BINDING DEVICE FOR MAKING GARLANDS AND THE LIKE Filed Oct. 25, 1942 IN V EN TOR. a/oH/v f6 N/EL @gmx ,4 TTaR/VE Y Patented Feb. 29, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BINDING DEVICE FOR MAKING GARLANDS AND THE LIKE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to binding devices and the like and more particularly to a mechanism for making garlands and wreaths.
In making wreaths or garlands or similar floral decorations, the component owers, leaves and plants are usually tied or fastened to a core wire by a binding wire which is fed from a spool and wrapped about the floral decorations and the core wire. This operation requires the use of both hands, one hand to handle the spool on one side of the core wire and the other hand to catch it on the other side, and generally calls for a second person to hold the decorative material against the core wire.
One of the objects of the present invention, therefore, is to provide an improved and simplined apparatus by means of which the binding operation may be done mechanically with great speed and comparatively slight effort by one person.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for mechanically wrapping the binding wire about the core wire and tie the oral decorations thereto without interference from the core Wire.
Still a further object is to provide a portable apparatus of the type indicated through which the core wire can be pulled as the binding operation proceeds and which is supported thereby.
Other objects and advantages inherent in the invention will become apparent from the following specification taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing which disclose by way of example an embodiment of the invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a binding device according to the invention shown in operative position.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the device shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section taken along the line 3 3 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a section taken along the line 4--4 of Figure 2.
Throughout the drawing the same reference characters serve to indicate the same or analogous parts.
Referring in greater detail tothe drawing, the device comprises a. sleeve Ill havingv a bracket II which terminates in a pair of clamping jaws for engaging a work table I2. Thus the device may be rmly attached to the work table by turning the clamping bolt I3.
The hollow shaft III is journalled within the sleeve ID and preferably has a short extension I5. The shaft I4 is held against longitudinal movement within the sleeve by the hub I6 and by the pinion II, which is keyed to the shaft.
The pinion II meshes with the gear wheel I8 which is journalled in the extension I9 of the bracket II. The gear wheel I8 is rotated by the handle 20.
The saddle member 2| is spaced from the extension I5 by the hollow rod 22 in order to provide a working space for the binding operation. It will of course be understood that the rod 23 and the shaft III can be connected in other ways without departing from the invention.
The core wire 28 is extended through the hollow shaft I4, the opening 29 and across the saddle member 2|. The core wire may be held in stretched condition by any suitable means.
The device operates as follows: The decorative material such as leaves, branches and flowers are placed on the saddle member 2|, the binding wire 23 pulled through the mouth 25 and tied or otherwise fastened to the bunch of foilage 30 by cranking the gear wheel I8 with one hand while holding the foilage stationary with the other hand, the shaft I4, extension I5r rod 22 and the saddle member 2| are rotated about the core wire which wraps the binding wire 23 about the bunch of foilage. After one bunch has been bound to the core wire, the latter is pulled through the shaft I4 and extension I5 a sufficient distance to permit the next succeeding bunch to be placed in the saddle 2| preliminary to the binding operation.
It will be understood that the foregoing description has been given by way of example and not by way of limitation. The invention may lend itself to a variety of expressions within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A binding device for tying decorative material to a core wire to form wreaths and garlands, comprising a sleeve for attachment to a-support, an elongated tubular member journaled at one end in said sleeve for extending the core wire therethrough, a binding station for supporting the decorative material carried by the other end of said tubular member and rotatable therewith, said tubular member being bent along a portion thereof and provided with an opening at the bend for the core wire whereby said bent portion will be free to rotate about the core wire, a wire bearing spool carried by said tubular member, the wire from said spool extending through the bent portion of said tubular member and emerging at said binding station, and means for rotating said tubular member.
