THE GRAPHIC C0.PNOT0.LITH.39&41 PARK PLAGLNAC UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN PATRICK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
VENTILATING VAULT-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,387, dated March 29, 1859'.
To all whom it 'may concern,.- i
Be it known that I, JOHN PATRICK, of the city, county, and State-of New York, have I invented, made, and applied to use a certain new' and useful Improvement in Means for Ventilating the Roofs of Vaults and Buildings; and I do hereby declare that the foll lowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specication, wherein- Figure l, is a vertical section of portions of a vault roof fitted with my improvement and Fig. 2, is an inverted plan of the same.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
In the roofs of vaults and particularly those formed of iron there is considerable condensation, especially in cold weather', and this forming drops of water injures goods that may be stored aw'ay in such vaults, by dropping on the same. Besides this the dampness rusts the metal, and disfigures the ceiling of the vault which is a great detriment to the appearance, particularly in those vaults which are illuminated, and the'underside of the roof or side walk painted white. The same remarks apply to the roofs of buildings when made of metal.
The nature of my said invention consists in the introduction of a perforated plate (6a) a short distance below the roof or sidewalk Z), the perforations in which are formed at the apex of thimbles or projections, and the ends or edges of these plates are turned down into troughs or gutters It will now be apparent that any condensation on the roof .or side walk Z; from vapors arising through the perforated plate L will be caught on said plate a, and run away by the gutters c, from whence the water can he conveyed to the street sewer or other discharge by a suitable leader. The space thus left between the plates a, and b, is to be ventilated so as to prevent as much as possible the condensation; for this purpose a pipe d, is led away in any convenient manner from the space between the plates and terminates l in the open air at a sufficiently higher elevation.
In the drawing my improvement is shown as applied to the roof of a vault forming a street sidewalk, but the said improvement can be applied to the roof of any vault or to the metallic roofs of buildings; and in places where illuminating glasses are used for sidewalks, the perforated plate may be dispensed with, or a plate of glass introduced in place thereof.
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The perforated plate and gutter in combination with the metallic roof, ceiling or walk, for forming a Ventilating space and catching any water of condensation in the manner and for the purposes specified.
2. And in combination therewith I claim the Ventilating pipe d, as and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this fifth day of February 1859.
JOHN PATRICK.
