Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1920.
Application filed November 12, 1918. Serial No. 262,167.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR J. PELTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ilion, in the county of I-Ierkimer and State of New York, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a novel construction of heater, and the principal object of the invention is to provide means for facilitating the combustion of the fuel so as to secure the maximum degree of heat from the minimum amount of fuel.
In carrying out my invention I provide means for delivering a supply of heated air both below and above the fuel in the fire pot, thus increasing the combustion of the fuel and the products of combustion above the fuel.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional view showing my improvement applied to a kitchen range.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the air heating drum used in this form of the invention.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fi 1.
Iteferring to the drawings, 1 indicates a kitchen range, which may be of any desired type, and comprises the ash-pit 2, the fire pct 33, separated from the ash-pit by the grate-bars 4, and the stove pipe 5. In carrying out my invention, in this style of stove, I place a drum 6 on the rear part of the stove, at one side of the stove pipe. The drum is provided with a concave recess 7, which receives a part of the stove pipe so that the drum will be heated from the heat of the products of. combustion passing up the stove pipe. The drum will also be heated by the heat from the stove itself. As will be seen,
the drum is so arranged on the stove that a part of its bottom projects beyond the rear edge of the stove, and thisprojecting part has an opening 8 therein, which serves as an inlet for air passing into the drum. The upper part of the drum is provided with a pair of openings 9 and 10, the opening 9 being larger than the opening 10. A large pipe 11 has its upper bent end engaging the opening 9, and this pipe extends downwardly in rear of the stove and has its lower end bent and passing into the ash-pit of the stove, below the grate-bars 4;. This end passes through a hole 12 formed in the rear of the stove, and the pipe extends to about the center of the ash-pit, so that the air will be delivered at a point beneath the grate, thus causing the air to pass through the entire bed of fuel on the bars. A smaller pipe 13 has its upper end engaging the hole 10 in the drum and its lower end passing through a hole 14: in the rear of the stove and into the fire-pot above the fuel on the grate-bars. I prefer to arrange the outlet of this pipe centrally of the fire-pot, so that the air will thoroughly mix with the products of combustion generated from the fuel, thus facilitating theircombustion. I prefer to make the pipe 13 a third smaller than the pipe 11, as I find I secure better results thereby, but I do not wish to be limited in this respect.
In the operation of my invention, after the fire has gotten a start, all the draft doors of the stove are closed so that the heat from the stove pipe will cause air to flow into the drum, where it will be heated, and
from this drum, the heated air will pass through pipe 11 into the ash-pit and up through the fuel on the fire-bars, and through the pipe 13 into the stove above the fuel where it will mix with the gases created by the burning fuel. Thus the combustion of the fuel will be greatly facilitated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is The combination with a stove and its fire pot and a stove pipe at the rear connected with the combustion chamber, of a heating drum mounted on the top of the stove at its rear and adjacent to the stove pipe and projecting over the edge of the stove top and having an air inlet opening in its bottom and 2Ld12t061li3 to said edge, and a recess in one side fitting against the stove pipe, and
a pair of pipes extending outside of the stove, and connected attheir upper end to the heating drum, the lower end of one of said pipes projecting and discharging into the ash pit, and the lower end of theother pipe projecting and discharging into the fire pot, whereby heated air is fed beneath 10
