No. 233,182. Patented Oct. 12, 1880.
,PEfF-RS. PNOTO-LITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES ASKEW, OF MADISON, WISCONSIN.
MACHINE FOR GRINDING MOWER AND REAPER KNIVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,182, dated October 12, 1880.
Application filed J one 11, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES ASKEW, of Madison, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Grinding Sickle- Bars of Reapers and Mowers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a novel construction of a rest and carrier for the sickle-bar and combination and arrangement thereof with relation to the grindstone, whereby provision is made for adjusting the sickle-bar to the grinding-surface, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of an apparatus embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a top view. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the frame or table which supports the working parts. B is a standard, in the upper part of which is journaled ahorizontal shaft, C, carrying at one end a grindstone, D, and provided at the other end with a crank, e, for turning it.
F is a flat bar, one end of which is pivoted to the table A. The other end of the bar F is provided with a slot, f. In this slot f works the headed shank g of a standard, G, which (ModeL) forms a rest for the sickle-bar carrier. This carrier consists of a bar, H, connected to the standard G by a jointed shank, h. provided with a thumb-screw, J.
The carrier H is provided with clamps K, furnished with set-screws L for holding the sicklebar M in place. The clamps K are arranged to slide on the bar H so as to accommodate sickles of difi'erent lengths, and they are provided with keys or wedges n for tightening them in place on the carrier.
By means of the jointed shank h and the slot in the bar F the carrier H may be moved up to or away from the grindstone,or turned in any suitable position at the pleasure of the operator.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination and arrangement, with relation to the table A and grindstone- D, ofthe pivoted slotted bar F, standard G, jointed shank h, and carrier H, as herein shown and described.
CHARLES ASKEW.
