Patented Sept. 14, 1943 CONVERTIBLE BATHING APPARATUS y Maxwell H. Bloomberg, Pittsburgh, Pa. l
Application November 6, 1941, serial No. 418,031)` y (ol. 5.491)
' 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to newl and useful improvements in bathing apparatus designed primarily for use by bedridden patients, infants, and the like and has for its primary object to provide a shallow open tank having a bottom /coextensive with a mattress on which the tank is positioned and adapted to contain a quantity of water for use in bathing purposes, the side wallsv of the tank being constructed of live rubber and capable `of being folded downwardly along the sides of the mattress, when not in use as a bathing apparatus, to provide a protective cover for the mattress.
An important object of the present invention i is to provide abathing apparatus ofthis chary acteradapted to be arranged in bathing position without necessitating removal of the patientfrom the mattress.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable inuse, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended. f
Other objects and advantages reside in the Vdetails `of construction as more fullyhereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings f forming part hereof,
wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the tank in position on a mattress ready for use as a Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional View.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of one corner of the device. 'f
Figure 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view of ja corner of the tank showing the reinforcing corner rib.
Figure5 isy a' perspective form of the invention, and y Figure 6 is ar transverse sectional View@ thereof. Referring now to ythe drawings in detaily and with particular reference to Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, the numeral 5r designates theshallow rubber tank or bathtub which includes a bottom 6 which i. V Y
is coextensive with a mattress 1 `on which the tank 4 is positioned?, the tank including upstanding walls 8, the bottom 6 and `walls 8 being constructed of live rubber. n
I A reinforcing beading` 9 is formed around the bottom. edges ofthe walls and a beading lor is likewise formed around the upper` edges thereof. The corners are likewise formed with a vertical rib II `capable of providing suicient strength to view of a modified y the walls to maintain the same in an upstanding y position when the tank. is filled with a supply of water.
` When the tank is not desired for use'for bathing purposes, the side walls 8 are adapted to be folded downwardly k'along thesides of the mattress f 1 as shown by the dottedllines in ,Figure 21 of the drawings, andthe device is then retained on the mattress and used` as aprotective cover therefor.V
Under such circumstances the protective cover may be covered by the usual sheet or other bed clothing and, in using the device forbathfpurposes, it is only necessary that the sheet *for other bedclothing be removed and the side walls 8 moved into their upstanding position, `as shown f by the full lines in Figure 2, whereupon thevdevice is ready for` use for bathing the patient without necessitating the removal bed.
` Projecting from one lower corner of the tank is a flexible rubber tube vI2 adaptedv to drain the contents of the tank into a suitable receptacle, the inner end of the tube being adapted toreceiveA a plug I3 'and the outerportionof the tube may be provided with a. conventional `form of clamp I4 y adapted to cut off the flow of water therethrough in the usual manner. f
In the form of the invention illustratedin Figures 5 and 6 ofthe drawings, the mattress I5 is constructed of rubber and to the upper surface f thereof the walls I6 of the tank f are integrally molded, the tank thus being formed as an integral` part of the mattress. In this form of the invention the drain tube I1 is-'likewise provided atA one i lower corner of the wall I6 andthe walls `are provided at their upper edges with a beading and arey provided at their corners with the vertical reinforcing ribs as ,heretoforeexplained.`
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the .invention provides convenient means for bathing bedridden patients without the necessity of removing the patient'from the bed and the device is also adapted forusein the treatment ofincon-v tinent patients by providing a protector andcon- -tainer carried by the bed from which the excretions may be drained. f f
It is believed the 'details of construction and manner of use of the device will be readily under'- stood from ktheforegolng Without further detailed explanation.l v` 1 Having thus described the invention what I claimis:` f
A Y'mattress including ya krubber top and continuous Lwall of sheet rubber integral with the top and rising from the edgesof the mattressand adapted for folding into a downwardly extending position with respect 'to the mattress to form a cover surrounding the sidesof the mattress.
