UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L. RITER, OF BROWNSVILLE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO SYLVESTER SOOFIELD AND JOHN L. GILOHRIST, OF OONNERSVILLE, INDIANA.
FEED FOR SEED-DRILLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,203, dated November 9, 1880.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. ErrER, of Brownsville, Union county, Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed for Seed-Drills, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the feed mechanism of seed-drills, in which a transverse tar with wings or gates operates in connection with the feed-wheel and feedcups; and the object of my invention is to provide a system of devices for regulating the amount of seed to be planted. This object I attain by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 represents a side view of any ordinary feed-cup, showing a combined long and short slot in the side. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the opposite side of the feed-cup, showing a single short slot in its upper edge. Fig. 3 is a top view of the feed -cup, showing the slots in both sides of the feed-cup. Fig. 4 is a view of the feed-cup attached to the hopper or feed-box of the planter, showing the ar- 2 5 rangements of parts as combined.
Like letters refer to like parts throughout the various views.
A and A represent the two sides of an ordinary feed-cup provided with a feed-wheel,
0 D, and operating-rod O, all in the usual manner.
The side A of the cup is provided with a long slot, F, extending from the top to the bottom of the cup in front of the feed-wheel D. The upper part of this slot F is enlarged. at G.
5 The other side, A, has a short slot, H, in line with the enlarged part G of the slot F.
In the slots H and F the slide-barVoperates.
On the slide-bar V are attached wings or gates w, which operate in the slot F of each cup. This rod or bar V is operated by the lever P and bracket B. One end of this bracket It is attached to the bar V and the opposite end of the lever P.
The lever P is pivoted to the feed-box K at O, and its upper end is pointed to indicate on 5 the indicator L the distance that the wings W W are moved inside of the feed-cup.
In the position shown in Fig. 4 the wings do not project inside of the cup to interfere with the full feed; but when the lever P is reversed from the position shown the wings \V W will be moved inward across the feed-cup, and prevent any grain from being fed to the discharge-spout B.
It is obvious from this arrangement that any quantity of grain desired may be fed from the feed-cup by exposing any section of the feed-wheel to the action of the grain, and that the quantity may be regulated at will by the lever P, rod V, and wings W W.
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a seed-drill, the cups provided with the slots F, G, and H, combined with a rod, V, having wings W W and a bracket, R, and 65 the lever-indicator P, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
That I claim the above as my invention, I hereunto set my hand this the 2d day of April, 1880.
JOHN L. RITER. Witnesses:
