Description
NITED STATES PATENT Fries.
YVASHINGTON IRVINE KNOX, OF TERRELL, TEXAS.
PLANTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 391,374, dated October 16, 1888.
Application filed April 3, 1888. Serial No. 269,513.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WAsnINeroN IRVINE KNOX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Terrell, in the county of Kaufman and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Planters, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in planters; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a planterembodying the invention. Fig. 2is a side view. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a plan with the hopper detached. Fig. 5 is a reversed plan of the same.
The machine can be adapted to plant either corn, beans and peas, or cotton seed and cane seed, by throwing out of gear certain points of the mechanism.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the rectangular main frame of the machine, provided with the side rails, to a, and having a suitable central longitudinal draw bar or tongue, (1 secured to two transverse rails, a a crossing its front portion.
13 isa furrow-opener having its shank-secured to the draw-bar, between the rails a and b b are similar coverers, having their shanks secured to the side rails, a a, in rear of the hopper.
G is the base or floorof the hopper, secured between the side rails, behind the rear rail, a and provided with two rectangular dischargeopenings, 0 0, respectively. The hopper D, of ordinary form, rises from said base and has journaled in its side a transverse shaft, (1, provided with the feeder-arms or agitators d, at suitable distances apart, and having on its extended journal on the side of the rail to the pulley (1 d is a suitable brush or striker secured at a proper point to the inner surface of the front of the hopper.
E is the conveyer-wheel, having its shaft journaled in the side rails of the main frame at a suitable distance from the rear end thereof, and e is a pulley on the shaft of the said wheel adjoining the side rail, a, and connected with the pulley d" by the belt 6. If desired,
(No model.)
a chain and sprocket wheels may be substituted for the said belt and pulleys. To the side of the conveyor-wheel, opposite the pulley e, are secured the laterally-projecting arms 6 e which are equidistant and may be of any desired number.
F is a vibratory lever pivoted at one end on the side rail, a, extending across the main frame and having its other end passed through a limiting or stop bracket. f, secured to the side rail, a,and f is a coiled spring having one end attached to the end of said lever extended outward from the bracket, and the other end attached in rear of said end to the side rail, a. This spring acts to draw the lever rearward and the bracket limits its rearward motion.
G is a longitudinal reciprocating bar pivoted at its front end on the lever F, passed in rear thereof, through a guide and retainingbracket, secured to the side rail, (1, and having its rear end, 9, which is in the path of the arms 6 beveled upwardly and rearwardly, so that when said arms strike said end the bar G is moved forward and the adjoining end of the lever F is also moved forward.
H is a seed-slide having its rear end pivoted to the lever F and provided near its front end with the longitudinal sloth, which, when the slide is moved frontward by said lever,
registers with the opening a in the base of the hopper. Thesaidslidemovesinaguide-groovc, h. in the base of the hopper, the surface of which is flush therewith, and the slide has resting in asimilar but narrower guide-groove in its upper surface an adjusting-strip, I, the front portion of which can be made to more or less cover the slot h, so as to regulate the discharge by means of its longitudinal slot 1' and set-screw i, near its rear end, the screw engaging in atapped recess in the seed-slide. By means of the strip I and said screw the slot h can be completely closed.
J is a strip lying upon the base of the hopper and held in place by guide-bracketsj. The said strip lies over the opening 0 when in position, and has opposite and of equal size to said opening a notch, j, in one edge. When the strip J lies on one side, the said notch and opening register and discharge can take place; but when the strip is drawn out and has its sides reversed the notch lies on one side of the opening, which is then closed, the strip J be ing double the width of the opening 0 and the notch being half the width of the strip.
K K are handles secured to the side rails at suitable points and of ordinary construction.
When it is desired to plant corn, beans, or peas, the strip Jis made to close the opening a and the belt 0 is removed from the pulleys e and (1 The remaining mechanism then acts as described, the striker d wiping the super-' fiuous grain from the slot h, when it registers with the opening a; I
When it is desired to plant cotton or cane seed, the notchj and opening care made to register, the belt 0 is replaced, the slide I is caused to close the slot h, the coiled spring is detached from the lever F, and by means of said lever the bar G is moved Forward out of the path of the arms a".
Having described my invention, I claim In a planter, the combination of the hopper having the opening 0 in its base, the seed-slide- H, provided with the slot h, the strip I, hav ing the longitudinal adj usting-slot 2' and setscrew i, the pivoted vibrating lever F, the limiting-bracket f, the coiled spring f, the pivoted reciprocating bar G, moving in the bracket 9 and having the beveled rear end, 9, the conveyer-wheel, and the arms e standingfrom the side of the conveyer-whee] and actuating the bar G, substantially as specified. In testimony thatIclaim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
