This inventionrelates to an upholstering construction suitable for upholstered chairs, davenports, and the like.
The provision of suitable spring support means in the seat and back of any upholstery construc tion has long been a problem. Various spring structures have been suggested. The mounting of these structures in the frame of the chair or davenport has also in turn presented its problem. Y
The present invention provides a simple, rugged unit spring construction possessing in and of itself sufiicient support so that the use of the usual burlap or other fabric enclosing means heretofore employed is unnecessary. Further, since the spring construction is a unitary one, its installation is facilitated for it is handled as a unit and not as so many separate parts. The invention is also concerned with-a novel mounting for a unit spring structurewhereby, in a simple, economical and yet very satisfactory way, the unit spring structure can be positioned and supported in a chair or davenport.
The invention includes other objects and features of advantage, some of which, together with the foregoing, will be apparent upon a consideration of the structure disclosed in the drawing accompanying and forming a part'hereor" and incorporated herein to show the present preferred structure of the invention. I
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a View of the bottom of the upholstering construction of the present invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary .view of the bottom shown in the upholstering construction shownin Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section taken along the line of 3-'-3 in Figure 1, while Figured is a fragmentary view of the top of the spring structure employed.
In accordance with the present invention, the unit spring structure is first made up of a plurality of springs suitably joined together. In the drawing, I have shown a plurality of double conical springs H, arranged in a side by side relationship but spaced from one another, the springs being arranged in rows with the axis of any one The bottom of-the springrunit is 'madefup in :a simple manner by crimping over sidewalls ll of vU members I8. A U member is extended along each peripheral edge of the spring unit and along each row of springs intermediate the ends of the spring structure whereby the several rows are joined together on each side thereof. By simply crimping the U member on a segment of each spring, a simple, strong, rugged and reliable fastening is assured.
To support a unit spring structure so provided in a simple manner in the frame of the upholstered piece, I preferably weave a plurality of spring parallel to the axis of another spring. -,To'
secure the springs together as a unit and retain them, a wire frame member I2 is extended about the periphery of the outer springs and is suitably joined to peripheral portions of the springs as by metal clips M. If desired tie springs 16 can be extended between diagonally positioned springs H. to join themtogether and to provide additional resiliency.
strap members 2! and HA across the bottom of each spring unit, each strap member being threaded through the spring structure, over and under the several U membersJ End 22 of each strap member islsecured as. by nails 23 to one side 24 of the frame construction indicated generally at 26, for the upholstered piece. The other end of each strap member is aperturedv as'at 21 to receive a spring 28 which is joined to the opternated that the end coils in each row are fully supported. For example, in Figure l, the two extreme strap members 2! pass under bottom of outermost springs H (at the top of the figure) while the middle strap 2|A is passed under and then over U members [8. Inthis manner'the weaving is alternated to provide full support for the peripheral coils l I at both sidesof the struc-- ture. Inasmuch as the seat and back structures of the davenport and chairs and the like are substantially of the same size, relatively few In I ac-' sizes of unit spring structures suffice. cordance with invention, the unit spring structure can be readily mounted .inthe frame of the upholstered piece and, when so mounted, are
positioned to resist to a very satisfactory extent the wear and tear to which such pieces are ordinarily subjected. i
This application is a continuation in part of my application Serial No. 412,454 filed September 26, 1941.
I claim:
