` 16 Claims. (Cl. 24-205) This invention relates to separable fasteners employing sliders movable along stringers to couple and uncouple the same. More particularly, the invention relates to a duplex slider structure which is termed a shuttle body movable along a pair of stringers to maintain constant coupling engagement of the stringers while maintaining an opening of predetermined contour and size within the slider body, thereby facilitating movement of this opening along the stringers from one end to the other end thereof.

vIn certain uses and adaptations of separable fasteners oi' the kind employing stringers coupled and uncoupled by a slider movable along the stringers, there are occasions where it is desirable to move a member of some type or kind between the stringers or through the opening controlled by the stringers while maintaining stringer ends in closed position,4 for example in providing an elongated slot or opening in 'a supporting body, for example, a gun slot, and in moving the barrel of a gun longitudinally of the slot or opening while keeping the slot substantially closed at points other than the position occupied by the gun barrel.
For purposes of the kind generally indicated above, I provided what I term a shuttle slider, that is to say, an enlarged slider body having an opening therein shaped to receive the member.
For exan'ple, the gun barrel and said body having contr cted end portions so shaped as to freely couple and uncouple the links or'scoops of the stringers of a separable fastener.
In. Figs. l and 2 of the drawing-is shown one adaptation of the invention and in these figures Ill and II represent the two stringers which are to be coupled and uncoupled by .the shuttle slider body I2. In the present construction the links or scoops I3 of the stringer II and I0 are of the double action type, that is to say, are captions on the slider and freely operated to couple and uncouple the stringers.
The stringers Ill and II are secured to suitable supporting strips I4, I5 employed to attach the stringers to supports which would generally dene an elongated slot or opening. In other words, a slot in which a gun barrel would be free to move.
The slider body as disclosed in Figsl and 2, comprises an inner ring like member I6, having contracted projecting ends I'l, which ends take the place of the parting webs of conventional slider bodies and are employed in the present construction to separate and divert the links of the opposed stringers into channels I8 and I9, arranged at opposite sides of the shuttle body The channels I8 and I9 are partially formed by corresponding top and bottom plates 20, 2i, v
which are vsecured to the ring like body I6 as indicated at 22 and project beyond the body I6 and have at their free edges inturned flanges 23.
It will apepar from a consideration of Fig. 2 of the 'drawing ythat the anges 23 of one plate, the plate 20, are spaced from the ilanges of the other plate 2|, which provide channel openings for permitting free passage of the Stringer tapes therethrough. The flanges 23 conform generally to the outer peripheral contour of the body I6 and extended beyond the projecting webs I1 in contracted end portions 24, and 25. These end portions may each be said to comprise a conventional sllder structure, thus producing of the complete shuttle body a duplex slider.- The channels |8 and I9 merely serve as means for guiding the links of the stringers from one slider end to the other.
At this point, attention is directed to the disclosure in Fig. 5 of the drawing, in which a shuttle body 26 substantially of the same construction as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is employed but instead of depending upon the flanges 23 of the plates 2|), 2| to produce the slider ends 24, 25, actual conventional sliders 21 are freely seated in slider receiving sockets 28 at end portions of the shuttle body 25.

'Ihe flanges 32 oi' the shuttle body 25 will also be offset outwardly to accommodate the flanges 33 of the slider 21. It will be understood that both ends of the shuttle body 25 will be of the same construction.
In Fig. 5, portions of two stringers 34 and 35 are indicated, and these stringers have double action scoops or links 55 which differ in construction from the links I3. As these links form no specific part of the present invention, no detailed description thereof is given.
In Fig. 3 of the drawing is shown a slight modification of thev construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2,`and this modification comprises simply making the complete shuttle body 31 of two similar end portions hinged together as seen at 38, so that the end portions are free to swing on the pivots of the hinges to compensate for diiIerent curvatures of a support in connection with which the shuttle body may be mounted.
Here it is to be pointed out that in some in- 3 stances the shuttles may travel in a straight path when the slotted or apertured supports for the stringers are straight. In other instances, the support will have a more or less constant curvature, in such cases this curvature will be procated in section in the socket 49 but the slider of the socket 50 has been omitted.
The two parts 4| and 42 are riveted or otherwise secured together as indicated at 54. Extending from the socket ends 49 and 50 along the sides of the shuttle body 40 are channels 55 so shaped as to angularly dispose the links 55 of stringers 51 at the wide lsides of the shuttle body, thereby facilitating a closer t and operation of the shuttle body in the aperture or opening of a support, and also minimizing the ilexure of the Stringer and supporting tapes, as will be apparent from a consideration of Fig.- 2 of the drawing, in which figure an approximate folding of the tape is illustrated as would be the case eral shape and contour of the shuttle body will be varied to suit, first the member to be disposed therein, and then'the support in connection with which the stringers are mounted. The hinge construction or pivoting of the separate ends of the shuttle 51 may be accomplished in many ways, however, in the accompanying drawing, and as will be seen in Fig. 4, the hinges 35 may simply be disposed upon one side surface, preferably the convexed surface 39 of the shuttle body.
In Figs. 6 and "I of the drawing is illustrated another adaptation of the invention and this differs primarily from the structures shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, in the fact that the entire v shuttle body 4|| is composed of two intertting parts rather than from a ring in two side plates.
With this construction both parts 4| and 42 will include inner ring portions made to seat one upon the other, the ring portion of the part 4| being rounded, as seen at 43 to facilitate free movement of an article or member such as a gun barrel 44 therein: Whereas the ring portion of the part 42 has 'an extending annular skirt 45,

A device for supporting stringers of separable fasteners in -spaced relationship to each other while maintaining end portions of the stringers in coupled relationship, said device comprising a large slider body having an opening centrally thereof, said portions of said body having channels for receiving and guiding the links of the stringers when supported, by said body, in predetermined paths in spaced relationship to each other, end portions of said body being contracted, and means at said end portions for coupling and uncoupling the links of the stringers and for guiding the links into said channels and means intermediate said ends to direct said `stringers collectively in a curved path conformed to the curvature of a support surface.

A device for supporting stringers of separable fasteners in spaced relationship to each other while maintaining. end portions of the stringers in coupled relationship, said device comprising a large slider body having an opening centrally thereof, side portions of said body having channels for receiving and guiding the links of the stringers when supported, by said body, in spaced relationship to each other, end portions of said body being contracted, means at said end portions for coupling and uncoupling the links of the stringers and for guiding the links into said channels, and said last named means comprising housings Within which slider members are freely supported in connection with the contracted end portions of said boCLV- 6. A device for supporting stringers of separable fasteners in spaced relationship to each other while maintaining end portions of the stringers in coupled relationship, said device comprising a large slider body having an opening centrally thereof, side portions of said body having channels 4for receiving and guiding the links of the stringers when supported, by said body, in spaced relationship to each other, end portions of said body being contracted, means at said end portions for coupling and uncoupling the links of the stringers and for guiding the links into said channels, the opening in said body being adapted to receive a member movable longitudinally of the stringers, and flexible means forming a seal between said member and of said body.

The combination with two conventional sliders employed for coupling and uncoupling stringers of separable fasteners, of a large apertured body having means at end portions thereof for supporting said sliders against displacement therefrdm and in Wide spaced relationship to each other, each of said sliders comprising a channelled member having diverging channels at one end contracted to a single channel at the other end thereof, the contracted ends of said sliders being directed outwardly at the ends of said body, and said body having stringer guide channels registering with the diverging channels of both sliders, said channels being shaped to support the links of the stringers in a position angular to the normal coupling position thereof.

The combination with two conventional sliders employed for coupling and uncoupling stringers of separable fasteners, of a large apertured body, having means at end portions thereof for supporting said sliders against displacement therefrom and in wide spaced relationship to each other, each of said sliders comprising a channelled member having diverging channels at one end contracted to a single channel at the other end thereof, the contracted ends of said sliders being directed outwardly at the ends of said body, said body having stringer guide channels registering with the diverglng channels of both sliders, said body being composed of separate parts, and means for securing said parts together, said parts having recessed portions forming a housing within which said sliders are supported when the parts are secured together.

The combination with two conventional sliders employed for coupling and uncoupling stringers of separable fasteners, of a large apertured body, having means at end portions thereof for supporting said sliders against displacement therefrom and in wide spaced relationship to each other, each of said sliders comprising a channelled member having diverging channels at one end contracted to a single channel at the other end thereof, the contracted ends of said sliders being directed outwardly at the ends of said body, said body having Stringer guide channels registering with the diverging channels of both sliders, said body being composed of separate parts, means for securing said parts together,
' and end portions of said body having housings within which the sliders are freely supported.

The combination with two conventional sliders employed for coupling and uncoupling stringers of separable fasteners, of a large apertured body, having means at end portions thereof for supporting said sliders against displacement therefrom and in wide spaced relationship to each other, each of said sliders comprising a channelled member having diverging channels at one end contracted to a single channel at the other end thereof, the contracted ends of said sliders being directed outwardly at the ends of said body, said body having stringer guide channels registering with the diverging channels of both sliders, said body being composed of separate parts, means for securing said parts together, end portions of said body having sockets in which the sliders are freely supported, and one part of said body having a projecting sleeve portion bordering the aperture of said bom.

A shuttle slider 'for stringers of separable fasteners, said slider comprising a large apertured body having spaced channels bordering opposed sides of the aperture inV said body, said channels converging to single channels at opposite contracted end portions of said body, and webs inwardly of said contracted ends dividing the single channels into said side channels, said body having an arcuate contour adapted to conform to the curved surface of a support.

A shuttle slider for stringers of separable fasteners, said slider comprising a large apertured body having spaced channels bordering opposed sides of the aperture in said body, said channels converging to single channels at opposite contracted end portions of said body, webs inwardly oi' said contracted ends dividing the single channels into said side channels, Aand means centrally of the side portions of said body providing relative movement of the contracted end portions of said body.
15. A device for supporting stringers oi separable fasteners in spaced relationship to each other while maintaining end portions of the stringers in coupled relationship, said device comprising a large slider body having an opening centrally thereof, side portions of said body having channels for receivingand guiding the links of the stringers when supported, by said body, in spaced relationship to each other, end portions ot said body being contracted, means at said end portions for coupling and uncoupling the links of the stringer and for guiding the links into said channels, and said channels at opposite sides of said body supporting the links of'the stringers in a position angularly to the normal coupling position thereof.
16. The combination with spaced sliders arranged upon stringers of separable fasteners employing double action scoops, of means coupling and supporting said sliders in spaced relationship to each other, said means also including means supporting and guiding uncoupled stringers vin predetermined paths in spaced relationship to each other intermediate said spaced sliders in the movement of the sliders alongsaid stringers and CERTIFICATE or conREc'rIoN. patent Np. 2,5l4lhou9..
