M. 0. SHRIVBR.
Pence Post.
No. 233,564. Patented Oct. 19,1880.
' INVENTIIIFQ? Maw NITED STATES MARK O. SHRIVER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,564, dated October 19, 1880. Application filed March 15, 1880. (No model.)-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARK 0. SHRIVER, of the city of'Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification; and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to an improved post to be used in connection with a series of wires to form a wire fence; and it consists in constructing the post in two sections, adapted, when connected together, to interlock and secure permanently in position the wires which are placed between them.
It further consists in certain details of construction of the fence-post, as hereinafter fully described.
In the further description of my said invention which follows, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- 4 Figure I is an exterior elevation of the improved fence-post and the base to which it is attached. Fig. II is an exterior elevation of the invention and its base as seen from a different point of view from Fig. I, the two parts or sections of the post being shown as separated and withdrawn from the base. Figs. III and IV are cross-sections of the fencepost, taken respectively on the dotted lines 1; w and m y. I
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the views.
In the said drawings, A and A are the two parts or sections of the fence-post, which in Fig. I are shown connected and their lower ends inserted in a base, B. The said sections are hollow, or of box form, and have vertical ribs a a, which are lapped as the said sections are united. The two sections of the post differ only in that their vertical ribs a a are notched for the reception of the wire I) in reversed directions, and that the rib a is extended and adapted to pass through a perforation in a side extension of the rib a and the main portion of the section A. This construction of the two sections admits of the Wires being securely held and the formation of a complete post in practically a single piece when the said sections are properly placed together and locked.
The projecting end of the rib a may be used as means of attaching guy rods or wires extending from the base or the ground on either side of the post.
The lower end of the post is adapted to be either driven in the ground or inserted in a base, as shown in the drawings.
The lower end of the fence-post, when the same is to be inserted in a base such as is shown in the drawings, is provided'with lugs c, to allow of the said post being secured to the base. The said base consists of a plate having a hollow tapering bar projecting from the under side thereof adapted to be drivenin the ground. The lower end of the two sections of the post are inserted in the hollow bar and secured therein by means of revoluble bolts fitted with projections, which projections, when the bolts are turned, pass over the lugs c and draw the post tightly to its place.
I claim as my iiwention 1. A fence-post consisting of two hollow or box-shaped sections having a practically-uniform exterior. the said sections being provided with notched ribs extending longitudinally thereof, and adapted to lap and hold the fencewire and to interlock at their upper ends, substantially as herein specified.
2. A fence-post consisting of two hollow or box-shaped sections, adapted at their upper ends to interlock and at their lower ends to be united and form a tapering bar suitable for introduction toabaseorfor drivingin theground, the said section being provided with longitudinally-extending notched ribs arranged to lap as the two sections are united, and thereby hold fence-wires placed between them.
