UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER A. AIKMAN, OF WINDSOR, ONTARIO, CANADA.
STOVE-DAM PER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,456, dated October 19, 1880,
Application filed. April 5, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER AUGUSTUS AIK- MAN, of the town of Windsor, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Stove Dampers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to regulate the quantity of air or smoke passing along difierent channels of stoves, furnaces, or other appliances for supplying heat for any purpose, by means of either a rotary motion of a handle or a sliding movement of the same, or both combined, the handle being attached to plates having orifices or slots formed in them, and so placed as to admit anydesired quantity of air or smoke through them by the sliding movement of the handle, the rotary motion being made use-of to open or close the damper in the usual manner. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the damper with the slide open. Fig. 2 is an elevation, showing the slide closed; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing the damper with the slide open and the main air or smoke passage partly opened by the rotary motion of the handle.
The construction and operation of the damper are as follows: In an air or smoke channel, A, of a stove or other heating apparatus, are placed two plates, B and O, having openings H H formed in the former, and openings I I in the latter. The plate B is made fast to a hingerod, J, passing through the side walls of the channel A, and terminating in a handle,
(ModeL) G. This plate has a slot, F, near its center, working in connection with a headed pin, E, which is screwed or otherwise fastened to plate 0. Plate 0 has its orifices so placed that when slide-plate B is moved as far as possible to the right they are covered by the bars of plate B. At the lower right-hand corner of plate 0 is formed a short pin, g, which, passing through the corresponding side wall of the smoke-passage, forms, in connection with the hinge-rod J, a complete hinge or axis for both plates, which can thus be moved by turning handle Gr, so as to entirely or partially open the smoke (or air) passage, as desired.
I am aware that dampers have been made before consisting of two contiguous perforated plates sliding upon one another and operated by a common hinge or spindle, around which they rotate; nor do I claim such construction and combination, broadly; but
What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination, with a flue or channel, A, of the slotted damper plate 0, of a width corresponding to said flue, and having a studhinge, g, at its lower end, and slotted plate B, adjustable upon said plate 1, and provided with a hinge rod or spindle, J, at its lower end, and in line with the stud-hinge g of plate 0, substantially as set forth.
P. A. AIKMAN.
