Description

D. W. SHOUDY, Thill Coupling.
Patented Oct. 12,1880.
Willi d alumn l 1 129105011 @MWX 7 ETER PHOTO-LITHOGHAPHER. WASHINGTON. u
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL W. SHOUDY, OF WEST PAW PAW, ILLINOIS.
THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 233,119, dated October 12. 1880,
Application filed February 20, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL W. SHoUDY, of West Paw Paw, in the county of Lee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thill-Oouplings and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of myimproved thillcoupling. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view, and Fig. 4 is a perspective View, of the end of thill detached from its coupling.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention has relation to shaft or thill couplings for buggies and other vehicles and it consists of the combination and arrangeinentot'parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings hereto annexed, B represents the coupling-box, which is made in one piece, with a rearwardly-projecting arm, A, by means of which it is secured upon the front axle by clips. Box B has an oblique or inclined slot, b, having a circular enlargement, a, at its lower end.
0 is the tongue or thill, as the case may be, the rear end of which is bifurcated, as shown at c c, the arms 0 c terminating in circular disks or heads d d, which are united by a cylindrical cross-piece, D, which will fit into the circular or cylindrical enlargement or of the slot or opening I).
c is a holding-pin hung by an eye thereon and a staple, 6, attached to the tongue or thill 0 so as to depend from the latter when in its horizontal position, and adapted, when the tongue or thill is elevated past the notch or groovefin the box B of the coupling, tobe inserted at its free or pointed end into said groove f, and thus effect the holding of the thill in the elevated position indicated in dotted lines in Fig: 1, which is desirable when the vehicle is not in use.
To couple the thill it is held in the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the. head 0 c D is inserted sidewise into the slot b and opening a, after which the shaft is dropped into its normal position, which locks it. To uncouple it, this operation is simply reversed.
This coupling is exceedingly strong and durable, as it consists of very few and simple parts, and is not liable to wear out or to get out of order.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a thill-coupling, the combination, with the coupling-box B, having the peripheral notch or groove f, of the tongue or thill O, having the suspended pointed pin 6, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL W. SHOUDY.
