is designed to remedy this defeet; and it consists of the gossamer body of a felt-hat formed seamless.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the gossamer body of a felt orlow-down hat, and B the rim thereof. The body is shown as formed of two thicknesses of gossamer, the inner one being shellaced and stretched or pulled over the block, and the outer one being stretched or pulled over the inner one and coated with shellac, the brim being properly applied; but I do not limit myself to two thick nesses, as one or more than two may be used, if desired.
Each thickness of the body A is formed of a single piece of gossamer stretched or pulled over the block into crown shape, so that the only seam is at the base or place of connection with the brim, and this is afterward (N0 model.)
covered by the felt body at the place where the band is applied.
It will be seen that as the gossamer body is a seamless piece of material it may be easily and quickly produced, and the subsequentformation of lines or marks in the felt body in any conspicuous place is prevented.
The first layer of gossamer is wetted with shellac and then dried. The second layer is then wetted with shellac and applied over the first and dried. This outer layer is then further coated with shellac to fill up the pores. The brim is afterward secured, and the felt is applied to complete a hat..
I am aware that it is not broadly new to stiffen hat-bodies or hat-linings with shellac; also, that it is not new to form hat-linings on a block and pull the felt over them. I do not claim these constructions or methods of manufacture nor do I claim the subject-matter of Patents 81,089 nor 41,261, nor the ordinary pull-over hat.
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The process of manufacturing hat-lining bodies consisting in first wetting a layer of gossamer with shellac, then drawing said layer over a block, then drying the same, then wetting a second layer of gossamer with shellac, drawing it over the first layer and drying it, then coating this outer layer with shellac, and finally securing the brim to the hat-lining body, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Witnesses: W. W. THOMAN.
