Railway car framing varies considerably for each car, depending upon the particular type and Y floor plan arrangement of the car. The locations of the framing members for the car structure, their sizes and shape, all depend to a large extent upon the nature of the car under construction.
Heretofore, the car side frames have been partially constructed upon Work holding jigs of various types, all of which have required considerable time and expense to adapt them to the particular side frame to be constructed. The preparation of the jig has been one of the time consuming items which has impeded progress in the car building industry and has hindered attempts to employ large scale productiony methods.
The public isv rapidly being schooled in large scale production methods, and it has come to eX- pect a job to be completed in a very small fraction of the time v*formerly required. When a railroad company places an order for cars, one of its rst requirements is that the order shall be lled by a specific date, and in most instances the time allotted the icar builder to complete the order is very limited. VThe railroads are becoming more and more insistent in their demands for prompter delivery of cars, and the carbuilder necessitating considerable ,time and labor to prepare the various work holding devices for handling the specific job. The jigs have had to be practically torn down4 and vrebuilt to accommodate them for a specific car or cars to be constructed,`and, when the order is completed, the task of .adapting the jigs for the lnext lot of cars has required considerable time and labor.
The present invention deals with ajiggfor supporting the various framing members making up a car side frame whiley they are assembled and welded together.

- The camber which is built in thecar depends uponthe length and height of the car and the materials used in its construction, so that'a` side must be hurdled by the car builder. Due to the high degree of competition between ear builders and to general business conditions today limiting the budgets of the railroad companies, car builders are required to figure the cost of new cars very closely and to make their margin of profit relatively small. The handling of the bulky materials and construction parts has always been a considerable problem and one which has involved innumerable time-consuming operations. Since there 'are no standard models for railroad cars, as there are, forl instance,y inV automobiles, each 4 job when it presents itself to the shop department has been treated as an entirely new one bers during the welding operation.
frame jig, in order to be suitable for side frames vof all types and designs oi passenger cars, must be provided with means for adjusting the camber to be placed in the car side frame., YThis is readily accomplished bymeans of a lcamber adjusting member, which is Very easily and quickly adjusted tosuit the requirements of the specific car under construction. This camber member automatically places the proper camber in the car side frame. After this camber adjusting member has oncebeen properly set, no further attention need be given the question of camber, and the car side frame, when it is completely fabricated, is provided with its proper camber.
Very efficient and easily handled work holding clamps are employed to hold the various car side framing members in place on thev jig', and they are so arranged that interference with the welding operation is reduced to a minimum.

The camber angle 32 is adjusted with a cambe corresponding to that desired in the car side -frame. The degree of this camber will depend upon the length and weight of the car to be constructed and the characteristics of the materials used in the framing members. When the camber angle has been properly cambered with the shims in place, studs 33 are tightened.
The post backing members 34 are suspended on the jig support 25 by means of rollers 52 (Figs. 1, 10, and 11) riding along the top edge of the camber angle 32. Thus the position of the post backing'member 56.

Below the side plate support 11 on theside post backing member 56 is awindow header support 85, comprising outwardly projecting parallel arms 85" and `81 bending inwardly at their rear ends, and terminating in flanges 88 paralleling the arms 85 and 81. Each of the flanges 88 is provided with -an inwardly extending projection 89 forming a vguide member tting into the slot or guideway 10in plate 59. Further down the post is a sash rest support 98 operating in the cut out portion 88 of the web 58 and comprising outwardly extending parallel arms 9| and 92 bending inwardly at their rear ends and terminating in anges 93 paralleling the arms 9| and 92. Each of these flanges 93 is provided with a projection or guide member 94 adapted to ride in the slot or guideway 12 of plate 1|, so that the sash rest support 90 is movable vertically on the plate 'H in guideway 12.

U-shaped clamps |55 are used to secure together the -longitudinal and vertical framing members rmaking up the car side frame. Each clamp has :arms and |52, on the inner face of the former of which is a projection |53, and on the latter of which is a slot |55 having sides |55 and |51 which project inwardly into the .slot |55. The free end of arm |5| of the clamp "tapers at |54 to provide clearance.
.A tapered pin |58 (Fig. 5) is used in conjunction with the U-shaped clamp |53 and with the upper and lower clamps and |23 on the side :post backing member 55. This pin comprises flanges |53 and |55 substantially at right angles to each other, connected by a web |5|. The web 15| tapers along its top edge downwardlyfrom the ange |55 onto the free end of flange |59.
End post backing member Traveling crane 'The traveling crane 35 directlyrabove thev jig is adapted to move throughout the entire length of. the jig. Extending upwardly from the H posts 25 (Fig. 1) are members |53 forming the ver tical supports for tracks 35 and 31 between which the crane travels. Referring to Fig. 3, a chan- 'nel bar |52 extends lengthwise to the jig frame 25 between the vertical members |53 adjacent to the upper ends thereof. Track 35 is secured tothe channel member |54. Extending lengthwise to the jig frame 25 adjacent to the upper end of posts 25 is an angle bar |55 upon which the lower track 31 is mounted.
The crane 35 is mounted on a frame, gen
erally indicated at (Figs. 1 and 3), having upper and lower horizontal framing members |51 and |58, respectively, connected by vertical mem bers |59 and |10. Wheels |1| are mounted on the frame |55 along the top of member |51 and the bottom of member |58 of the frame. Extending outwardly from the frame |55 directly be- ,low the upper member |51 is a horizontal track |12 extending transversely to the welding jig.
A supporting frame |13 having wheels |14 rides `along this track |12 in a direction at right angles ito the length of the jig, and the lifting mecha- :nism |15 of the crane 35 is hooked onto the ,frame |13 at |15. A hook |11 extends down bellow the lifting mechanism |14.
Operation of iig requirements of the car side to be constructed..
the rst operation is to adjust the distances be.- tween the stops or spacers |31 and |35 on the upper and lower longitudinal members 28 and 29, respectively. The distances between these members initially is greater than that corresponding to the length of the car side frame ,under construction to make allowance for the shrinkcause of the shrinkage which occurs, the longitudinal framing members are initially longer than the completed car side frame. Next, the camber angle 32 is adjusted with a camber to correspond to that desired in the car side. The end post backing members 51 are properly placed against their corresponding stops |31 and |38.
The side and end post backing members 55 and plied to each post backing member as it is moved into place and, as best shown in Fig. 10,'these clamps |43 securely lock the post backingmem, ber in place against the longitudinal members 3| of the jig support.
Because the post backing members are sus;v
pended from the camber angle 32, their relative heights with respect to each other are determined by the positions of the camber'angle 32 at the locations where the backing members are suspended. Thus, the initial adjustment of the camber in the camber angle determines the relative heights of the post backing members, there. y

In the case of the side post, it is applied to the side post backing member 55 with the web |19 of the post extending along one side of web 5B of the post backing member 5B and the flange extending across the front face of the enlarged portions of the web 58 of the backing member and bending inwardlyv along the opposite l side face of web 58.
When the post is applied to the backing member, the gauges |3| are moved. forwardly in the position shown in solid -linesin Fig. 13, so as to ll in the gaps on each side of the web 58 between the web and the side'posts. These gauges are provided to make allowance for the contraction which. takes place after-the welding operationv has been completed, and, when the post is firstU mounted on the backing member, these gauges are used to properly locate the post, but, before the welding operation has been performed, the gauges are withdrawn to their dotted line posi-A l tion |35 (Fig. 13), so that the side frame. is free to contract during the cooling period. In a'work holding jig of the class'described, a vertical support, a vertical post backing member movably mounted on said support adapted to hold the work, and means on the backing member for holdingthe work against said member including a clamp having, when in its operative position, a horizontal varm extending youtwardly beyond the front facef of the backing member and a'downwardly extending vertical arm at the outer end of the horizontal arm, means at the free end of the horizontalarm ofthe clamp for pivotally mounting the clamp 'on the backing member adjacent to the top thereof, the clamp being movable laterally between a locking position and a free position and when in its free position being adapted to 'be pivoted to substantially a'vertical position to extend above the backing member, a tightening screw at the free end of the clamping member adapted to engage the work when it is in place on the backingmember and the clamp is in locking position, land means on the backingmember for engaging beneath one of said arms for holding the clamp in its operative position only when the lclamp is dispo-sed in its locking position,` thecl'afmp` disengaging said holding means when the clampis moved laterally to its free position.

In a work holding jig of the class described, a vertical post backing member adapted to hold the work, and means on the backing member for holding the work against said member including a clamp having, when in its operative position, a horizontal arm extending outwardly beyond the front face of the backing member and a downwardly extending vertical arm at the outer end of the horizontal arm, means at the free end of the horizontalarm of the clamp for pivotally mounting the clamp on the backing member adjacent to the top thereof, the clamp being movable laterally between a locking position and a free position and when in its free position being adapted to be pivoted to substantially a vertical position to extend above the backing member, a tightening screw at the free end of the clamping member adapted to engage the work when it is in place on the backing member and the clamp is in locking position, and xed means on the backing member adapted to be engaged by the clamping member to hold the clamp in its operative position only when the clamp is disposed in its locking position, the clamp disengaging said holding means when the clamp is moved laterally to its free position and clamping means adjacent to the bottom of the backing member for holding the work adjacent to the bottom thereof to the backing member 8. A vertical work holding jig for use in the construction of a vehicle side frame comprising a vertical support substantially coextensive with the length of the side frame, a camber adjusting member disposed longitudinally of and secured to 'the support and extending substantially throughout the full length ofthe support, means for adjusting the camber in said membenzat least three side post backing members spaced length- Wise along the support, means for supporting the backing members on the camber member, the proper relative vertical displacement between the post backing members to produce the-desired camber in the Vehicle side frame beingprovided by the camber adjusting member, the post backing members being movable lengthwise of the yjig along the camber adjusting member, and means on the post backing members for holding longitudinal vehicle side frame members in proper spaced relationship. f

A vertical work holding jig for use :in the construction ofva vehicle side frame comprising a vertical support substantially ooextensive Awith the length of the side frame, a camber adjusting member disposed longitudinally of and secured tov the support and extending substantially throughout the full length of the support, means for adjusting the camber in said member, at least three side post backing members spaced lengthwise along the support, means for supporting` the backing members on the camber member; the proper relative Vertical displacement between-the post backing members to produce the desired camber in the vehicle side frame being provided by the camber adjusting member, the post backing members being movable lengthwise of the Yjig along the camber adjusting member, and adjustable supporting means on each backing member for holding vertical and longitudinal framing members for the vehicle side in proper spaced relationship, the supporting meansbeing movable vertically on the side post backing members.v i '10. A Vertical work holding jig for use inA the construction of a vehicle side frame comprising a vertically disposed support at least coextensive with the length of the side frame, a horizontal rail member on the support substantially coextensive with the length of the side frame, means for regulating the camber in the rail, at least three side post backing members supported on the rail member, roller means on each post backing member for supporting the backing member on the rail so that each backing member can be moved readily along the rail, means cooperating with each backing member for locking the backing member in a selected position on the rail, and means on each side post backing member for holding the vertical and longitudinal vehicle side framing members in proper spaced relation, the corresponding last named means on each post backing member being adapted to be spaced a uniform distance from the camber adjusting member.

A vertical work holding jig for use in the construction of a vehicleside frame having vertical and horizontal members, said jig comprising a vertical support at least coextensive with the length of the side frame, a camber adjusting member on the support extending lengthwise of the jig and being substantially coextensive with the length of the side frame, means for regulating the camber in the camber adjusting member, at least three .vertical side post backing members spaced lengthwise along the support, a roller for supporting each backing member on the camber adjusting member, the properrelative vertical displacement between the post backing members to maintain the desired camber in the vehicle side frame being provided by the camber adjusting member,y eachy side-post backing ymember Abeing movable longitudinally'along'the camber adjusting member, .and lmeans von :each post backing member for holding longitudinal vehicle :side frame 'members lin proper spaced relationship, the correspondinglast named means on each post backing member being adapted .to be lspaced a uniform distance from the camber adjusting member.
