A seal is constantly provided between the inner depending flange l8 and the innersides of the cup-shaped member in that the liquids must pass over the sides of the cup-shaped member 20 to reach the straining member liland the drain line '1. After the liquid reaches the straining member ID, the sediment is strained therefrom and the water passes laterally outwardly therefrom and passes through the aperture 6 to the drain line I. Liquids such as oil, gasoline and other liquids lighter than water remain suspended on the top surface of the water in the drain. The outer drain line is of a height which approaches the top row of apertures II in the straining member ID, and it is, therefore, necessary to have the liquid in the drain at a greater head than that of the drain line in order vided between th cup-shaped member 28 and the depending flange 19. It will be evident that at this point, a double seal is provided, one in the inner and top portion of the cup-shaped member and the other in the outer and lower portion of the cup-shaped member. It will further be seen that a dead air space at this time exists between the two seals. With the double seal and the dead air space, the water entering the drain will be retarded to such an extent that it will be noted by the attendant or other person in the vicinity of the drain. Flooding of the area surrounding thesurface of the drain is preventedbecause upon a sufficient head being present above the grate 2|, water will be forced through the double seal and dead air space. An aperture 22 may be provided in the upper cylindrical member I to drain off the intercepted oil, gasoline or the like.
It will be evident that I have provided a drain which indicates the filling of a sediment bucket in a drain and further indicates a pre-determined head of oil, gasoline or the like on the surface of the water in the drain, the said drain being so constructed that no flooding of the area of the surface of the drain will take place.

unperforated upperportion and having outwardly flared supporting membersseated on said seating surface on said outer member, a centrally-apertured member disposed in the upper portion of said outer member having an inner depending cylindrical flange and an outer depending cylindrical flange extendingbelow said inner flange, and a. cup-shapedmember disposed below said inner flange having the sides thereof extending above theilowermostportion of said inner flange and an outlet chamber extending upwardly and outwardly from said outlet in said outer member to a point in substantially the same horizontal planewith the lower side of said outer de- Pending flange.
5. In a surface drain, as set forthin claim 4, wherein a grate is disposed on said'centrallyapertured member. q

In a surface drain, in combination, an outer cylindrical member having aseatin surface on the top portion thereof and an outlet in the lower portion thereof, an outlet pipe leading upwardly from said outlet, a perforated straining member supported on said seating surface on said outer member in spaced relationship thereto, a centrally-apertured member supported ,by said straining member having an inner depending annular flange and an outer depending annular flange extending below said inner flange, an outlet chamber extending from said outlet in said outer member upwardly andoutwardly at a point in substantially the same horizontal plane with the lower edge of said outer dependin flange, and a cup-shaped membe disposed under said "centrally-apertured' member and having its sides extending above the lowermost portion of said inner flange.

In a surface drain, in combination, an outer cylindrical member having an inlet and an outlet in the lower portion thereof and an aperture for draining off intercepted material, an outlet pipe leading upwardly from said outlet, a perforated straining 'member supported in said cylindrical member, a centrally-apertured member supported above said straining member having an inner depending flange and an outer depending flange extending below said inner flange, an outlet chamber extending upwardly and outwardly from said outlet in said outer member at a point in substantially a horizontal plane with the lower edge of said outer depending flange, and a cup-shaped member disposed under and around said inner flange and having its sides extending above the lowermost portion of said inner flange.

In a surface drain,-in combination, an outer cylindrical member having an inlet and an outlet in the lower portion thereof, an outlet pipe leading upwardly from said outlet, a perforated straining member supported thereon, a centrallyapertured member above said straining member having an inner depending flange and an outer depending flange extending below said inner flange, an outlet chamber extending upwardly and outwardly from said outlet in said outlet member at a point in substantially the same horizontal plane as the lower edge of said outer depending flange, and a cup-shaped member disposed under and around said inner flangehaving its sides extending above the lowermost portion of said inner flange, said inner flange and the inner side of said cup-shaped member and said outer flange and the lower portion of said cup-shaped member providing a double seal when the level of the liquid of said drain extends above the lowermost portion of said outer flange.
