BOOK-PRESS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,097, dated November 2, 1880,

Application filed August 26, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. WATERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange, in the county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Book-Presses, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to what are known as standing presses, and especially such as are used in pressing books, interposed. between press-boards, as, for example, for producing grooves or indentations at the junction of the back and sides of the book-cover.

Prior to my invention it was customary to build up the press-boards with the books between them on a chair, and then to lift or transfer the pile bodily into the press, the chair having two upright posts acting as gages to the corners of the boards, and causing the whole to register with each other. This method of pressing is objectionable, because of not only the manifestexertion attending the transfer of the pile from the chair to the press, but also the care required to prevent the boards from shifting during this operation.

My invention consists in the combination of corner gages with a press embodying upright posts for the attachment of such gages, so that the pile of superposed boards and books may he built up directly in the press. I make the corner gages of less length than the posts of the press, and attach the gages to the posts by means of movable clamps, so that the gages may be set according to the height of the pile built up in the press.

This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a horizontal section. Fig. 2 is aside elevation. Fig. 3 shows one of the corner gages detached.

two of the posts opposite to each other on one of such open sides. These gages D consist of strips of sheet metal or other suitable material, of angular cross-section, and they are fastened to the clamps E in a suitable manner, the clamps being constructed to engage the appropriate posts A. In this example the clamps E consist, respectively, of two arms or jaws, a b, (see Fig. 3,) which are hinged together, as at c, and are shaped to embrace the posts A, while they are held shut by means of a thumb-screw, d. The length of the corner gages, D, is less than that of the posts A, so that they are applicable to any ordinary press, irrespective of its height.

When the press is to be applied to use the clamps E are adjusted so as to bring the corner gages, l), to the lower part of the press, and to a proper position for receiving the corners of the press-boards F. The boards are then piled up with the books between them, in the usual manner, and when the whole reaches the height of the corner gages, D, the clamps E are moved upward on the posts A to bring the gages to an upper position and allow of adding to the pile. When the desired number of boards and books have been thus put in the press they are subjected to the required pressure.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a press embodying upright posts, of corner gages attached to the posts for the reception of hacking-boards, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with a press embodying upright posts and With corner gages having a less length than the posts, of movable clamps for attaching the gages to the posts, substantially as described.
