Description
1 8- 1943. R. BURDICK 2,325,830
DISPLAY Filed Feb. 17, 1941 2 Sheets-Shet 1 R. BURDICK Aug. 3, 1943.
DISPLAY Filed Feb. 17, 1941 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 M. W 5 mv 5 M R member [0, with the characters i2 applied thereto, is placed upon one face of the wire mesh fabrie l3 in the desired position and-a clip M is disposed over each ear of said member. Complementary clips l9 are preferably positioned against the other or rear surface of the fabric in alinement i with or parallel relationship to the clips [4 and. s then said clips and the background member are" fastened to the-fabric by the rivets 68 which;
extendthrough the openings of the clips, aseis clearly shown in Figures 3 and e. Thus,the background member is firmly secured to the fabric and, sincesaid member is formed of screen mesh fabric having its interstices filled with a suitable material, the member appears to be formeddiwith the screen fabric and gral part thereof.
By utilizing clips or similar appears to be an intemeans for fastening the pre-formed background member to the abric,
said member isheld contiguous thereto an attractive, economical display is provided. Of
course, it is not'es'sential that either or-both of thec'lips l4 and I9 be employed, since 1e rivets l8 alone are sufficient to hold the memberfin place. However, the clips present amplifiedlg'ripping surfaces to the member so as to snugly clamp the same to the fabric, this clamping actionbering most effective when both sets of clips are used which'tendito prevent buckling and warping of said member. It is also pointed out that; if desired,'a pair of background members may besecuredback to back on each side of the fabric with a single set of either front'or rear clips. Obviously, the forward clips are most important -both from a utilitarian and an. ornamentation standpoint.
In some instances,ithas been found desirable to employanelliptical or ovaliframe or 2B in place of the clips M for fastening the background member late the Wire mesh fabric; l3 as shown 'in Figures 5 to 8; The frame'is complementary to the margin'aledge of the background member and is provided withangular ears2l, similar to the clips 14, which conform to the ears of said, member so as to overliethe samewhen in fasteningposition. As shownin Figures 7 and-8, the
frame is cupped o'r'arced incross -section'to pro-' videa substantially semi-circular rim 2.? for en- 2i and the rear frame are curved inwardly in cross-section in thesame manner as thefclips M and i9, while the background member-and said framesare'secured'to the fabricby the rivets 18 'or other fastening means. Manifestly, this 'r'neth- 0d of attaching the ba'ckgroundmember to the fabric materially increaseslthe rigidity of said memberi In Figures 9 t'oll, the backgroundmember has been shown as diamond-shaped "or in the form of apar'allelogram '25 in orderto further illustrate the invention. Obviously, the particular shape of the member is unimportant so long as the same may be attached to the supporting medium or fabric in accordance with the invention, thereby giving the appearance of being an integral part of said medium. In Figure 10, triangular clips which are similar to the clips I4 and 19 have been used to fasten the member 25 to the fabric I3, while said member has been secured to. said fabric by a diamond-shaped frame 21, similar to'the frame 25, in Figure 11. A detailed description of the clips 26 and frame 21 is thought to be unnecessary since the same are ;,substantial lyidentical to the clips of the first .form. l-Iowever, it is noted that the particular s of-the'ear's 2i 'of the frame 29. "A complementary flat rear frame (not shown) ls preferably used rectly on said fabricj that" is, the member merge's alongwith the frame 21-; although the clips' 26 gaging andclamping the member If! to thefabric l3; For engaging the rear surface of the fabric,
outs substituting another fabric. thatthe, use of the clips or fasenersfmake it 1305- sible to attach a; sign o'f a; materials-r fabric which -is different from 'the'material ofwhichthe supforced by saidvclamping means.
shape of the clips varies inaccordance'with .the form or contour of the background member.
Due to the'angularity of the member 25, the ears or-extensions 28 of the frame 21 are disposed within the inner margin thereof instead of projecting outwardly from the same in .the manner or other means Would-be satisfactory.
a simple,'inexpensive meansof displaying character-son an open mesh fabric is provided. Since the display characters are applied 'to 'a back round m'emberof Cel-O-Glass orpther suitable materialwhich is attached to the fabric,-the
same" appear to be formed directlythereon, especially to the casual observer. The improvement hereinbefore set forth obviates the necessity of "removing orreplacingthe fabric in order to apply fthejcharacters thereto and also makes it possible to change said charactersfrom time to time With- It is noted port-is formed, without the sign buckling orbulging. The clips securely fasten the sign atfvarious points and prevent individual stretching or pulling 'of the sign: independently of the support, whereby the sign remains substantially fiat "against the supportthroughoutflits period of at .ta hmen o a po i 1 1 16 ffore'going description of the invention" is explanatory thereof and various changes in the size; sh'apeand materials, as well as in the details of the illustrated 'constructionma'ybe made, within the'scopeof the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of theinvention.
