2 Claims.
This invention relates to a combined chair and bed section.
It is an object of the invention to provide a novel type of chair which is of such construction that it may be readily converted into a section of a bed so that when a number of the chairs, preferably three, are assembled in side by side relation they may be readily converted into a bed.
With the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, arrangement of parts and use, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 shows aside elevation.
Figure 2 shows a rear view partly in section.
Figure 3 shows a side elevation with the back rest brought into horizontal position.
Figure 4 shows a side view of another embodiment in extended position.
Figure 5 shows a perspective view of a plurality of the chairs assembled preparatory to converting them into a bed and Figure 6 shows a plan view of the assembly formed into a bed and partly broken away.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate the same parts in each of the figures. The numerals l, I designate the side legs of the chair, which are spaced apart and which ar provided with the inside longitudinal grooves 2,
Secured to the rear end of each leg, at the top, are the side lugs 3, 3 and opposite said lugs the rear ends of the legs have the cut-away portions 4 as more accurately shown in Figure, 3 thus providing the bearing faces 5, 5.
Numeral '6 designates the back rest frame as a whole, which frame has the side members 1, 1 whose lower endsare fitted into the spaces 4 between the corresponding lugs 3 and their oppos ing faces 5 as shown in Figure 1.
Each side memberl has a longitudinal slot 8 and fitted through said slots are the bearing pins 9 whose inner ends are anchored to the cushion support I0. This cushion support is mounted n the l I n s pports the seat cushion ll The back rest frame 6 will, as above explained, be held in an upright position to support the back rest cushion l2.
At its rear the seat cushion support I is cut away at each side providing the side spaces at 13.
The frame 6 may be pulled upwardly until the lower ends of the side member 1 clear the upper ends of the faces and may then be swung spaces l3 into position shown in Figure 3 with the backrest cushion 12 in horizontal position and in adjacent relation with the seat cushion l l. Between the legs I, I there is an extensible support I4, preferably box-like in form whose sides have the external ribs l5, [5 arranged to slide in grooves 2. This support is approximate- 1y of the same length as the length of the legs I.
Before the back rest frame is lowered into horizontal position the support l4 should be pulled out rearwardly, as shown in Figur 3. At its outer end it has the legs I 6, IE to support it when in extended position and the back rest frame, when brought into horizontal position, as above explained, will rest on the Support M as shown in Figure 3.
This support I4 is box-like in formand may be used to contain bed clothing or the like.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figure 4 the back rest frame 6a has its side member la permanently secured to the legs I a. The support It is mounted to be pulled forwardly also, as shown in Figure 4 and its forward end is supported by the leg Ilia. In other respects this construction illustratedin Figure 4 is the same as that shown in Figure 2 and when the support It is extended forwardly the back rest cushion l2 may be supported thereon. I
In both forms the support I 4 may have a strong fabric covering l1 whose outer ends and side margins are attached to the upper margins of the support in any preferred manner so that they may be detached for access to the interior of the support. This covering [1 forms an additional support for the back rest cushion l2 when the latter is mounted thereon for assembly into a bed such as shown in Figure 4. i
The drawings and description are illustrative merely while the broad principle of the invention will be defined by the appended claims.
' What I claimis:
1. A combined chair and bed section comprising side legs spaced apart, a lug secured to the" rear end of each leg at the top, the rear ends of the legs having cut-away portions opposite said lugs, providing bearing faces, a back rest frame having side members whose lower ends are adapted to be fitted into said spaces between the corresponding lugs and the opposing bearing faces, a cushion support mounted on said legs, said support being out away at each side, at the rear, providing side spaces, each side member being provided with a longitudinal slot, bearing pins fitted through said slots and whose inner ends are anchored to the cushion support, said slots being of a length to allow the back rest frame to be moved upwardly until the lower ends of the side members clear said bearing faces and to allow the back rest frame to be moved to horizontal position, said frame when in horizontal position being movable inwardly to seat the ends of the side members in said side spaces, cushions on th cushion support and on the back rest frame, respectively. 7
2. A combined chair and bed section comprising side legs spaced apart, a lug secured to the rear end of each leg at the top, the rear ends of the legs having cut-away portions opposite said lugs, providing bearing faces, a back rest frame having side members whose lower ends are adapted to be fitted into said spaces between the corresponding lugs and the opposing bearing faces, a cushion support mounted on said legs, said support being cut away at each side, at the rear, providing side spaces, each side member being provided with a longitudinal slot, bearing pins fitted through said slots and whose inner ends are anchored to the cushion support, said slots being of a length to allow the back rest frame to be moved upwardly until the lower ends of the side members clear said bearing faces and to allow the back rest frame to be moved to horizontal position, said frame when horizontal position being movable inwardly to seat the ends of the side members in said side spaces, cushions on the cushion support and on the back rest 'frame, respectively, and an extensible support mounted between the side legs and movable into extended position to support the back rest frame when the latter is'in horizontal position.
