The "invention proposes anew construction in which one handle which must be gripped by one hand, and locks another handle which must be gripped by the other hand. The first referred to handle is first operated, releasing the second handle which is then operated to withdraw the bolt.
The invention also proposes an arrangement for.immediatelyre-locking the head of the press when it reaches its-raised position and when the operator releases the handles.
For further comprehension of the. invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the followingdescription and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a foot kick press constructed in accordance with this invention.

The safety device for'foot kick presses, in accordance with this invention, is used in conjunction with a press Ill having'the usual vertically slidable head ll, slidable in the frame 12 of the press and controlled with a foot kick lever l3. Further details of the press will not be given in this specification as it forms no part of this invention.
The safety device includes a bolt M slidably mounted forwards and rearwards of and on the frame l2 of the press. This bolt engages a keeper or keeper opening 15 on the slidable head ll of the press for latching said head in its raised 13051". tion. A spring 25 is coaxially mounted on the bolt l4 and acts between the front wall of the casing 24 and a flange 26 mounted on the bolt M. The latch for holding the handle l6 includes said handle I! which is swivelly mounted by a screw 28 or other fastening element. A spring 29 is connected between the handle I! and the-casing 24 and urges the handle I! into its operative position against a pin 30 mounted on the front wall of the casing 24. As-illustrated on the drawing, the head ll of the press is inits locked position. The material to be out or stamped out is engaged between the dies of the press. The operator cannot kick the lever I3 for operating the press because the head of the press is locked. The operator must now grip the handles l6 and IT. Then the ban dle I! must be pivoted to the position indicated by the line l1. This frees the handle l6 which must then be pushed to the position indicated by the dot and dash line Hi. This withdraws the bolt l4, and the operator may now kick the lever I3 to operate the press. It should be noted that it is impossible for the operator to catch his hands in the press since they are busy holding the handles l6 and I1 and are no place near the dies of the press.
After the lever Iii has been kicked and released the operator releases the handles l6 and I1 to move the material being stamped. In combination vwith a foot-kickpresshaving a; slidable head working in' a frame. and controlled with a foot-kick lever, a bolt 'slidably mounted forwards and rearwards of and on said framejand engaging a keeper opening on said head for latching said head in its raised position, a, handle adapted to be gripped with one hand and moved for retracting said bolt, and a latch for holding said handle from beingmoved and having an operator handle adapted to be gripped with the other hand and moved for releasing said first named handle, said first named handle being supported by a supporting element on a I member having an inclined face which limits hinging of the handle on its support, the inner end of said first named handle having an opening engaged over the front end of said'bolt, and fastening elements mounted on the bolt and en gaging slots in the inner end of said handle.
