Description

March 14, 1944. B. 5. KING SAFETY RAZOR BLADE SHARPENER Filed Feb. 3, 1943 4 (yyz,
IN V EN 7:0R.
ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 14-, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,343,981 SAFETY RAZOR BLADE SHARPENER Benton S. King, Brookhaven, Miss. Application February 3, 1943, Serial No. 474,565
2 Claims.
My invention relates to safety razor blades, and has among its objects and advantages the provision of an improved blade sharpener comprising only two working parts which are of simple and durable construction. These parts may be made from glass or any other material having sharpening properties.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is an end view.
Figure 2 is a side view.
Figure 3 is a sectional view along the line 3--3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional view along the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a side View of a rotary part, and
Figure 6 is a view of the same part in a different position.
In the embodiment of the invention selected for illustration, I make use of a glass cup Iii having an end wall l2 and a flange l4 constituting a continuation of the end wall extended beyond the perimeter of the cup H3. This cup is circular in cross section. A flange I5 is formed at the opposite end of the wall l8 of the cup. This cup may be secured to a support 20 by straps 22 bent to fit the cup and secured at their ends to the support 28 by screws 24.
Inside the cup H) is arranged a rotary cup 25 having an end wall 28 terminating in a flange 3E] engageable with the flange it, the end 32 of the wall 34 terminating in slightly spaced relationship with the wall 12. An annular flange 36 is formed on the wall 36 and has bearing engagement with the inner face of the wall l8. The wall 34 is also provided with an annular shoulder 38 having bearing engagement with the inner face of the wall i8. Thus the rotary cup 26 may be rotated relatively to the cup iii, and the wall 34 is supported concentrically of the inner face of the Wall l8 and in slightly spaced relationship therewith.
Two ribs iil are provided on the exterior face of the wall 36. These ribs extend longitudinally of the cup 25. Figure 5 illustrates a conventional razor blade 42 of the double edged type as being mounted on one of the ribs 40. Projections 44 are also provided on the exterior face of the wall 34 to support blades ofthe single edged type or blades having perforations therein.
In operation, one or more razor blades are mounted on the wall 34 and the cup 26 inserted in the cup H), which brings the blades to flexed positions between the walls l8 and 34, with the edges of the blades engaging the Wall l8 to be sharpened thereby when the cup 26 is oscillated inside the cup ii). To facilitate such oscillation, knobs 46 are attached to the wall 28 and constitute convenient grips. Water may be supplied to the space between the Walls 18 and 34. Notches 48 are provided in the flange 36 through which water may flow.
Without further elaboration, the foregoin will so fully explain my invention, that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service.
I claim:
1. A razor blade sharpener comprising a first glass cup having an inner sharpening face, a second glass cup rotatably guided inside said first cup, projection means on said second cup for keying razor blades thereto and rotate the latter relatively to the first cup through rotation of the second cup, said second cup being of smaller diameter than said first cup to provide a space between the two cups but of such size as to bend the blades and hold their cutting edges in pressure engagement with said sharpening face, said second cup being provided with a flange and a shoulder guidingly engaging the inner face .of said first cup, said flange being provided with openings for the passage of a liquid, and a knob means on said second cup to rotate the latter relatively to said first cup.
2. A-razor blade sharpener comprising a first glass cup having an inner sharpening face, a second glass cup rotatably guided inside said first cup, projection means on said second cup for keying razor blades thereto and rotate the latter relatively to the first cup through rotation of the second cup, said second cup being of smaller diameter than said first cup to provide a space between the two cups but of such size as to bend the blades and hold their cutting edges in pressure engagement with said sharpening face, said first cup being provided with flanges at its ends, and strap means extending about said first cup adjacent said flanges to secure the first cup to a support.
