March, East Orange, N. J., assignor to` American Can Company', New York, N. Y., a corporation oi' New Jersey application .any ze, 1941, serial No. mais 1o claims. (c1. ca -ae) The. present invention relates to a machine for making nbre container parts and has particular reference to forming and assembling such parts to produce a container end closure unit.
In the manufacture of fibre containers of the character disclosed in United States Patent 2,085,979. issued July 6, 1937, to John M. Hothersail, on Container, the top end member o1 the container is provided with a `closure element which preferably is secured in place with a staple so that the closure element may be opened and closed by bending it adjacent the staple in hinge simultaneously from a web' of fibre material, as-
sembled in proper` position on preformed end members advanced in -a plurality o! lines adjacent the path of .travel of the web, and are secured in place by wire staples to produce complete end closure` units ready for subsequent assembly with containers.
Another object is the provision of such a macine wherein the closure element blank is shaped while being attached to the web and is cut free of the web for a drawing operation that completes the closure element so that it may be assembled with and secured in place on the end member.
Another object is the provision of a machine of this character wherein the severing of the shaped closure element from therw'eb and the drawing operation on the element areperformed substantially simultaneously at the same station of the machine A Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken' in connection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.

Fig. 22 is an enlarged longitudinal section taken substantially alongthe line 22--22 in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 23 is a transverse section taken substantially along the line 23--23 in Fig. 22.
As a preferred embodiment of the instant invention the drawings illustrate a machine in which closure elements A (Fig. 18) having depressed or drawn plug sections B arecut and formed from a web or strip C (Fig. 17) of paper board or other fibrous material which is fed 'through the machine in a step-by-step movement.
The web preferably is suiiiciently wide to cut v'and form two closure elements simultaneously fromthe same web, one each in two rows extend-'- ing longitudinally of the web.
' side of the web. These end members are fed from suitable stacks of such members and each memberjs formed with a dispensing hole or aperture E adapted to receive the plug section of a closure element A.
At the proper time after a pair of closure elements A have been severed from the web and are fully formed, they are swept side-wise or laterally in opposite directions to bring them into position over the top of a pair of end members in the processione of such members moving with the web. While in this position the closure elements are assembled with the end members by being forced down onto the latter, the plug sections B y of the closure elements being pushed into the dispensing openings E of the end members. The
"closure elements are thus held tightly in position f the parts together.
tion, a wire staple F (Fig. 21) is driven through the assembled parts adjacent a tab G on the closure element and this staple permanently secures This completes the assembling operations and the end closure units thus produced are-re-stacked ready for use.
In the machine the advancement of the web C of closure element material and the advancement of the preformed end members D, are carried out along straight line paths of travel and a simple, highly eilicient and high speed construction thus obtains. The web C yis substantially continuous and may be unrolled from a suitable supply roll in any preferred manner.
1 'I'he web C as it enters the machine is received on and is fed along a table 3| (Figs. 1, 2, 3, 10 and 13) secured to a bracket 32 bolted to a frame bed 33. The frame bed is bolted to legs 34 which are supported on a base 35 and these parts constitute the main frame of the machine. Hold-down bars 36 disposed above the table prevent upward displacement of the web. These hold-down bars are secured to transverse tie bars 31 and ahandle 38 bolted to one of these tie bars is provided for removal of the hold-down bars when desired. The two outer hold-down bars also serve as guide rails for maintaining the web in proper position on the table. Y
The web C is fed along the table 3| in a stepby-step or intermittent manner by a pair of feed rollers 4|, 42 (Figs. 2, 3 and 12) which are located adjacent the outer end of the table. Roller 4| is disposed below the web C and is mounted on a shaft 44 carried in bearings 45 in a bracket 48 bolted to the frame bed 33. The roller is periodically rotated by a ratchet Wheel 41- (see also Fig. 1) which is keyed to an outer end of the roller shaft 44. The ratchet wheel is actuated ing 58 in the bracket 46 and in a bearing 59 in the frame bed 33. Adjacent the bearing 59, the shaft 51 carries a cam lever 6| having a Cam roller 62 which operates in a cam groove 63 of a barrel cam 64 mounted on a continuously rotating cam shaft 65.
The cam shaft 65 extends longitudinally of the machine along one side of the frame bed 33 and is journaled in a plurality of spaced bearings 66 formed in a trough-like extension 61 of the frame bed. The cam shaft is rotated by a bevel gear '1| (Fig. 2) which meshes with a bevel gear 12 mounted on the upper end of a vertical shaft13 (Fig. 8) Journaled in bearings 14 formed in a housing 15 bolted to the machine base 35 and formed as a part of the leg section 34.
The vertical shaft 13 is rotated by a helical gear 16 which is keyed thereto and which meshes with a helical driving gear 11 mounted on a main drive shaft 18 (see also Fig. 6) which extends transversely of the machine near the center thereof. 'I'his drive shaft is journaled in bearings 19 in the housing 15 and in a plurality of spaced bearing brackets 8| which are bolted to the machine base 35. The shaft is driven in any suitable manner in time with the other moving parts of the machine.
The feed roller 42 (Figs. l, 2, 3 and 12) is located above the web C and is mounted on a shaft carried. in side arms 86. The arms are mounted on pivot pins 81 carried in lugs 88 formed on the bracket 46. This roller 42 constitutes a pressure roller which presses the web C down tightly against the feed roller 4|. The pressure is exerted by compression springs 9| (Fig. 1) which are seated against the top edge of the side arms 86. The springs are held in place by lock- -nuts 92 threaded on long studs 93 which extend down through the springs and the arms and are secured in the bracket 46.
The pressure roller 42 rotates in unison with the feed roller 4| for advancing the web C into the machine. For this purpose the pressure roller shaft carries a spur gear 95 (Fig. 12) which meshes with a similar gear 96 mounted on the feed roller shaft 44.
As the web C is advanced in its step-by-step movement along the tablel 3|, it enters a cutting and forming mechanism |8| which produces various stages of completion of the closure elements A in different parts of the web. It is at the cut--r ting step that irregular shaped and staggered areas K (Fig. 17) are cut out from the middle of the strip. This forms part of the boundary of four of the closure elements.
At the same operating stroke of the cutting mechanism and in different positions, two slots L are cut in what will be two of the tabs G. Also two substantially triangular areas M are cut away from opposite edges of the web to shape the fronts of two of the closure elements. The cutting raway of the areas K, L and M at each step of cutting removes all waste and shapes blanks N for the closure elements but what will be the individual blanks remain integral with the web until severed at a subsequent station in the machine. Uncut bridge portions O provide the juncture between two adjacent blanks.
In the same mechanism |0| but at a later stroke, the bridge. portion O between blanks N is cut through to sever this closure element blank N from the web. Following this severing operation and as a final step the plug section B is drawn in the blank N and this completes the forming of a closure element A. After the operations have once been startedtwo completed elements A result at each operating stroke of the mechanism |0|.
The cutting and drawing operations incidental *l .to the complete forming ofthe closure elements A, is brought about by cooperating punch die members which preferably are included in the mechanism I0| and between which the web passes. These members include a stationary die block |04 (Figs. 2, 3, 6, 15 and'l) and vertically movable cooperating punches |05'. The dieblock |04 Vis secured to a bolster plate |06 bolted to the frame bed 33.
The top of the die block is flush with the path of travel of the web so that the latter will readily advance across it. A stripper plate |01 is dis` posed above the block to hold the web against upward displacement. The die block is formed with openings |08 which correspond in shape to the areas K, L and M to be cut from the web while the stripper plate, the bolster plate and the frame bed are formed with slightly larger clearance openings |09 of the same general shape.
The punches |05 are disposed above the-web C and cooperate with the die block openings |08 in cutting the areas K, L and M from the web. v
For this purpose the punches are mounted in a punch head H5 (Figs. 1, 3, 6, 7 and 16) 4which is bolted to a vertically movable lcross-head -||5. The cross-head extends transversely of the machine and eachend is secured to the upper shoul-V dered ends of a pair of spaced and parallel vertical actuating rods I|1. The cross-headfis held in place by locknuts H8.
The actuating rods ||1 extend down `through guide bearing brackets I2| which are bolted to the top of the frame bed 33, there being two brackets on each side of the machine as bestl shown in Fig. 2. The guide brackets,l are located in clearance openings |22 in the frame bed and provide long bearings for the rods. The-lower ends of the rods ||1 are shouldered and are se-l cured by nutsy |24 to an actuating member |25. This member holds all four of the actuating i rods |I1.
The actuating member |25 is held in vertical alignment by a pair of spaced and vertical pilot posed between the bearing |33 and a collar |35I on the stem. This provides a iiexible or yieldable connection between the member and thestem.
The lower end of the stem |32 carries a swivel head |4| (see Fig. 3) which is mounted on a pivot pin |42 inthe stem. Opposite sides of the head are pivotally connected to a pair of angularly disposed Veccentric arms |43 which operate on eccentrios |44 mounted on the main drive shaft 18. The eccentrics are arranged to vertically reciprocate the stem |32 while maintaining it in vertical alignment and there-v by prevent any side shifting of the actuating member |25 so that binding on its pilot pins |28 will be eliminated.
Thus'as the main drive shaft 18 rotates, it revolves the eccentrics |44 and hence through the eccentric arm |43, raises and lowers the` actuating member |25. This vertical movement of the actuating membershiftsthe actuating.V
rods ||1 'and thus raises and lowers the cross? head H6 and the punches |05 carried therein. On the downward stroke of the crosshead, the punches cooperate Awith the die block |04 and cut away the scrap portions of the web C to shape the closure element blank N as hereinbefore explained.'
4Severlng of a completely shaped closure element blank N lfrom the web C is effected by a tubular cut-off knife 'l5| (Fig. 16) which is carried in the Ypunch or crosshead `I|6. There' are two of these cut-off knives, one for each y vlongitudinal row of closure element blanks N r the web. Each knife is formed with a cutting or shearing edge' |52 which cooperates with a Vsimilar edge |53 on the die block |04 in cutting across the bridge O (Fig. 1 7) which connects the closure element blank N to the web'.
The severing operation iseffected on the down V stroke of the cross-head H8 and on this same stroke the 'cut-off knife pushes the severed blank N down into place on a draw ring |56 1or the drawing operation. The draw ring is seated in a stepped recess |51 located in the bolster plate |06. Within the ring there is an ejectingvplunger |58.l The plunger is normally held in a position flush with the top'of the draw ring, vby a] compression spring |59 which is housed within the plunger and which exerts its pressure against the frame bed`33.
After moving the sheared oi blank N down onto the draw ring |56, the tubular cut-off knife |5| momentarilyremai'ns stationary at the bottom of 'its stroke to hold the biankwith .a slip grip for and during the. drawing Opera* tion. This drawing operation immediately follows the cutting oif operation and produces the plug section B in the blank.
'I `he drawing of the plug sections B inthe blanks N is brought about by drawing punches |55 (Fig. 16)` which are carried Vin the tubular cut-oil knives |5I. There is one of these'punches for each knife and they extend up through ciear--` ance holes |86 in the punch head H5, and in thev cross head IIB andare secured at their -upper ends in an auxiliary cross head |1| (Fig.
6) The upper ends of the punches are threaded V and are locked in the auxiliary cross head by locknuts |12 which permit of adjusting the punch vertically 'to obtain a desired depth of draw in the blanks N.
The auxiliary cross head |1I is mounted directly above the cross'head H6 and is actuated independently of cross head H6. For this pur- 'pose the ends of the auxiliary c'ross head are .secured to the upper shouldered ends of vertical.
actuating rods |15. There is one of these rods at each end of the auxiliary cross head and they are disposed between and in line with the two actuating` rods I|1 of the-cross head H6 (see Fig. 2).
These rods |15 extend down through guide holes |15 (Fig. 6) in the cross head H6, holes |11 `in the frame bed 33, and holes |18 in the actu-4 ating member |25. Below the actuating member |25 the lower end of each actuating rod |15 terminates in a clevis |8|which carries a pivot pin |82 for a crank arm |83- mounted on a crank |84 formed in the main drive shaft 18. 'There are two of these cranks |84, one for each actuat-I ing rodv |15.

The feed bars 222 are disposed in slideways 224 (Figs. 22 and 23) formed in the runways |89. AdJacent4 oneend, each bar is formed with arack 223 which extends down through an opening 229 in the runway and which meshes with a segmentv gear 221. The segment gear is formed 'o n anupright ar'm of a bell crank 228 mounted on and keyed to a rocker shaft 229.` There are two of thesebell cranks, one for eachl feed barizzz.
T her'oeker' shaft 229 extends transversely of .the machine and iscarried in a pair of spaced bearings 230 which depend from the bottom of I the frame bed 33.
One of the bell cranks 223 is. connected by'a link 23| to an eccentric 232 (see also Figa-3 and '4) which is mounted on an .eccentric shaft 233 (see also Fig. 1) iournaled in bearings 234 in the leg section 34 of the machine frame. The eccentric shaft is driven by an endless chain 235 which operates over a sprocket 239 on the shaft and over a driving sprocket 231 on the main drive shaft 13.
Hence the rotation of the main drive shaft 19 vlrevolves the eccentric shaft 233 and this through the eccentric 232 rocks the rocker shaft 229. Rocking of this shaft rocks the bell cranks 228.
It is this rocking of the bell cranks that reciprovca'tes the two feed bars 222 through a forward or vfeedinfsftroke to advance the end members D valong thev runways |39l andthence through a return stroke.

one idle 'station before'being introduced into an 0n the opposite side ofthe machine, 'an end member moving along its runway moves through two idle stations before entering the assembly station. These assembly'stations are located adjacent the place where the closure elements A are formed after being severed from the web C.
' Whilef'an end member D is. at this assembly -station 241-a `finished closure element A is swept sidwise from its position on the ejector plunger |58 (Fig. 16) of the draw ring |56 to a position '-directly over the dispensing opening E of the end menber.` 'This shifting of the closure element is effected bya' transfer arm 25| (Figs. 2, 14 and 15) having a curved hook end 252 which is engageable around the drawn plugsection B of aclosure 'Y element. l
There are two of these transfer arms 25|, one for each row of closure elements in the web C and they are arranged as best Vshown in Fig. 15. These s ing 215 for the plunger (Fig. 9).
yasesina' arms are secured tothe upper ends of apair of rocker shafts 254 (Fig. 14) which are carried in bearings255 of the shafts carry meshing segment gears 256 so that the shafts and the arms maybe rocked in unison. i
One of the shafts also carries a segment bevel gear 251 which meshes with a similar gear 258 mounted on a rocker shaft 259 carried inbearings 261 in the frame bed 33. This .rocker shaft extends outside the bed and carries a camlever 262 having a cam roller 263 which operates-'inV a cam groove 254 (see also Fig. 2) of a barrel cam 265 mounted on the cam shaft 65.
Thus as the cam shaft 65 rotates the cam 265, the latter rocks the cam lever 262 and the rocker. shaft 259 and through thegear connection exe in the frame bed 33,.4 Thelower ends the anvils 211 against the resistance of the spring barrels 281, the closure element to withdraw the. anvil to ofthe assembled closure sembled parts may be further advancedalong the runway 189 as a unit.

At the assembly station 241, the positioned clo- I sure element A is pushed downonto the end member D by an assembling plunger 211 (Fig. 7).`
There is one of these plungers for each assembly station and they extend up through the cross head 116 and are secured by locknuts 212 in the auxiliary cross head 111. v
Onthe down stroke of the auxiliary cross head the plungers move down against the closure elethe bottom of .the frame bed. -There are two of y character disclosed in bed 33.
After such an assembling operation the closure unit is advanced bythe feed bars 222 through an idle station and thence into a stapling station 311 (Fig. 2) where the staple F; is insertedinto the assembled parts to secure them together. The. staples are formed from strands 312 (Figs. '1,13- v and 4) of wire taken` from a pair of spools 313 located one on each side oneach sideof the machine. ment. It is this movement that inserts the plug section B of the closure element into the dispensing opening E of the end member and thusv assembles the parts for further advancement'. On the return up stroke of the plunger the assembled parts are prevented from rising with the plunger, by a stripper plate 214 having a clearanceopen- During this assembling operation ber D is backed-up from below by a movable anvil 211 (Figs. 9 and 1l) which is recessed to clear the plug section Bof the closure'element. The anvil is secured to a slide block 218 which is located in a vertical'slideway 219 in the runway 189. A spring barrel 281 in the slide block exerts its force against the runway and thus presses the block down against a bearing block 282 on a crank 293 of a longitudinal rocker shaft 284 carried in bearings 285 in the frame bed 33.
The rocker shaft 284 on each side of the machine extends beyond the end ofthe machine as best shown in Fig. 9 and carries a segment gear 291 (see also Figs. 2 and 4). The two segment gears mesh with racks 292 formed in a transverse slide bar 293 which slides in 'brackets 294secured to the end of the machine. The slide bar is connected by a link 295 to a cam lever 296 mounted on a pivot stud 291 threaded. into the end of the trough extension 61 of the frame bed 33'.' The lever carries a cam roller cam groove 293 of a face cam 299 mounted on the end of the cam shaft 65.
