N.PErERS. FHOT HER WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
THOMAS B. BEESON, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
ROOFING-TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,965, dated November 2, 1880. Application led June 5, 1880. (Model.)
To all 'whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, THOMAS B. BEEsoN, of Wilmington, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Booting-Tongs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had t0 the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a view, in perspective, of my improved roong-tongs, and Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same.
The invention relates to edging-ton gs for turning the edges of sheet metal to form the standing seams in the roof; and it consists in the features of construction hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the jaws of the tongs, which consist of long metal bars provided at or near their upper edges with butts C, pi voted together by pins or rivets c, and provided, also, with handles B, formed with or secured to the jaws near their centers, but not pivoted together, asis customary in tongs. The inner faces of the jaws A are plane, as shown, to form bitingedges on the jaws. The lower faces of the butts O are slightly convex, to form a double concave in and under the butts, as shown at D, and serve as stops, against which the edge of the sheet metal abuts during the process of forming the bend. This construction of the butts renders it unnecessary to employ the gages usually found in this class of tongs, while the pivots, being located near each end and away from the center of the tongs, causes their bite upon the metal to be uniform throughout.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The herein-described rooting-tongs, consisting of the jaws A, plane on their inside surfaces from the butts O to the edge ot the outer beveled faces, provided with the central handle, B, and the butts C, near each end, extending inwardly from the vertical faces of the jaws A, made convex on their under faces, and forming, when pivoted together by the pins c, the double concaves D in and under the butts, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
THOS. BABB BEESON.
