This invention relates to a'pa'cking for furniture, designed to take the Weight of the furniture 'ona base or frame which can be attached to =cross pieces'of the furniture sothat the weight will not rest on the legs and which will give a foundation and rigid support for a corrugated board cover, without such cover having to take any of the weight and without the cover having to be nailed to any part of the furniture or to any piece which is directly attached to the furniture. The base consists of an outside frame I consisting preferably of four pieces of lumber of appropriate Weight, fastened with edges up into a rectangular frame of greater area than the floor space covered by the furniture. Two boards 2 are nailed across the top of this frame, set inward from the frame edges so that the furniture cross pieces will rest thereon inside the legs of the article, such as the chair 3, to be packed, and high enough to keep the feet off the floor,

as shown in Figure 4. The furniture is fastened part,or in other suitable manner so as not to impair the appearance of the furniture.

Referring now particularly to Figure 2, it will be seen that the cover, which is preferably made of corrugated or other box board of suitable weight, consists of three pieces in all, namely two rectangular side panels 5, only one of which is visible in Figures 2 and 3, but both of which are seen in Figure 5, and a cover: which is divided by a number of folds into several different panels The cover is preferably, although not necessarily, made of a unitary blank, and divided into panels along folding lines as indicated by clotted lines in Figure 5, thus forming a front II, lower top I2, upper front I3,'upper top I4, and back I 5,.following one another and all of the same on. At the box factory, the side panels 5 are stitched to the laps 22 as shown in Figure 5, by lines of stitching 32, and the structure is then laid flat but can be turned down along the fold lines 32 when the corrugated board structure is applied to the frame I, as shown in Figure 2.

To apply the cover, after the furniture piece 3 has been placed on the cross bars 2 and secured thereto, the side pieces 5 and their attaching flaps 22 are turned down along the lines 32, and the side pieces 5 nailed as at 3'! to the frame I. Thus the lower top I2 is across the top of the arms of the chair; in order to apply it thepanel I3 has been bent up along the line I1, the panel I4 has been folded back along the line I8, and the front and back panels II and I5 turned down along the lines I9 and I6 respectively, after which they are nailed as at 38 to the frame I. 23 and 24 are successively turned into the side plane to close the openings between the edges l3, l4 and I5 above the sides 5. The laps 25 are folded forward over 24 and taped as at 42 and 43.

Itwill be appreciated that the principles of this invention may be applied in modified forms, differences in details and in particulars of shape and of application being made as may be necessary to fit particular items being packed, the scope of the invention being determined by th following claims.

I claim:

A furniture package comprisinga furniture support and a cover, said support comprising a rigid, closed, rectangular frame of lumber or the like adapted to rest on a floor and having an external upright perimeter, said frame enclosing the furniture legs, cross pieces attached to said frame withtheir upper surfaces higher above the floorthan the downward extent of the furniture legs belowfurniture cross members, said cross pieces being positioned inwardly of the furniture legs and thereby adapted to support furniture by eross'membe'rs orthe furniture resting thereon; and a cover of corrugated board or the like including upstanding panels supported only by being'fastened at their bottomsaround the external uprightperimeter of said frame, with transverse panels of corrugatedv board or the like supported thereby and forming with said upstanding panels a complete cover for the packed furniture but carried independently of such furniture.

A package fora chair, davenport orv the like, comprising a four-sided wood frame with sides placed edge up, bars on said frame and under the lower horizontal elements of the furniture at a height to hold the furniture legs off the floor, and a boxboard cover comprising four vertical panels nailed to the corresponding sides of said frame, said cover also comprising a panel secured at its edges to three of said vertical panels and horizontally disposed over the arms of the fumiture, with a panel rising from the rear of said horizontal panel to the height of the furniture back, joined by a horizontal'panel disposed over said back, said last-named horizontal panel be- 1. A package for furniture of the seat and back type comprising a rigid four-sided frame of a size to enclose the legs of the furniture and having portions engageable with the furniture between the legs thereof to support the same with the legs clear of the floor, in combination with a cover composed entirely of boxboard and comprisinz two flat side panels attached at their lower edles to opposite sides of said frame and extending the full length of said sides, a back panel attached at its lower edge to the rear side of the frame and extending'the full length thereof, said'rear panel being higher than the side panels. a top panel extending forwardly from the upper also of the back panel, an upper front panel extending downwardly from the top panel, a seat covering panel extending forwardly from the upper front panel and resting upon the {upper edges of the side panels, and a lower front panel extending down from the forward edge of the seat coveringpanel and: secured at its lower edge to the forward side of said frame, said back panel having end laps extending the full height thereof and secured to the side panels, said top and upper front panels having endlaps'secured to one another and to the laps of the rear panel, said seat covering panel and said lower front panel having laps overlyingfthe upper and forward edge portions of said side panels.
