WINDOW COWL Filed Aug. 29, 1941 fi i g I 1W [Mi/77f 772 Ritchie! July 27, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WINDOW COWL William C. Rife, Toledo, Ohio Application August 29, 1941, Serial No. 408,847
2 Claims.
This invention relates to awning structures.
This invention has utility as an adjustable collapsible ventilation cowl attachable in proximity to the window frame of a building.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front view in set-up position of the awning cowl or hood hereunder;
Fig. 2 is a view of the hood of Fig. 1 from the building or window side thereof, the dotted line showing at the left being of a wing as swingable into collapsed position;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line III-III, Fig. 2, showing the awning with the louvers adjusted to an open position;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line IV-IV, Fig. 1, showing the side assembly with the wing and louver; and
Fig 5 is a view of a hooded slot type of wing in lieu of the wing carrying the transparent portion as in Fig. 3.
Building I may have fixture 2 as a projection or hook of the type adapted to hold a supplemental window structure such as a storm window or screen. In association with such hook 2 there may be eye 3, herein shown as having screws 4 anchoring such eve 3 with top portion 5 of the body of this awning, shown as having outward downwardly tapering upper portion with its inner top portion 6 abutting the building I below the attaching fixtures 2, 3. There is thus about window I clearance 8 for insertion of a storm window or window screen as may be desired. This top portion 5 is shown as having end trims 9, from which extend outwardly and downwardly side rails IU of a more abrupt taper than the downward incline for the top 5.
As facing each other between the right and left hand rails i is angle fitting ll having openings I2 to receive pintles I3 (Fig. 4) in louver strips [4. These pintles 13 have metal trim l thereabout opposing the angle metal ll. At the spaced positions for the respective louvers l4, therails Ill have slots Hi to permit the assembly of the louvers with the rails as a unit, at which position of insertion screws ll may anchor the respective angles H with the side rails l0. Centrally of the respective louvers on the inner side thereof are fixtures l8 having pivotal connection IS with bar 20. Accordingly, as this bar 20 is reciprocated, the louvers shift as a unit. These louvers have major outer face 2| and upward therefrom a minor outer face 22. against which may strike minor lower face 23 of the louver thereabove, so that short lower terminous 24 with the exposed residual portion 22 of such lower louver leaves a V-slot or finish 25 as a weather shed joint for the closed louvers.
The rail 20 may have connection 26 by twisted wire cable 21 to pulley 28, thence by pulley 29 in reach 30 to roller 3| fixed with rod 32 extending through the building structure I to inner control handle of wheel 33.
Between the lower outer portions of the side rails I0 there is skirt decoration 34, with which there is mounted pulley 35. Connection 36 to the lower portion of the rod 20 by wire cable 31 extends about this pulley 35, thence about pulley 38 by slack taking up turn buckle 39 and about pulley 40 with down reach 4| therefrom to pulley 42 fast on the shaft 32 but in a different direction of wrap of the cable reach 30 as to the pulley 3|. Accordingly. there is slack take-up for taut holding of the operating lines to the louvers from the hand wheel 33 so that these pivotally mounted respective louvers l4 may be thrown to weather shed position (Fig. 1), or to a degree of ventilating and light entering adjustment as much as Fig. 3, or variants therefrom In mounting the top portion 5 at the fixtures 2, 3, terminally there are minor drop portions 43, on the inner side of which are located hooks 44 which may engage eyes 45 in the building I adjacent the window frame. The side rails It on the inner portion thereof remote from the louvers may mount hinges 46 for wings 41. These wings 41 may have filler portion 48 as a transparency, say glass. These wings 41 as swung away from the louvers into position under the drop portion 43 may have hooks 49 engage eyes 50 adjacent the frame of the building structure I. There is thus a substantial assembly of this awning structure as a window cowl in position of the desired sash portion of the window for weather shed or light ray shielding or entrance with ventilation as desired. In the event there be purpose for lateral ventilation, there may be in lieu of the transparency 48 hooded slot element 5| (Fig. 5), wherein overhangs 52 may prevent storm entrance, while opening 53 therebelow is ample for ventilation. In the assembly herein, adjacent or upper sash 54 may be in an open position as to the window frame of the building I, and there be available protection against blowing rain or snow, with the desired light or ventilation extent cared for in the adjustment as efiected from within, whether or not there be a screen or storm window in position in addition to the awning holder.
The trim or skirt 34 as the bottom of the region from the louvers may be of decorative attributes and there may be in continuity therefrom trim portion 55 along the lower portions of the wings.-
In this set-up or assembly oi. this awning unit or hood at a window with the eyes I placed on the hooks 2, it is in order first to swing the wings 41 to have dowel 56 enter socket 51 in the building I. Then with the hook ll into the eye 45 and hook 49 into the eye 50, there is rigidity in substantial holding of this hood at the building structure. 4
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A louver device embodying a weather shed body, right and left hand corner members for the body, rockabie slats mounted between the corner members and parallel to the body, wings hinged to the corner members and swingable away from the slats into parallelism with each other, said body and wings being detachably mount-able as a unit on a building.
2. A louver device embodying a body having a weather shed outward overhanging portion, right and left hand comer members for the body, rockable slats mounted between the corner members and parallel to the body, wings hinged to the corner members and swingable away from the slats into parallelism with each other, said body and wings being detachably mountable as a unit on a building, and operable to extend outward from the building adjacent a window, said building adjacent the window lower portion having a way therethrough and slat operating means extending to the overhanging portion and thence through said way, whereby the device slats may be shifted from the interior of the building.
