5. SHER LAMP SHADE Jan. 18, 1944.
Filed April '7, 1941 2 ]?22/972 07 filzmzzeZ 57w?" Patented Jan. 18, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LAMP SHADE Samuel Sher, Chicago, 111.
Application April '7, 1941, Serial No. 387,244
Claims.
My invention relates to an improved shade construction, and particularly to a novel construction and arrangement of frame, the covering material, and to an improved means for securing the said covering material to the frame.
The invention has among its objects the production of a shade of the kind described which is not only particularly attractive, but which may be conveniently, economically and satisfactorily manufactured.
A further object of the invention is to provide a new and novel frame construction which may be pre-built and to which the covering material may be readily, conveniently and durably secured.
A further object is theproduction of a shade of the kind described in which thescovering material is made in the form of a seamless tube of knit or woven or elastic or semi-elastic material which may be readily stretched in position on the frame and in which the material, due to its nature, after stretching in applying, willremain tautand smooth without wrinkles,
A further object is the production of a frame provided with means for readily attaching the cover to the frame by means of one or more annular members which may be sprung into position and positively engaged in theframe.
Many other objects and advantagesof the construction hereinshown anddescribed-willbe obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein given.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts:
Fig. I is an elevational view of a lamp shade structure embodying features of the invention, a portion of the shade construction being broken away to better illustrate the construction;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the shadeframe with the cover removed;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 3-3 of Fig. l; d
Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view showing the details of one of the methods ofattaching the shade to the frame;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the tubular fabric covering material; and
Fig. 6 is a view similarto aportion of Fig. 3, illustrating a slightly modified construction.
The invention as illustrated ina lamp shade construction consists of a unitary frame made up of 'top andbettom annular rings Land --2-rigid1y connected together by the rods 3, over which is arranged a tubular seamless cover, preferably knit or otherwise formed, so that it is substantially stretchable, whereby it may be stretched over the frame and, due to its inherent characteristics, draw or contract and maintain itself taut or tighten the frame.
The particular fram illustrated, as before mentioned, consists of top and bottom frame members suitably connected together, one or both of the frame members being shaped to suit but as shown only the bottom frame member, being of channel shape. The bottom frame member 2 as illustrated consists of a strip [of suitable material, preferably in the form of a metal stri ,'which is provided with spaced flanges 5 and 6. In the drawing the flanges are shown as extending outwardly, but as will be hereinafter described, they might be turned inwardly and the channeled member might be either at the top or bottom or both, only the bottom member, however, being shown in the form of a channel. As most clearly shown in Fig. 4 the flange 6 is provided with serrationsproviding prongs 1-1, etc., which may be bent down as hereinafter described when the cover is applied to the frame and to secure one end of the cover in place. In some instances both flanges might be serrated.
The cover III, as shown in Fig. 5, is made in the form of a sea'mless knit or woventube open at the two ends. At one end, as shown the bottom, the same is hemmed or folded over a securing ring I I, the edge end l2 being stitched to the adjacent body of the cover as indicated at l3 so that thering is held in place on the cover. The ring II is of a size to fit in the channel of the frame member 2, it being possible to spring the same into place, and when so positioned will be held in place when the cover is drawn to the interior ofthe shade, as shown in Fig. 4, and at the same time holds the cover edge firmly in place. The cover is drawn through the shade and up over the frame member I and then the edge drawn back to the frame member 2 and moved inwardly, wherebyitwill be engaged by theprongs I. If desired, a reinforcingstrip l4 may be secured about the edge of the cover, although ordinarily this is "not considered necessary. After the same is positioned, as shown in Fig.- 4, the prongs I may be turned down or bent over as indicated in Fig. 3. After the cover hasbeen applied to the frame, a tape orornamental strip l 5 may be applied at the top and-likewise a strip H5 at the bottom, as shown in Fig. 1. While-I havenot illustrated a constructiomin-whioh.thaflanges taa-framemerm her are turned inwardly instead of outwardly, such arrangement and application of the cover thereto is obvious from the disclosures made herein. Likewise, while I have referred to a seamless knit tubular cover, I wish to include any elastic or semi-elastic material which will be satisfactory.
The construction shown in Fig. 6 is very similar, except in this instance the channeled frame member l920 is not provided. with a serrated flange. The cover at the ends of the tube [0, indicated at l8 in Fig. 6, is provided with the rings 2| which are secured in place by stitching the ends 22 as indicated at 23. Thi cover is applied substantially as previously described, except that the two rings 2| are sprung into place, thereby retaining the cover on the frame. Tape may be applied similar to tape l6 shown in Fig. 1.
As was previously mentioned, it is more or less immaterial which ring or frame member is channeled, or whether the flange of the channel extends inwardly or outwardly, but the preferred construction and arrangement are as shown in the figures of the drawing. The covering being of seamless, stretchable material in the form of a tube, may be readily applied to the frame, and owing to its inherent qualities or characteristics, will tend to contract and maintain itself taut on the frame, free from wrinkles or bulges. The
cover may be knit or Woven with an intermediate section of a reduced diameter like an hour glass, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 5, where it is to be extended over a frame member of less diameter than that at the ends, and vice versa, or it may be knit in one, two or more sections. I have not shown in the drawing any support for mounting the covered frame on a fixture, it being understood that any suitable support may be employed, the same being generally attached to the top frame member at a plurality of points, but it may, in some instances, be attached to the lower frame member and be likewise constructed so that it may be applied to a desired lighting fixture.
Having thus described my invention, it is ob- .vious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned.
