1 Claim.
The present invention pertains to handles for manual operation of machines as for instance hydraulic pumps. It has for its object to provide a telescopic handle-which can be easily retracted or extended by the operator. tion of the space occupied by the handle and en ables the operator to adjust the leverage when desired.
With this object in view, the handle, according to the present invention, is provided with a base member to be attached to the member to be actuated, as for instance a plunger, and a grip to be seized by the operator and these elements are connected together by at least two tubes slidable in each other, one rigid with said grip and the other rigid with said base member.
According to a feature of the present invention, resilient meanssuch as a springare inserted between said base member and said grip, or between points on the tubes connecting said elements, to force the handle into its extended position.
According to a further-feature, locking means are provided which will maintain the handle in its retracted position against the force of said spring. These locking means are adapted to be engaged by a slight rotary motion of the grip.
Further features may be gathered from the following detailed description of an embodiment of the present invention given by way of example and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal cross section of a handle according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is an elevational view of Figure l, as viewed from the right hand side of the drawing;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the same handle attached to the plunger of a hydraulic pump.
In Figure 1 reference numerals I and. 2 designate the base member and the grip of the handle, respectively. Grip 2 is mounted on a plug 3 supported by a pin 4. From plug 3 two tubes 5 and 6, rigid with the same, extend toward member I. A tube 1, bolted at 8 to member I, extends toward grip 2 and slidably engages tube 5. At its free end, tube 1 carries a collar 9 slidably engaging tube 6.
A spring 10 is provided between projections H rigid with member 1 and retainers l2 and l2a rigid with tube 6.
A pin l3 rigid with tube 5 is carried in the annular socket [2, so that the end faces of the pin and the outer face of the socket slidably engages the inner surface of tube 1.
The provision of collar 9, pin 13 and sockets This permits reduc I2 and 12a insures properspacing between tubes 6 and l at all times. j 1 7 Another pin l4 rigid with tube 1 and travers ing the projections of base member I and tube 6, is provided for the purpose of locking the handle in its retracted position.
Figure 2 shows a slot l5 provided in tube 6. Both figures show the handle in its locked position in which pin I4 is engaged in notched recess ll of slot 15. A corresponding slot and notched recess are, of course, provided in the radially opposite side of tube 6 to accommodate the other end of pin 14, respectively. By a slight turn of grip 2, pin M can be disengaged, whereby tube 6 is set free to move axially, so that spring H) can push the handle into its extended position. After the handle has been used in its extended position, the operator will push the grip home until pin l4 registers with recess H. A slight turn of grip 2 in the opposite direction will then lock the handle against extension by the action of spring Hi.
It is an advantageous feature of the locking arrangement that the turning of grip 2, necessary to disengage pin M from recess l1, subjects spring ID to a torque, because this torque will assist during the return movement to bring pin l4 back into its locked position.
Handles according to the present invention may be considerably longer in their extended than in their retracted position. In such case, tube 6 will come out of contact with pin 14. The afore-mentioned torque of spring I0 may then cause tube 6 to turn back into the radial position which it occupies when the handle is locked. Upon returning the handle to the retracted position the operator will then have to turn grip 2 until pin H registers with slot l5 before the handle can be pushed home completely. This turn will reproduce the torque of spring I0 which assists placing the handle in its locked position. To facilitate the registering of pin M with slot l5 when the handle is retracted, it is advantageous to widen a portion of said slot near the end of tube 6 and also to shape the end of tube 6 so that the cam face will ride on the pin I 4 and turn the tube 6 so that the slot is over the pin.
Figure 3 illustrates a handle according to the present invention pivotally attached at It! and having a plunger 20 of a hydraulic pump :pivotally afiixed to it at IS, the considerable extension of which handles, according to the present invention are capable of making it possible to attach the base member directly to the member to the handle out of the way and yet easily extended;
to an operative position. 7, g
The foregoing description is not intended to limit the present invention which extends to all changes, modifications and equivalents comprehended within the scope of the appended claim. .What is claimed is:
Telescopic handle for hand actuated machines which comprises a grip to be seized by the operator, a base member to be directly connected to theelement of said machine which is to be actuated and adapted 'to transmit to the same the forces exerted on said grip, said grip and said base member being connected together by three con said slots adapted to receive said second-mem' centric tubes, the outer and inner of said tubes being rigid with said grip, the intermediary tube being rigid with said base member 'and adapted to engage slidably said outer tube, a collar interposed between the end of Said intermediary tube and said inner tube, said collar being rigid with said intermediary tube and slid'ably engaging said inner tube, a pin carried in sockets formed by, an outwardly recessed portion of said inner tube at a point distant from said base member, said pin and said sockets being rigid with said inner tube and slidably engaging said intermediary tube, a spring interposed between a portioniof said base member and said sockets, a second pin rigid with said intermediary tube, -two' slots in said "inner tube adapted to'slidably receive said second mentioned pin, and two notchedrecessed portions in tioned pin whenever the same registers with said recessed portions and said handleisturned;
