Inventor w w 1 Z 2 m fig n S 0 2 W w m 059. a m a Patented Aug. 24, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,327,816 TOILET 'PAPER ROLL HOLDER, Vernon Fiblso-n, Zumbrcta,Minn; v Application April 19, 1943,.se1-iai No. 483,924 I I V 3 Claims. (oL grz -s aay 1 The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in toilet paper roll holders,
and has for one of its important objects to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character comprising novel means whereby the strip or web of paper may be expeditiously drawn from the roll and torn off.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a holder of the aforementioned character wherein the paper will be substantially concealed from view.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a toilet paper roll holder of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact, attractive in appearance, sanitary, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a toilet paper roll holder constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view in vertical section through the device with the lower portion of the bracket broken away.
Figure 3 is a view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a top plan View of the bracket.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary View in front elevation of the lower portion of the device.
Figure 6 is a detail view in bottom plan of the core.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a metallic supporting bracket which is designated generally by the reference number I. The bracket I includes a vertical attaching leg 2 having openings therein accommodating securing elements 3 for mounting said bracket on a support 4. Projecting from the upper end of the attaching leg 2 is an integral horizontal arm '5. A brace 6 extends between the members 2 and 5.
The arm 5 of the bracket I includes adownwardly offset intermediate portion 1. The portion 'I accommodates a metallic cross bar 8 which is mounted on the arm 5. Upstanding lugs or the like 9 are provided on the members 5 and 8.
At" the points where they cross, the members 5 and 8 areapertured to accommodate a vertical spindle II);- In the embodiment shown, a
collar II in the' form of a nutis fixed on the lower portion of the spindle Ill and rests on the member 8. A thumb nut I2 is threaded on the lower end portion of the spindle I0 and engaged beneath the portion I of the member 5 for firmly securing said spindle in position in conjunction with the collar II.
A core I3 of wood or other suitable material is rotatably and removably mounted on the spindle ID. The core I3 has formed therein a bore I4 which accommodates the spindle I9. Fixed on the lower end of the core I3 is a head I5 in the form of a metallic diskwhich rests on the collar II. Thus, the collar II functions as a thrust bearing for the core I3.
The upstanding lugs 9 receive therebetween and retain on the bracket I an inverted, substantially cup-shaped, removable cover I6. The cover I6, which is open at its lower end, comprises a metallic cylinder I1 and a substantially dome-shaped top I8. The cylinder I1 is vertically slit for providing a slot I9. On one of the vertical walls of the slot I9 the cylinder H has formed integrally therewith an outturned, toothed tearing lip or flange 2|]. It will be observed that one of the upstanding lugs 9 is engaged behind the tearing lip 29 for retaining the cover II against rotation on the bracket I when the paper to be torn off is pulled against said lip.
It is thought that the manner in which the device functions will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, a roll of toilet paper, as at 2!, may be expeditiously mounted on the core I3 by simply removing the cover I6 from the bracket I. When the cover I9 is replaced, the strip of paper is engaged in the slot I9 in a manner to leave the end portion thereof exposed. Of course, to remove the paper from the roll, said paper is pulled outwardly through the slot I9, said roll turning freely on the spindle II) with the core I3. The paper is then conveniently torn off at the desired length by pulling the strip across the toothed edge of the lip 20.
It is believed that the many advantages of a toilet paper roll holder constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and are rangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A toilet paper roll holder comprising a bracket including a horizontal arm, means for mounting said arm on a support, a cross member on the arm, upstanding lugs on the cross member and the arm, a vertical spindl on the bracket, an inverted, substantially cup-shaped cover removably mounted on the bracket and engaged between the lugs, and a core, for receiving a roll of paper, rotatably mounted on the spindle, the cover having a vertical slot therein for the passage of the paper.
2. A toilet paper roll holder comprising a bracket including a vertical leg for attachment to a support and an integral arm projecting horizontally from the upper end of the leg, a brace extending between the leg and the arm, said arm including a downwardly offset intermediate portion, a cross bar mounted onsaid intermediate portion of the arm, saidcross bar. and
the arm having registeringopenings therein, upstanding lugs on the crossbar and the arm, a
vertical spindle secured in the registering openings, said spindle including a collar engaged with the cross bar, a core rotatably mounted on the spindle, said core including a flat head on its lower end resting on the collar, said core for receiving a roll of paper, and a cover removably mounted on the bracket between the lugs, said cover having a vertical slot therein for the passage of the paper.
3. A toilet, paper roll holder comprising a bracket including a horizontal arm, a vertical spindle, for receiving a roll of paper, rising from the arm, a cover removably mounted on the arm,
said cover including a vertical cylinder open at against rotation in one direction on the'arm. r
