H. D PURSELL. Window Frame Pocket.
No. 232,616. Patented Sept. 28,1880.
7742!. V 2&2
NITED STATES ATENT muons WINDOW-FRAME POCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,616, dated September 28, 1880.
Application filed July 26, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
' Fayette and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Window-Frame-Pocket Fixtures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in box-windo w-frame-pocket fixtures; and it consists inmaking an opening through the inner side of the frame, so as to give ready access to the pocket, in which the weight attached to the window-sash moves up and down, so that should the weight at anytime becomefastened or detached from the cord the cover of this opening can be readily removed and the weight loosened or again fastened to its cord without having to remove any other part of the window-frame, and in securing an L-shaped plate, which is provided with a suitable screw-bolt, to the said opening in the frame, anda recessed plate to the cover of the opening, and screwing the thumb-nut upon the screw, so that .when the cover is secured in position the nut will be held in the recess, so as not to be in the way of the movement of the window-sash.
It further consists in the arrangement and combination of parts, which will be more fully described hereinafter, whereby the cover to the opening, which is made through the frame, so as to give access to the weight, is securely and yet detachably fastened in position without in any manner interfering with the working of the sash or marring the appearance of the windew-frame.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of myinvention, showing the cover in position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the cover.
A represents the window-frame, which has an opening made through it at its lower end, so as to give readyacccss to the pocket in which the weight which is attached to the window-sash moves. This opening is closed by the cover 13, which cover is made readily removable by raising up the lower sash, and
thus giving access to the pocket without removing any other part of the window-frame.
The dividing-strip G'which separates the two sashes of the window, and the outside strip, H, which holds the lower sash in position, arecut in two at the upper end of the opening which is made through the frame, and the divided lower portions of these strips are fastened to the cover, as shown, so as to be made removable with the cover. These two strips are longer than the cover itself, and extend on down to the bottom of the frame, the dividing-striphaving a groove made in the frame to receive it, while the outer strip, which holds the lower sash in positiomsimply bears against that part of the frame which extends below the opening, made to give access to the weight. The lower end of the cover is cut away at an angle, as shown, so as to catch behind the lower portion of the frame, and thus need no fastening at that end.
Secured to thelower end of the frame, at the top of the opening through it, is the angular plate I, the horizontal part of which serves as a means of attachment to the frame, while the vertical part acts asa stop and support against which the plate on the upper end of the cover rests. Projecting outward from this angular plate is a screw-rod, L, which passes through the recessed portion of the plate N, which is secured to the upper end of the cover. This plate N has a circular recess formed at its up per end, at the point where the bolt passes through it, so as to receive the clamping-nut P, which is passed over the screw-bolt for the purpose of holding the cover securely and yet detachably in position. This recess is sufficiently deep so that neither the nut nor the end of the screw-bolt projects beyond it, and hence neither one of them is in the way of the movement of the window-sash. The two iron plates which are secured to the frame in the upper end of the cover should be placed in such relation to each other and to the moving sash that the sash can neverstrike against either one of them in its movements. In order to remove this cover it is only necessary to remove the nut from the screw-bolt, and then the cover is drawn outward at its upper end, as if the lower end were hinged in position, and after the upper end has been drawn out a short distance the cover can be lifted entirely out. By means of this construction,
. should either one of the weights which are attached to the sashes of the window-frame become fastened in position, or should either one of them become detached from its cord, instead of having to remove a portion of the window-frame, so as to get access to the pocket, it is only necessary to raise the lower sash, and then remove this cover, and the weights can be loosened or reattached to their cords at once.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- I. The combination of the window-frame having an opening through its lower end, so as to give access to the sash-weights, with a removable cover having a plate attached there to, the latter recessed to receive the bolt and nut which look the cover in position, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the window -frame having an opening through its lower end, an angular plate provided with a screw-bolt secured thereto, with a removable cover having a recessed plate secured to one end, and a suitable nut for fasteningthe cover in position, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a window-frame havin g an opening throughits lower end to give access to the sash-weights and a removable cover for the said opening, having parts of the dividing-strip which separates the two sashes and the strip which holds the lower sash in position secured to it, which strips are longer than the cover, so as to project on down to the bottom of the frame, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of July, 1880.
HARRY D. PURSELL.
