1 Claim.
The invention relates to improvements in means for flanging openings in metal, and particularly for forming flanges around openings in waste lead articles, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a simple, relatively inexpensive and relatively small-sized tool of this character.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description taken in connection with the appended drawing, wherein for purposes of illustration a preferred embodiment of the invention is shown.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a general side elevational view of the embodiment showing the same applied to work.
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical sectional View taken through Figure 2 along the line 33, and looking toward the lines in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 5 generally designates the improved flanging tool which comprises a standard which is generally designated 6 which consists of an inverted U- shape with the legs 1 diverging downwardly and connected together by semi-circular elements 8, the elements 8 being preferably integral with the legs and formed to immediately merge with the lower ends of lateral reinforcing flanges 9 which extend up along the opposite sides of the legs I and along the bight portion to join the substantially cylindrical tubular element 10 which is located at the middle of the bight portion and extends on opposite sides of the legs as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing and also in Figure 4 thereof.
The under surface of the semi-circular elements 8 are longitudinally upwardly curved or bowed as indicated by the numeral II and also transversely downwardly curved or bowed as indicated by the numeral l2 in Figure 2. The longitudinal curvature II is to generally conform to the curved surface of a cylindrical or other similarly curved waste lead or similar material article l3.
The present device further comprises the flanging element which is generally designated M which comprises a solid frusto-conical top l5 which is provided with an axial threaded bore It, the base of the frusto-conical portion terminating in a relatively uniform cylindrical portion I'I whose lower end merges into an enlarged bulbous portion IS. The flanging element 14 has a vertical screw l9 threaded in the bore l6 and has a smooth portion 20 turning in the bore 2| of the cylindrical element 10 at the top of the standard 6. Above the smooth portion 253 is a combined bearing and stop flange 22 which rotatably bears upon the upper end of the element A crank handle 23, preferably integral with the screw projects laterally from the stop flange 22.
In utilizing the device of the invention a hole 26 is first formed in the work I3 and the frustoconical top 15 of the flanging element Id is then placed in the hole, whereupon the standard it is axially aligned with the flanging element and the screw I9 is threaded in the hole it of the flanging element. The crank handle 23 is then operated in a direction to thread the flanging element 14 toward the base portion of the standard, thereby causing the flanging element to move through the hole 24 and enlarge the same, and at the same time turn the edges of the hole up to form the desired flange 25. Upon completion of the flange the tool is removed in an obvious manner.
Although there is shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not desire to limit the application of the invention thereto except as may be required by the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new 1s:
A flanging tool of the character described, said tool comprising a flanging element to enter a hole formed in the work, said flanging element being provided with an axial threaded bore, a standard for engaging the work around the hole at the opposite side from the flanging element, a bearing on said standard axially alignable with the threaded bore of the flanging element, a screw journaled in said standard and threadable in the bore of the flanging element, and means for rotating the screw to draw the flanging element toward the standard to push the edges of the hole of the work laterally with respect to the work to form the desired flange, said standard comprising an open-work frame having a base substantially circular and provided with a bottom edge including diametrically opposite convex portions and similarly arranged concave portions intermediate the convex portions whereby said base is adapted to conformably tit against a cylindrlcal piece of work, said hanging element having a reduced tapered front end tip to enter a hole, an intermediate substantially cylindrical portion for establishing the internal diameter of the nange around the hole, and an enlarged bulbous rear end for wedging into the flange to pre-- vent the element from being drawn through the hole.
