N. PETERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAFH UNTTEn STATES PATENT OEETC ALONZO MOORE, OF BANGKOK, SIAM.
FURNACE FOR BURNING CHAFF, 86C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,318, dated November 9, 1880.
Application filed May 31, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALoNzo MOORE, of Bangkok, Siam, have invented new and usefnl Improvements in Furnaces for Burning Ghalf or Husks from Grain, Sawdust, Oornstalks or Pods, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a boiler and furnace embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section viewed from the front. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section viewed from the rear.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In ordinary furnaces fuel is usually supplied at intervals, which chokes to a considerable extentthe evolution ofgases from the combustion. In so supplying the fuel the boilers are eX- posed to sudden changes of temperature, cansin g injurious expansions and contractions. To overcome these'objections is the object of my improvements.
The fuel of chaff or the like is fed into the hopper 10, from which it falls down the inclined throat 1; onto the inclined grate 4, set in a frame, A, so that the admission of air can be regulated at will. There are openings 1 l at each side of the lire-space directly through the brick-work for the admission ofair. There are also openings 2 2, leading up through the side walls into a pipe, 3, on top of the thebridge 0. The pipe is perforated on the side farthest from the tire to supply hot air behind the bridge. Perforated brick-work may be used instead of the pipe. The openings have regulating-plates to control the supply of air.
The rate at which the fuel falls down over the inclined grate and is consumed depends upon the amount of ashes regularlywithdrawn at the foot of the grate. To make this a con- (No model.)
tinuous operation the iron rollers e f and iron carrier 6 are put in motion by a belt and two cone-pulleys, so that the speed can be regulated at will. One end of the carrier is immersed in water in the tank 7 to keep it cool.
When the door t' of the pit is open the ashes will fall on the carrier and be continuously removed. Should the carrier get out of order the door of the pit can be closed, the lower bar, 12, of the grate removed, and the ashes be taken out through the opening by hand with a scraper.
The construction may be varied somewhat without departing from my invention. By these means, for a constant supply of fuel and a constant removal of the ashes Without exposing the boilers to sudden changes of temperature, cheap fuel that is ordinarily wasted as chaff, sawdust, and the like-can be used for generating steam in a very rapid and steady manner.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with the hopper and inclined grate, of the rollers of, door 2', and carrier 6, as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, in a furnace, of ash-pit i, endless apron 6, and tank 7, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a furnace, of an inclined throat, an inclined grate, a ventilated fire-space, an ash-pit, and an endless carrier, substantially as described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 8th day of January, 1880.
ALONZO MOORE.
