A This invention is directed in general to a portable wheel-supported hoist-of heavy duty type. and 1n particular the invention provides anauxili'ary hoist for usein connection with a mobile elevator or utility truck, as shown for example in us. Letters e t tfigcjzgz'zaacz, issued April U 14 1942. v V a v The main purpose of the present invention is 6 Claims. (Cl. 214-65) indicate corresponding parts in the several views:
auxiliary-hoist as arranged in connection with to" provide a heavy duty portable hoist which comprises the combination 'of the upstandin wheel-supported elevator frame assembly of the mobile elevator shown inthe aboveidentified patent, and a separate upstanding wheel-supported hoist frame assembly detachably and swivelly connected to said elevator frame assembly intrailing relation. 1
A further object'of'this invention isflto 'provide a hoist as in the preceding paragraph in whichsaid hoist frame assembly includes a hori zontal top beam disposed a substantial distance above the ground,,sald beam being rigidly secured to and projecting forwardly from an up- Figure I is aside elevation illustrating the the mobile elevator.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary transverse sectional elevation on line 2-2 of Fig; 1, looking forward.
Figure 3'is a transverse sectional elevation on line 3-3 of Fig. 1,,looking to the rear. Referring now'moreparticularly to "the characters of reference on the drawings, the auxiliary hoist is designed for detachable connection with the mobile elevator shown in United States Leti ters Patent no; 2,279,832.; which includes an standing portion of said" hoist frame assembly,
and being pivoted at its forward end on the elevator frame assembly for relative horizontal swinging movement; there being a cable actuits engine.
An additional object of this invention is to hoistwhich comprises a, pair of longitudinally spaced, upstanding and relatively tall frame asf semblies, a horizontal top beam, extending between said frame assembliessaid top beamibeing ated hoist unit depending from said top beam intermediate its ends, the pull cable for said hoist unit being connected with a power" winch mounted on the mobile elevator and driven from upstanding elevator frame assembly indicated Y generally at I, said assembly-being supported at its lower end by transverselyspaced ground engaging wheels 2. As in the identified patent,
the elevator frame assembly is connected in trailing relation with a two-wheel tractor 3 by La vertically rigidhorizontally swiveling draft connection indicated generally at 4. i
The tractor 3 includes a two-drum power winch 5 mounted on and projecting rearwardly therefrom; said power winch being of'a type commonly employed on tractors. A cable 6 is connected at one end with one drum of the power winch 5 and leads therefrom to the elevator frame assembly,
where it is connected with suitable means to effect raising and lowering of a vertically movable elevator frame 1 upon rotation of thedrum'in one direction or the other. vWhen not in use with the I hereinafter described. auxiliary hoist, the ele- 1 provide a heavy-duty high clearance portable rigidly secured tonne of said assemblies and .pivotally secured to the other thereof for rela tive horizontal swinging movement, and acable actuated hoist unit depending from the top beam intermediate its ends; said other frame assembly vator frame I is moved up anddown through the medium of cable 6 to raise or lower a load carried upon load supporting arms ll which project rearwardly from the T lower end of the elevator frame I. I
The above structural details of the mobile elevator are described in detail in the identified isbeing arranged in draft connection with a tractor v which includes a power winch, thepull cable of the hoist unit beingoperativelyconnected to said winch. v i
A further object of the, invention is to .produce a simple ,andinexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the-purpose for which it is desi ned. v
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.v
In the drawings similar characters of reference sued patent. i
, The auxiliary hoist which is adapted for detachable connection with the mobile elevator comprises the following: v I
A horizontal longitudinally extending top beam 9 is fixed at its rear end in connection with an upstanding, A-frame H), the legs of which are disposed in transversely spaced relation. This A- frame is supported by transversely spaced ground engaging wheels ll rctatably mounted'ou the lower ends of the legs of said frame.
- At its forward end the top beam 9 is pivotally connected,.for relative horizontal swinging movement, with a horizontal transversely extending cross beam I2 which'theelevator frame I includes at the top. The pivotal connection between the forward end of the top beam 9 and cross beam I 2 comprises a vertical pin i3 fixed on and upstanding from an attachment plate i4 secured to the cross beam 82 centrally of its ends.
ent embodiment is approximately sixteen feet.
To engage the pin l3 in the bushing IS, the elevator frame I is run upwardly to the necessary I extent by means of the cable 6, and is thereafter held in such position by suitably braking the corresponding drum of the power winch 5. Also, when the elevator frame I is thus raised, the load supporting arms 8 are disposed a substantial distance above the ground and are clear of the load which'the auxiliary hoist is to lift.
The lifting mechanism of the auxiliary hoist comprises a multiple sheave block and tackle unit IS, the upper block of which is secured to and depends from the horizontal top beam 9 substantially centrally of its ends; the lower block I! of the block and tackle unit l8 including a downwardly projecting lifting hook I 8.
A direction changing sheave i3 is mounted on the top beam 3 adjacent the upper block 20 of the block and tackle unit I6, and the pull lead 2| of said block and tackle unit extends therefrom over sheave l9 and thence about direction changing sheaves 22 and 23 secured, respectively, on the forward end of top beam 9 adjacent pin l3, and on the draft connection 4 above the winch and adjacent the vertical axis of said connection. From the sheave 23 the pull lead 2| is connected with the other drum 24 of 'the power winch 5. As is apparent, rotation of drum 24 in one di-* rection or the other will eflect raising or lowering of the lower block l1 and hook l8 of the block and tackle unit l6.
Inuse, the tractor 3 is maneuvered until the load to be lifted is straddled by the frame structure which includes elevator frame assembly I, frame assembly I, and horizontal top beam 9, and which forms in, effect a rectangular arch. Thereafter the hook I8 is suitably connected with the load to be lifted, and the drum 24 of the I power winch rotated in a direction to raise block I! and hook it. When the load has been lifted to a position clear of the ground and drum 24 is braked and the tractor 3 is then in motion, the hoist structure and the lifted load trails thereafter.
By reason of the pivotal connection between the top beam 9 and elevator frame I, the tractor is steerable relative to the hoist frame assembly, and particularly the rear wheels II. This is a desirable feature, as it facilitates loading, transporting, and unloading of the object to be lifted.
The structure is such that objects of great size and weight can be successfully transported from place to place, and particularly objects which have an odd configuration, and which cannot readily be moved by conventional portable hoist structures, or which by their weight would tend to'over-balance such structures.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device,
still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what-I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
