1 Claim.
This invention relates to a carton of the kind typied by the ordinary match box but which, according to the present invention, is provided with means for positioning the Carton upright, arranging a dispensing opening at the bottom of the positioned carton and for precluding spilling out of the dispensed articles, such as matches, from the dispensing aperture.
An object of the invention is to prom'de a device of this kind in which no eXtra material is required in the manufacture of the carton beyond` what is now commonly used in boxes of this kind.
Another object is to provide a carton in which the additional manufacturing steps are negligible over those required in producing the carton proper.
Another object is the provision of such a device in which the parts are adapted to be conditioned by the user for placing the carton in dispensing position.
These and other objects are attained by the means described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the carton of this invention in partially open position and prior to conditioning thereof for dispensing of matches, shown by way of example, in the body of the boX.
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the bottom of the slide cover of the carton of this invention.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of a portion of the carton body or containing element.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the retaining strip forming a part of the device of the invention after the strip has been conditioned to cooperate as a part of the dispensing carton.
Fig. 5 is a front elevational view of the carton of this invention shown in operative dispensing position and with matches shown as the items to be dispensed.
Fig. 6 is 'a side view of the bottom portions of the dispensing carton in operative position with the adjacent portions of the side wall of the cover broken away.
Fig. 7 is a rear elevational View of the dispensing carton in operative position.
In greater detail and with reference to the drawings:
The device of this invention .comprises a carton body l0 of the open top variety formed to provide a base Il, side walls I2 and end Walls I3. This body is adapted to be embraced and covered by a cover I 4 of the slide type and formed with a bottom I5, top I6 and side walls I'I and I8.
The base Il of the carton body IIJ may be provided with a, V-shaped cut (Fig. 3) to eiect the formation of a, tab I9. The bottom 'l5 of the cover (Fig. 2) is provided with a short transverse cut 20 adapted to receive the tab I9 for limiting `movement of the body I Il out of, that is, downwardly of the cover I4, when the carton is in upright position, whereby a dispensing opening is provided at the bottom. For hanging the carton, the bottom I5 of the cover may be perforatedv as at 2l (Fig. 2) and the perforation strengthened, if desired, by a suitable eyelet 22. be noted in Fig. '7 that this hang-up perforation is above the upper end of the carton body, when the carton is operatively positioned, so that there is no interference by the carton with the nail or other projecting member upon which the carton is hung. v
The top I6 of the slide cover is provided with a pair of weakened or score lines 23 defining a removable section 24 which, when removed, provides a linger aperture facilitating the removal of the items to be dispensed from the carton.
A retaining strip 25 forms a part of the present invention. Such a strip is normally used in the ordinary match box or similar container for holding the contained articles in proper place and to preclude spilling of the same, especially upon opening of the carton. The strip 25 of this invention serves this function in the usual way, for which purpose the ends of said strip are bent downwardly as at 26 (Figs. 1 and 4) and inserted between the packed articles and the adjacent ends I3 of the carton body.
The strip 25 inwardly of the fold lines 26 is further scored transversely, as at 21., and, as seen in Fig. 1, is marked with cut-indicating lines 28 (Fig. 1) in the two sections of the strip between the pairs of score lines 26 and 21. The original retaining strip 25 likewise has the two corners thereof on one side of the strip lined as at 29 (Fig. l) to indicate that these corners of the strip are to be cut 01T. It will be understood that suitable directions will be printed upon the carton for carrying out the operations entailed in conditioning the carton for use as -a dispensing container.
When the device is to be so conditioned, the user first opens the box and takes out the retainin-g strip 25. The iinger aperture section 24 of the cover top may then -be pushed or cut out and thereafter the tab I9 on the base of the carton body may be inserted through the slot 20 of the cover bottom as shown in Fig. '7 Whereby a dispensing opening is provided at the bottom of the carton when the latter is positioned upright.
It willy The removed retaining strip 25 is now out, as indicated in Fig. 4, that is to say, cuts 30 are formed along the lines 28 and the two corners of the strip at one side are cut ol, as indicated by the lines 29, to form abutment edges 3|. The strip is now bent along the two lines 21 and the bent end portions are inserted between the side Walls of the carton body and its cover, at the bottom of the upright carton.
It will be seen in Fig. 6 that the abutment edges 3l of the retaining strip 25, when the ends of the latter are inserted as described, lie against the bottom I8 of the slide cover and likewise determine the angle at which the remainder of the strip is disposed. At the time the said strip ends are so inserted, the cuts 30 of the strip and the adjacent edge portions of the cover top I6 are brought together, that is to say, the latter are inserted into the cuts in the manner seen in Fig. 6 for further holdin-g the retaining strip 25 in position.
The forward portions of the retaining strip are by such positioning made to extend upwardly and outwardly of the front of the dispensing aperture to form a projecting lip which precludes spilling of the matches or other items in the carton to be dispensed. Inasmuch as the bottom end of the carton body lll, as seen in Fig. 6, has its front edge in contact upon the strip 25, there is no Opening left along this area which would permit leakage or spilling of the contained items rearwardly of the carton. And at the sides of the dispensing aperture, the portions of the strip 25 adjacent the cuts 3B effectively preclude sideward spilling.
It is apparent that the retaining strip may be attached in place by any other suitable means,
such as by glueing or stapling or by forms of slotted connections other than that shown.
The device of this invention, when utilized as a match box, is preferably formed of non-infiammable material. The carton may be prepared for dispensing in a few moments and, due to the close tting of parts in the dispensing position, will perform the dispensing function during any reasonable period of use of the device.
Modications will suggest themselves upon consideration of the means here disclosed but these are believed to be comprised within the spirit and scope of the invention.
What is claimed is:
A dispensing carton comprising an open-top body formed with base, side and end Walls, a slide cover for said body and formed with bottom, top and side walls, means for hanging the joined body and cover upright and for limiting movement of the body out of the cover a predetermined distance to provide -a dispensing opening, and a retaining strip adapted, when the carton is in dispensing position, to be disposed along and to project above the lower front edge of said body with the end portions of said strip bent and inserted between the side walls of said body and cover for holding the retaining strip in place, said inserted end portions each having its rear corner out oi to provide 4an abutment edge disposed against the cover bottom, said abutment edges holding said strip at such angle that the strip forms an upwardlyand outwardly projecting lip at the front of said dispensing opening, said strip, at the sides of said opening, being slotted or cut for receiving the lower edge portions of said cover top.
