This invention relates to improvements in lu gage cases. i
The present application is a division out of my co-pending application Serial Number 300,273 filed October 19, 1939 on which Patent No. 2,281,114 was issuediApril 28, 1942.
The primary object of the present invention is the provision of an improved bracket construction for connecting and supporting the hinged sections of aluggage case. I
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown only. a preferred embodiment of the invention,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the open luggage case;
Figure 2 is a sectional View taken thru a portion of the case in open position.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of the bracket construction with the sections of the case in the same horizontal plane.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 with the sections of the case in right angled position.
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the bracket construction of the sections of the case closed.
In the drawings, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts thruout the several views, the letter A generally designates the improved case, which includes a body section B and cover section C. The garment hanger arrangement D is associated with the cover section C and garment fold producing means E is provided. All of these are described in detail in my parent application above referred to. Bracket constructions F are provided at each side of the case at the hinged juncture of the cover and body sections.
As described in my parent application, the body section B consists of walls and 2|, a free end wall 22 and an end wall 23 to which the section 0 is hinged. The cover section C includes side walls 25 and 26; a free end wall 21 and end wall 28 to which the section B is hinged. An outer top wall 29 is, of course, provided as part of the cover structure.
The sections B and C are hinged in any approved manner, such as shown in my above identified parent application so that they may wing open completely in the same horizontal plane, as shown in Figure 2; extended in right angled relashown in Figure 6. Suitable handle and lock fastener portions 3| and 32 respectively are provided.
The. garment hanger arrangement D preferably consists of a plurality of garment hangers 8| supported by the wall'21.
The garment foldproducing means comprises the subject matter of my above identified parent application andinclude sa primary fold producing frame I02 and a-secondary' fold producing frame Illl, the detailed construction of whichare more specifically set forth in my above identified parent application. 1 p n A suitable curtain i3!) is provided for covering the packed garments. v v
The bracket constructions F are located at each side of the case and connect between the sections Band C. They not only serve to better stabilize-the connection of the sections, but enable the sections to be maintained in the socalled display position shownin Figure 1, and they further serve as connecting means for one of the garment fold positioning frames as will be subsequently described, Each of these bracket constructions F includes a bracket portion 4d fixedly connected to a side wall of the body sec tion B of the case; a bracket portionAl fixedly connected to the side wall of the cover portion C of the case, and a connecting link 42 between these portions and 4!. As is shown in the drawings, the bracket portion il has an attaching ear or flange which is riveted at 46 to the inner surface of each side wall of the cover section of the case, and from there it is bent to provide an attaching flange 4'! to which the link 42 is pivotally connected as at 48. The link 42 is of inverted U-shape formation and at its end opposite the pivot connection 48 is provided with a headed retaining pin 50 which slides in a horizontal slot 5! provided in the bracket portion 40 of the bracket construction F. This bracket portion 40 has an elongated body 52 in which the slot 5| is longitudinally provided, and it is provided with attaching cars 53 which are bent out of the plane of the body 52 and receive rivets 54 which attach the bracket portion 40 to the inner surface of each of the side walls of the body section B.
The brackets 48 and 4| are of course located adjacent the hinge connection of the case section B and C, and as aforesaid the pin 58, which may be a roller, slides in the slot 5! and enables the sections B and C to be properly opened and closed. The body 52 of the bracket portion 48 is provided with a latching notch 51 about midway tion as shown in Figure 1; or entirely closed as 55 between the ends of the slot 5| and communicating therewith, and in the lower edge of the slot, into which the slide pin 50 of the link 42 may be engaged, as shown in Figure 4 of the drawings, in order to hold the section B in right angled relation to the body section C of the case. In order to maintain this position a. spring urged detent ball 6Q is provided upon a. leg of the link 42, as shown in Figure 5, maintained in position by a leaf spring Bl, and-which may engage in. a notch 62 of the bracket 40 in order to hold the slide pin 50 of the link in the latch notch 53'? and maintain the luggage, casev sections in the the ends thereof and adapted to receive the stud of the link for holding the said sections in right angled position, and spring urged releasable derelation shown in Figures 7" and, 9 ofthe. draw:
ings. The leaf spring 6| which is socketed to receive the ball 60 preferably is held on the link 42 by means of the headed. slide pin 50 as shownin Figure 5 of the drawings; the head or rivet' 65 which is on the slide pin 50 being larger in diameter than the width of the slot 5!, for obvious reasons.
When the link 42 has assumed the position shown in Figure?! of the drawings with the slide pin 50 in its latched position in thenctch 5?, the-spring urged detent ball 60 will of course hold this position until the link 42 is pulled upwardly to detach the slide pin 50' from the notch 5-1 and place it inthe line of the slot 5!. When this position is assumed the detent ball 68 will ridejust along the top straight edge of the body- 52" of thebracket 40, where thestop and guideflange- T is provided, and the detent in this position, shown in dottedlines in Figure of the drawings, will then prevent the slidepin 50 from dropping into the notch 51-, and the case sections B and C may be opened and closed at will between positions where they are in the same plane and their closed posit-ion. In order for thepins 511 of these bracket constructions to again enterthe notch 51 they must b pushed toforce the spring urged detent ball 60 into the position where it is below the straight edge formed by the flange of the bracket 492 Variou changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be made to the present invention within the scope of the claims.
I' claim:
1. A luggage case comprising cover and body ten-t means carried by the pivoted connecting link and; engageable with the slotted bracket for holding thepinin said latched position.
2. A casing comprising cover and body sections, a-. slotted; bracket connected with one of said sections, a pivoted link type bracket connected with the other section having a stud extension slidable in the slot of the bracket of the first mentioned section so that said sections may be open to lie in the same plane, the'slotted bracket having a latch notch therein opening in theslot betweenthe endsof the slot. adapted to receive the stud of the, link for holding, the said section in -right angled. position, and spring urged detent means. carried. by the pivoted bracket connecting link engageable with the slotted bracket forreleasably holding the stud extension in or out of the latched notch.
3. A casing comprising; cover'and body sections, a slotted bracket connected with one of said sections, a pivoted link type bracket connected with the other section having a stud extension slidable in' the slot of the. bracket. of. the firstn'ientioned section so that saidsectionsmay be open to lie in the same plane the. slotted bracket having a latch notch therein opening in the slot between the ends of the slot adapted to receive the stud of'thelink for-holding the said sections in rightangled position, a springurged detentba-ll carried by the pivoted link releasably projecting from a side thereof facing the slotted bracket, the said slotted bracket'having, a. notch therein. adapted to releasably, receiyes'aid ball for holding the stud extensionin the-latch otch.
