Application November 19, 1942, Serial No. 466,182 Claims. (0]. 24-158) This invention relates to a safety catch or lock for bar pins of brooches, badges, and the like.
The relative inexpensiveness of many brooches, badges, and similar ornaments requires that the attaching structures thereof be of maximum simplicity while at the same time being efiicient in their intended uses.
While safety locks or catches for bar pins are well known and of diversified forms, prior structures of this general character-such, for example, as disclosed in the patents to G. H. Tilford, No. 1,274,630, August 6, 1918; C. A. Goozey, No. 1,321,621, November 11, 1919; and J. Pejchar, No. 1,410,592, March 28,- 1922-failed to meet the requirements of maximum simplicity and would accordingly not be well adapted to the inexpensive ornament structures even though they may be eflicient in operation.
It is accordingly a primary object of this invention to provide an improved safety catch or look for bar pins which overcomes this particular objection to such prior constructions.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a safety catch or lock for bar pins which comprises only two highly simple, relatively mov-. able parts whereby it is inexpensive of 'manufacture and due to its marked simplicity Will not be liable to become inoperative even after a long period of use.
- A still further object of thisinvention is the provision of a safety which is capable of being expeditiously assembled and united with the body portion of a brooch, badge, or the like. v

Referring now in detail to the drawing, B designates a. brooch, badge, or like ornament havinga bar pin P which is pivotally connected at the butt end thereof by means of a suitable pivot may desirably be of the character disclosed in my co-pending application Serial No. 466,181 filed November 19, 1942. The penetrating end of the pin P cooperates with a safety catch or lock L which forms the subjectmatter of this application.
The safety catch or lock L includes a catch member ID and a cooperating locking member I I. The catch member ID is of generally rectangular form of moderate thickness and is adapted catch or lock for bar pins rigidly secured to the approximate position to be soldered or otherwise brooch or badge B in the illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The catch member I ll is'provided with an arcuate pin-receiving slot l2 which, as shown, enters through one edge thereof and terminates in a rounded closed end centrally of and adjacent the top of the catch member.
The locking member I I is of generally box configuration open at the bottom and, having a closed top I 3, opposed solid side walls I4 and I5 and opposed walls l6 at right angles to walls I and I4. Each wall I 6 is provided with a slot l1 opening through the bottom'edge of the wall and terminating in a rounded closed end for conformity with the closed end of catch slot l2 when the locking member is in closed position, as in Fig. 6.
The locking member is so relatively proportioned with respect to the catch member that the side walls I, I 5 and I6 engage the corresponding vertical walls of the catch member, preferably under more or less friction, and the wall ii of the locking member terminates in a lug I 8 which, as shown in Fig. 4, is, prior to assembly of the catch and locking members, coplanular with the wall l5 and which, after assembly, is adapted to be bent inwardly of the open end of slot' I! for alternate engagement with the upper and lower walls of the slot. as is clearly shown inli'igs. 5 and 6.
As lndicatedln ig. 5, the locking member II is capable of being drawn upwardly on the catch member Ill until lug ll the top wall of slot II, in which position the slots l2 and II are in communication and in which position the pin P may readily enter slot. ll and be drawn to the rounded closed end thereof to the position in with means carried by said After thus having admitted the pin into the slot of the catch member, the locking member is drawn downwardly until lug l8 engages the lower wall of slot l2, in which position the entrance to the catch member slot I2 is closed and the pin accordingly locked against inadvertent displacement from within the catch member slot.
It will be seen that the improved safety catch or look includes only two structural elements and that such elements are exceptionally simple in structure, whereby the complete device is capable of being manufactured at low cost, is durable, efficient, in operation, and is not liable to become inoperative as is the case with prior complicated devices of this general character.
While I'have disclosed but a single specific embodiment of my invention, such is to be considered as illustrative only, and not restrictive, the
scope of the invention being defined in the sub-.

What I claim and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent is:
1. A safety catch or look for bar pins com prising a catch member of generally rectangular form in side elevation, a curved pin receiving slot in said member opening through one edge thereof and having a rounded closed end, and a locking member of generally box-like formation having an open end slidably mounted on said catch member, opposed side walls of said locking member havingl-aterally alined slots opening through the open end of the locking member, the open ends of'said last slots communicating-with said first slot in one position of said locking member on said catch member, and the closed ends of all of said slots being in lateral registry in another position of said locking member on said catch member.
2. The structure according to claim 1, together locking'lmember and engageable with opposed walls of said first slot member on said catch member in each of said positions.

The structure according to claim 3, together with means for limiting the movement of said locking member to said position, said means further limiting movement of said locking member to another position in which said open ends are out of communication and said rounded closed ends of all of said slots are in transverse registry.
5. In a device of the character described, a catch member secured to a brooch or and extending vertically above same, an upwardly directed slot in said member opening through one edge thereof, a locking member vertically sildable on said catch member and having laterally alined vertical slots intersecting said first slot at opposite sides thereof and having open lower ends, and a lug carried by said locking member'engageable with the upper and lower walls of said first slot for limiting movement of said locking member on said catch member to positions in which the open ends of all of said slots are in and out of communication respec- 40 tively.
