STOCKING AND THE METHOD OF MAKING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,074, dated November 2, 1880,

To all whom t't may concern:

Be it known that I, Bonner WALTER Scorr, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Socks 0r Stockings and in the Mode of Making Same, of which the following is a specification.

Myinvention relates to certain improvements in that class of stockings which are made from tubes of knitted fabric; and the object of my invention is to make a stocking which will be free at the toe and heel from abrupt and uncomfortable corners or projections.

In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views illustrating the preparation of the tube of knitted fabric for the formation of the heel; Fig. 3, a side view of the finished stocking, drawn to a larger scale than Figs. 1 and 2 5 Fig. 4, a view of the heel-strip; Fig. 5, a View showing the mode of applying the heel-strip to the tube; and Figs. 6, 7, and 8, perspective views, illustrating the method of forming the toe.

A tube, A, of knitted fabric, of which the sock or stocking is to be formed, is partly severed on the line a, Fig. 1, so that it can be bent to the shape shown in Fig. 2 preparatory to the formation of the heel.

The stitches on the edge I) of the severed tube being applied to the needles of a knittingmachine, a heel-strip, B, of the shape shown in Fig. 4, is knitted to the said edge I), as shown in Fig. 5. The strip B is of rectangular form, and has in the lower edge a recess, 6, so that when the strip is knitted to the tube A, as in Fig. 5, a projecting corner, f, is formed. This corner is folded on the diagonal line w, the edges g and h are united to the edges g and h, and the edge 1. to the edge 2', the formation of the heel being completed by uniting the edges m m of the strip B to the severed edge at of the tube A, as shown in Fig. 3, the heel being of course, rounded by the subsequent pressing operation to which all socks and stockings of this class are subjected.

The abrupt corner or lump common to the heels of ordinary cheap socks and stockings is obviated by this method of forming the heel, the latter being beveled, and therefore better adapted for the reception of the final rounded shape due to pressing than the ordinary socks or stockings.

The toe is formed as shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 8, a piece, D, of the shape shown in Fig. 6, being first knitted to the lower half of the end of that portion of the tube A forming the foot of the sock or stocking, as shown by the' dotted line It in Figs. 6 and 8.

The piece D consists of a strip, n, with a projecting flap, p, at each end. These flaps p are folded on the diagonal lines 3 the edges 8 s of the flaps united to each other, and the edges t t of the flaps united to the edge t of the strip n, as shown in Fig. 7, after which the foot of the stocking is folded longitudinally, as shown in Fig. 8, and the toe completed by uniting the edges '0 c of the flaps p to the upper half, w, of the end of that part of the tube A forming the foot of the stocking or sock, as shown in Fig. 3.

The various edges of the heel-piece B and toe-piece D are secured together or to the severed edges of the tube A by means of the ordinary seaming-machine, so that the seams are not protuberant and do not interfere with the comt'ort'of the wearer, my improved sock or stocking being in this respect equal to expensive stockings, the heels and toes of which are formed by means of a narrowing-frame.

In a separate application for patent filed by me on the 27th day of August, 1880, I have shown another method of forming the heel and toe of the stocking, which I disclaim in this application, my present plan of making the heel and toe differing from the former plan both in the shape of the heel and toe pieces and in the method of folding and seaming the same.

I claim as my invention- 1. A sock or stocking in which a partly-setered tube, A, of knitted fabric is combined with a heel-piece, B, having a recess, 0, and corner f, folded on the diagonalline x, the edges 9 g, h h, and t i being united, and the edges m m joined to the severed edge at of the tube, all substantially as set forth.

2. The mode herein described of forming the heel of a sock or stocking, said mode consisting in uniting to a partly-severed tube of knitted fabric a heel-piece, B, having a recess, 6, and diagonally-folded corner f, as set forth.
