SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,729, dated October 26, 1880.

Application filed August 19, 1880. (No model) To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that l', PATRICK B. OoLLINs, of South Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Support for Carriage-Tops, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved support for carriage-tops which is simple in construction, convenient and effective in use, and can be adjusted forward and backward, as also sidewise.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a front elevation of my improved carriage-top support, showing the top inclined toward the front. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, showing the top inclined sidewise. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of my improved carriage-top support, showing it turned down sidewise at right angles. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the front piece.

The carriagetop support is formed of two sections, A and B, attached to the body C of the carriage and the top D, respectively, and connected to each other by means of a jointpiece, E, pivoted to both sections A and B by the pintles F and G.

The joint-pieceE consists oftwo metal plates or lugs, H and J, which are attached to each other transversely at the edges, as shown in Fig. 4, which lugs or plates are provided with a series of recesses or perforations, K K, arranged on acircular line around the center aperture, through which the pintle passes, the perforations being above the pintle-aperture, or the lugs may be provided with a series of radial grooves, L L.

Each section A and B is provided with a spring-catch, M, provided with a stud, N, at

the upper end fitting into the perforations K K or grooves L L, this catch preferably consisting of a lever provided with a spring, 0, as shown. I

The operation is as follows: If the carriagetop D is to be inclined toward the rear or front, as shown in Fig. 1, the catch M of the upper section, B, is disengaged from the apertures K K or grooves L L of the lug or plate L, thus permitting the upper section, B, to swing forward or backward on the pintle F, and it may be locked in any desired position by permitting the catch M to take in a corresponding aperture or groove of the lug L. If the top 1) is to be inclined sidewise, the catch M of the lower section is released, and the upper section, A, and the joint-pieceE are swung sidewise on the pintle G and then looked in the desired position by means of the spring-catch M of the lower section, A.

. The top D may be inclined fore or aft or sidewise, or both fore or aft and sidewise, at the same time, as may be desired. These supports may be also used to support awnings, sunshades, &c.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a vehicle, the combination, with sections A B. attached to top and body, of the intermediate pivoted joint-piece, E, grooved or perforated as described, and the spring-catches having studs N, fitting said grooves or perforations, as shown, and for the purpose specitied.
