Description
Dec. 28, 1943. J. ZEITENBERG HANDBAG Filed Nov. 24; 1942 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 28, 1943 HANDBAG Jack Zeitenberg, Philadelphia, Pa... assignor to Atlantic Products Corporation, Trenton, N. J., a corporation of New Jersey Application November 24, 1942, Serial No. 466,711
2 Claims. (01. 190-41) This invention relates to handbags and constitutes an improvement on handbags of the type disclosed in Cart Patent No. 2,024,758 dated December 17, 1935.
It is an object of the invention to provide improved closure means for such handbags.
A preferred embodiment of the invention selected for purposes of illustration is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bag with the gusset or cover closed.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the gusset or cover opened.
Referring to the drawing, the bag comprises side members I and 2 and a bottom member 3, which members may be made from a single piece of material or from a plurality of pieces of material stitched together. The side members have top edges 4 and end edges 5 and 6, the end edges preferably merging into the top edge along rounded corners 1.
Closing the ends of the bag are a pair of end members 8 which are secured to the edges of the side members I and 2 and are also secured to the end edge of the bottom 3. The said end members 8 extend along the rounded corners I and a short distance along the top edges of said side members I and are then reversely folded along the line 9 to form a flap l6 at each end of the bag, the side edges of said flaps being secured to the edges of the side members and the end edges I! of said flaps being free. A line of stitching I8 across each of said flaps and end members forms a pocket therein for the reception of a strip In of stifiening material, such as fiber, for example, which serves to space the top edges of the side members and to cause the bag to stand open for the convenient insertion of articles.
Secured along the top edges of the side members l and 2 and overlapping the flaps It to some extent are a pair of gusset members H and I2 forming a closure for the top of the bag. The member II is somewhat shorter than the member I2 and its ends terminate short of the end edges ll of the flaps l6 while the ends of the member I2 terminate substantially flush with the end edges I1 of the flaps It. In closing the bag the member ll lies under the member l2 and the ends of member I 2 are provided with one part I3 of a snap fastener, the other mating part l3 of which is secured to the flap I6. In closing the bag the fingers may be slipped under the flaps to facilitate closing of the snap fasteners and a neat and secure closure is efiected.
If desired the members II and I2 may be stiffened longitudinally by strips I4 of suitable material, and handles I5 may be secured to the side members in any suitable manner.
It will be understood that the invention may be variously modified and embodied within the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A handbag having side members having top edges and end edges, end members secured to said side members along said end edges, said end members extending a short distance along said top edges and secured thereto to form short top members, flaps secured to and extending from the inner ends of said top members toward said end edges, exteriorly of and overlapping said short top members, the side edges of said flaps being secured to said side members and the end edges of said flaps being free, gusset members secured to the top edges of said side members and overlapping said flaps, one of said gusset members carrying one part of a snap fastener adjacent each end, and the free ends of said flaps carrying the other mating parts of said snap fasteners.
2. A handbag having side members having top edges and end edges, end members secured to said side members along said end edges and a short distance along said top edges, said end members being reversely folded to form flaps, the side ed es of said flaps being secured to said side members and the end edges of said flaps being free, gusset members secured to the top edges of said side members and overlapping said flaps, one of said gusset members being shorter than the other and terminating short of the end edges of said flaps, the longer gusset member terminating substantially flush with the end edges of said flaps, the longer gusset member carrying one part of a snap fastener adjacent each end, and said flaps carrying the other mating parts of said snap fasteners.
JACK ZEI'I'ENBERG.
