CHARLES JENKINS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO ALFRED B. JENKINS, OF SAME PLACE.
GAG E-COC K.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,724, dated September 28, 1880.
(No model.)
1' all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES JENKINS, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvementin GageCooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the follow-' in g-described improvement in gage-cocks, reference being had to the accompanying draw- [0 ings, forming a part of this specification, in
explaining its nature, in which-- Figure 1 is a vertical section illustrating the application of my invention to a gage-cock known as the compression gage-cock. Fig.
I 5 2 is also a vertical section, representing the handle and its spindle removed and the rod in use. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section of a ball gage-cock constructed to employ my invention.
It is very desirable to provide a gage-cock with means whereby the steam or water way of the cock may be easily cleansed or freed from obstructions without opening the cock, and my invention relates to mechanism for accomplishing this purpose.
A represents the steam or water way of the cock; B the handle. a is the stationary seat of the cock, and a is the movable seat or valve, which, preferably, should consist of an 0 elastic packing, or packing which is elastic at steam-temperature. a is a metallic cup for holding the packing.
G is a screw-stem, which screws in the neck 0 of the cock. D is a handle, which is pro-' 3 5 vided with the projection or nub cl, which enters a recess, (1, corresponding in shape in the end of the screw-stem, and which may also be provided with the shoulder (1 The packing, its cup, the handle, and its 40 stem are fastened together by the rod Gr, which is enlarged upon its inner end, and is pro vided with a screw-thread upon its outer end, and by the nut g, which screws upon the said ..threacl.
The rod G is used not only for the purpose of holding the parts, as above stated, but also for the purpose of removing obstructions from the steam or water way A, and when thus employed the nut g is removed. The handle B and spindle I), when employed, are re- 5: moved, and the rod reciprocated in the steamway without otherwise disturbing the cock and without opening it.
When the packing a is used it serves as a stuffing-box in preventing the steam from cs caping while the rod is being used to clean the steam or water way.
In lieu of the construction shown in Fig. l, which is substantially that of a compressioncook, the construction shown in Fig. 3, known as the ball gage-cock construction, may be employed with the modifications herein mentioned.
In lieu of the packing a any suitable stuffing-box or packing may be employed for pre- 6 5 venting the escape of steam While the rod is being reciprocated, and the cup for holding the packing may be fastened in any desirable Way to the end of the stem C, or may be formed therein. The advantages of this construction are manifest.
Of course the clearing-rod Gr may be extended beyond the end of the handle sufficiently to be operated without removing the handle, that the same need not be employed for the purpose of fastening the handle to the disk-holding devices, and that the handle may be secured by independent means to them, the rod being used merely for the purpose of clearing the passage, and being supported by the disk-holding devices and the handle, of either, when not in use.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. A steam gage-cock provided with a rod, G, adapted to be used alternately either for fastening the handle of the valve-holding devices or for clearing the steamway, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In a gage-cock, the combination of a detachable handle or handle and spindle, devices for holding the valve to its seat, and the rod G, for fastening the handle to the said valve-holding devices, and adapted to be used 5 in clearing the passage C, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a gage-cock, a rod,
G, for clearing the steamway, adapted to be substantially as and for the purposes deoperated upon the removal of the handle, substantially as and for the purposes described.
4. The combination of a gage-cock with a 5 rod, G, for clearing the passage, supported Without the passage when not in use by the valve-holding devices and handle, or either,
scribed.
CHARLES JENKINS.
