ALEXANDRE HURTUBISE, OF SAGINAWV, MICHIGAN.
SLElGH-NOSE'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,469, dated February 13, 1894.v
Application liled August 26, 1893. $erial No. 484.076. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, Annxnnnnu HURTUBISE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Sleigh-Nose; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinventiou, snch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention is a nose for sleighs, especially logging sleighs.
' It has been common to form the sleigh runner with a crook in front, either by using timher that grew in that shape, or by bending it, or by cutting the timber in said shape, and then to prevent splitting and breaking when under strain, ironing the runner over the nose or crook either by a continuation of the shoe, or by another band riveted thereto, requiring a great deal of careful work in the forming of the runner and in ironing it so as to with stand the strain. I overcome this by using a nose hereinafter described, which I am able to fit onto a runner sawed straight on its top surface throughout its entire length.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side eleva tion of the runner provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the sleigh nose. Fig. 4: is a view of the same in part sectional on lines X-X, Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 are side elevations of the invention showing different constructions, and Fig. 7 is a view of Fig. 6, in part sectional on lines X-X, Fig. 6.
A is the runner, B the shoe. The runner A, as previously stated, has a fiat top surface, the lower surface bowing up, as is common, to the line of the top surface.
0 is the sleigh nose and is preferably of metal. It may be of wood properly ironed.
1 is the body of the nose, 2 an opening to receive the shaft connecting it to the other runner, and 3 alug for securing the draft. The latter may be omitted and the draft ap plied through the opening 2. The upper surface and end 4 of this nose is curved in form 'rib 1.
of the ordinary sleigh nose. The bottom 5 is flat and fits upon the top of the runner A, as shown.
' In Figs. 1, 2, S, and 4 l have illustrated a nose formed with a central rib or body 1, having projecting flanges above and below as 4,
and 5, with the hole 2 formed in this central In Figs. 5, 6, and '7, I have shown a nose made with sides 6, 6, and a central rib l, with hollows between the rib and sides, the sides being on line with the sides of the runner.
In Fig. 1 I have shown the shoe B extending upward beyond the top line of the runner and in front of the nose, thus serving to strengthen the means of securing the nose to the runner, which as here shown, is by the bolts D, passing through the body or rib 1, through the runner and shoe.
A special feature of my invention is that it can be applied to any runner by cutting off the front of the runner, forming a straight top surface, and bolting the nose to it. It can thus be applied to runners of the old construction that have been broken in front. Then, too, they can be replaced. Experience shows that the parts commonly broken in logging sleighs is the nose.
By using my invention the runner can be made to last a long time, thus causing a great saving to the user. Again, if the runner breaks, the nose, rave, and shoe can be removed from the old runner, a new one sawed out at once, the parts bolted thereto, and the damage remedied in short order without resort to ablacksmith or mechanic. It will thus be seen that my invention is of special ad vantage to timber and logging operators.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a sleigh runner of the class described a removable metal nose for the same consisting of a piece of metal of the Width of the runner edge having its under surface adapted to rest upon the said edge, holes through the body of the metal to receive bolts to secure the same to the sleigh runner, the front end of the said metal nose being rounded so as to form a continuation of the beveled end of too thereto and bowing over in the usual nose shape on a line with the beveled edge of the runner, and provided with holes for bolts to secure it, to the runner, and eyes for receiving the cross piece, substantially as specified. I5
In testimony whereof I affix mysignaturein presence of two witnesses.
ALEXANDRE HURTUB ISE.
