1 Claim. (Cl. 343-43) This invention relates to dry shaving devices of a type wherein an apertured guard member is adapted to be pressed against and moved over the surface to be shaved, and wherein a power driven rotary cutter operates within such guard member to shave oil the stubble as it protrudes through the apertures of the guard member.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a simple and efficient shaving device of the above kind by means of which a smooth shave may be quickly and safely obtained.
A more specific object of the present invention is to provide a shaving device of the above kind wherein the guard member has a convexed apertured wall, wherein the rotary cutter has blades whose cutting edges conform to the convexed apertured wall of the guard member, and wherein the rotary cutter is so constructed and mounted with respect to the driving shaft thereof that the same is effectively driven and yieldingly pressed against'the apertured wall of the guard member for insuring eicient shearing action, free lateral movement of the cutter with respect to the driving shaft being permitted so that the cutter will be self-centering and will at all times have its cutting edges in proper intimate contact with the end apertured wall of the guard member.
Other objects and features of the present invention will become apparent from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view, partly in side elevati-on and partly in longitudinal section, of a shaving device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the guard member forming part of the device shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a transverse section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the present shaving device includes a hollow elongated handle 5 having a dome-shaped guard member 6 detachably secured on one end thereof. Arranged within the handle 5 is a suitable electric motor 'I whose drive shaft 8 projects through and outwardly beyond one end of the handle into the guard member 6. The attachment cord 9 including the wires for feeding current to the motor 'I is preferably extended through the opposite end of the handle and may be equipped with a suitable attachment plug to facilitate derivin-g the current from an ordinary electric socket or outlet receptacle. A rotary cutter Ill is carried by the projecting end of drive shaft 8 and includes radial blades having outer longitudinal sharpened edges. The guard member 6 has a conv'eXed apertured wall I I contacted by the cutter Il), and the outer cutting edges of said cutter conform to this apertured Wall for cooperating with the latter to afford the desired shearing action. The apertured Wall I I is adapted to be pressed against the skin so that the hair or stubble will enter the apertures thereof for being shorn when the cutter Il) is rotated, in a generally Well known manner. As shown in Figure 2, the apertures in the convexed Wall I I are numerous and provided substantially throughout the area of said wall, the apertures in `one segment of the wall being small and circular and those in the remaining segment 0r portion being in the form of slightly elongated slots. In this way, a maximum shaving area is provided, and short stubble will readily enter the small circular apertures, while the longer hairs or stubble will readily enter the elongated or slotlike apertures, particularly where the latter are near and extend into the side wall of4 the guard member. By using either or both segments of the guard plate, the desired shaving action may be accomplished. As shown, the guard member is of cap or dome shape and detachably threaded at I2 to the adjacent end of handle 5.
In the embodiment shown, the shaft 8 is provided in its outwardly projecting end portion with a relatively long longitudinal slot I3 that opens through the outer end of the shaft, and the cutter is in the nature of an elongated thin plate slidably disposed in this slot and spring pressed outwardly against the apertured Wall I l by means of a helical compression spring I4 surrounding the projecting end of the shaft 8 between the handle 5 and the cutter I. It Will be noted that the cutter is unattached to the shaft 8 and is therefore capable of lateral movement relative to shaft 8 so as to be self-centering and capable of properly engaging at its outer cutting edges with the apertured conveXed wall II. This is an important feature as it insures maximum cutting eiciency while providing the simplest form of cutter and mounting therefor. The interlocking of these sections may be effected by providing on one end of one section a circular projection or tongue I5 engaging in an undercut slot or opening I6 provided in the adjacent end of the other section as clearly shown in Figure 1. Slight clearance may be provided between the adjav cent end edges of the cutter sections at opposite sides of the tongue I5 and recess or slot I6 so that the cutter sections may swing relatively about the joint I5, I6 to elfect continuous contact of the cutting edges with the apertured wall Il even though eXtreme accuracy is not practiced in manufacture to secure exact conformity of the cutting edges of the cutter with the curvature of the Wall Il. This clearance is generally indicated at l1 in Figure 1.
It will be particularly noted that the cutter is unattached to the drive shaft and is capable of free lateral movement with respect to said shaft so as to be self-centering for proper contact of the cutting edges of the cutter with the apertured wall of the guard member. A very simple and highly efficient shaving device is thus provided which insures the performance of a smooth shave in a quick and entirely safe manner. In use, the motor 1 is placed into operation so as -to cause the cutter to be rapidly rotated with its cutting edges in contact with the apertured wall of the guard member, the edges of the apertures cooperating with the cutting edges of the cutter to effect the desired shearing operation of the hair or stubble as the latter enters the apertures of the'guard member.
What I claim as new is:
In a shaving device, the combination of a power driven rotatable shaft having a longitudinal elongated slot opening through one end thereof, a cutter member removably and slidably arranged in said slot and having cutting blades extending radially to each side of said shaft, said cutter member being unattached to the shaft for free lateral movement relative to the latter, a guard member. having an apertured convexed wall, -said cutter member .comprising two sections separably and swingably interlocked at their adjacent inner edges and with the interlocking portions thereof arranged within said -slotof the shaft, and yieldable means engaging Vthe twosections beyond the interlocked portions thereof for sliding and swinging the sections of said cutter member outwardly to engage the cutting edges thereof With the surface of said apertured wall.
